It's a good thing Dallas is getting its own signature bridge so people can jump off of that instead of the High Five and other highway interchanges.

What you do in public... is in public. Do it on your own land if you want privacy. Tasteless. yes. I would think GGB would be one of the better places to do it since there is much less likely to be collateral damage with no road below.

I'd been posting stories like the following to this thread, but I promised to move them to this thread in the future. Looks like the database ate the posts where we discussed the issue, but here goes.
Inquiry looking at death of woman on freeway
09:57 AM CST on Sunday, November 26, 2006
By JASON TRAHAN / The Dallas Morning News
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcon...h.283f3ece.html

Police are investigating the death of a woman who may have jumped or fallen from the Bush Turnpike and landed on Central Expressway, shutting down southbound traffic for hours Saturday night.

Passing motorists reported seeing the woman's body on the freeway's shoulder about 7 p.m., but officials said it was unclear if anyone saw her jump or fall. Lt. Daniel Robb, a Richardson police spokesman, said a car was parked in the eastbound lanes of the turnpike, above where the woman's body was found.

However, he said investigators had not looked inside the car and had not definitively linked it to the woman, who remained unidentified late Saturday night.

And for reference, the picture of the sign that may need to be posted on the High Five and on the PG(HW)BT over US 75:

Whether or not you think the film is ethical, it just goes to show you the danger of living life without Jesus Christ.

Life is not content until you meet Him.

Man jumps from bridge after accident in Oak Cliff
02:51 PM CST on Thursday, December 28, 2006
By TANYA EISERER / The Dallas Morning News
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcon...t.547ab9a5.html

Demarcus Richmonds died with only his socks on.

Mr. Richmonds, 21, had jumped from a freeway overpass in East Oak Cliff after an accident about 4 a.m. Wednesday. His body wasn’t discovered until the next morning.

Police records say Mr. Richmonds was driving southbound on Interstate 45 near Overton Road when he ran off the road and hit a concrete wall.

“For reasons unknown, he got out of the vehicle and shed all his clothes,” said Sgt. Rick Wilson, a homicide unit supervisor. “When the ambulance got there to treat him, he was running away from them naked.”

Police searched the area and even had a police helicopter looking but officers could not find Mr. Richmonds. A passenger in the car told police that Mr. Richmonds had been doing drugs and drinking alcohol before the accident.

It turns out that Mr. Richmonds had jumped off the 50-foot overpass and had landed in the secluded right of way below. His body was not visible to motorists driving past.

Workers drove up to that spot and found his body Thursday morning.

I love you Incrediculous.

But seriously, I can see why these individuals would want to take their own lives - heck, (and I speak as a man when I say this) I'd rather be born dead considering all the hell in this world.

My two cents.

Woman dies in I-20 overpass jump
01:34 PM CST on Monday, January 22, 2007
By RICHARD ABSHIRE / The Dallas Morning News

An apparent suicide disrupted traffic Monday morning on westbound Interstate 20 at Lawson Road, Mesquite police said.

A 54-year-old woman apparently jumped from the Lawson overpass and was killed despite not being hit by cars on the freeway, said Lt. Bill Artesi, a police spokesman.

The westbound lanes were closed from about 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m., and traffic was rerouted onto the service road during the closure.

Police were withholding the person's name until relatives could be notified.

An earlier headline misstated the victim's gender.

Not exactly a suicide, but...
2 jump off bridge during police chase
05:39 AM CST on Thursday, February 15, 2007
From WFAA-TV Staff Reports
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcon...ase.457445.html

Two men jumped from an overpass during a police chase late Wednesday night and one is not expected to live, Dallas police said. The second man escaped and was being sought by authorities Thursday morning.

Police said they were pursuing three men in an SUV shortly before midnight when they jumped from the vehicle. One was captured immediately. A second suspect jumped from an overpass at Haskell Avenue and Central Expressway. Police said he landed on his head, was critically injured and may not live.

The third suspect, who was wanted for aggravated assault, was not seriously injured in his jump from the overpass. Police said he was picked up by a passing motorist and was being sought.

Police think hotel guest jumped to his death
05:54 AM CDT on Monday, March 26, 2007
By TANYA EISERER / The Dallas Morning News
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcon...ump.a4bb19.html

A Coppell man appears to have jumped Sunday morning from atop the 30-story Renaissance Hotel on the Stemmons Freeway, police said.

Ronald Krivo, 52, died at the scene.

Mr. Krivo had checked into the hotel Sunday morning, police said. He had an airline itinerary for a trip in North Carolina, and he had brought luggage with him, police said.

Mr. Krivo had been on the top floor where there's a pool and workout area, police said. A witness told police that Mr. Krivo had pulled up a chair, climbed on a ledge and then disappeared from view. Mr. Krivo landed in a yard near the west corner of the building.
Maybe he just wanted a better view of West Dallas? People have done stranger things (like getting stuck in a ventilation shaft while robbing a restaurant).

Man killed by DART train
01:22 PM CDT on Thursday, March 29, 2007
From Staff Reports
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcon...n.10b495b6.html

DART police were investigating the death of a Dallas man hit by a train west of White Rock Lake.

A 56-year-old man was laying on the tracks at Fisher Road about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday when he was struck by a southbound train traveling between White Rock Station and Mockingbird Station, DART spokeswoman Claudia Garibay said.

The train operator saw the man but could not stop in time, she said. The man died at the scene.

The Dallas County medical examiner's office identified the man Thursday as James C. Pounds.

Ms. Garibay said the track area had been fenced in to limit public access.

Man threatens to jump from building, snarling city traffic
08:07 AM CDT on Saturday, July 28, 2007
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcon...n1.4244a89.html

Traffic was delayed during rush hour in downtown Dallas as a man threatened to jump from the top of a 14-story building.

Authorities restricted access to the area between Pearl Street, Central Expressway, Harwood Street and San Jacinto Street in the late afternoon while they tried to talk the 40-year-old man down from the top of the building at 720 N. Olive St.

The man was taken into custody Friday evening and was at Parkland Memorial Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation.

Heard a rumor someone was threatening to jump from The Davis Bldg. this morning. Main Street was closed and residents were not allowed to leave through the front of the building. A co-worker of my wife said he heard it on The Ticket. I have yet to find anything on any of the news channels.

Interesting idea -- does the sudden increase in bizarre downtown incidents actually show that Downtown Dallas has reached critical mass? After all, if nobody lived downtown, nobody but a few office workers would have noticed the kid with the emo haircut... the explosions would have been little more than a traffic tie-up... and the warehouse wouldn't have caught fire, because nobody would have been demolishing it for a new upscale development.

FrontBurner: "a kinda morbid discussion". lolol

I love these photos. I can't stop looking at them.

How free and calm she looks, sitting on the ledge. Swinging her feet. Like jumping is no monumental decision, or maybe it never even crossed her mind until the cops showed up. She was just getting a little air, and doing things a little different for a change.

The only thing that could have made it better, is if in one of the windows below, there was a guy drinking coffee, looking down at all the police cars, oblivious to what's going on 15 feet above him.

The article says he jumped of the Southwestern Boulevard overpass, landed on a car, and suffered "injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening". I'd like to hear from the person in the car he landed on!

Not suicidal (though perhaps Darwinistic), but it does involve both a bridge and a jumper.
Bridge jumper's body recovered from Trinity River
11:12 AM CDT on Wednesday, August 8, 2007
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcon...y.138098ca.html

From Staff Reports

The body of a man who jumped off a bridge into the Trinity River was recovered Wednesday morning.

Search crews responded to reports Tuesday that a man seeking to beat the heat had jumped from the bridge near Henderson Street and White Settlement Road.

The man and a friend were taking turns jumping into the river about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when the man did not resurface, said Lt. Kent Worley of the Fort Worth Fire Department.

Lt. Worley said he did not have the man’s name but that the man and his friend were homeless.

OK, people, if you're going to commit suicide on a TxDOT Bridge, pick one of the great big up and over interchange bridges. Try not to drink ahead of time because you might mistake a regular overpass for the right tool for the job. 16'3" is not necessarily going to do the job unless you time it for the Peterbilt coming down the road.

Man jumps off bridge onto highway

FORT WORTH -- A man jumped off the Riverside Drive bridge onto U.S. 287 this morning.

Lt. Dean Sullivan, police spokesman, said several witnesses, including motorists traveling on the highway, called 911 after observing the man jump from the bridge onto the northbound traffic lanes of the highway shortly after 10 a.m.

"It appears he may have been attempting to commit suicide," Sullivan said.

Interesting imprompty study in traffic dynamics this morning. LBJ was closed at Bruton Rd, so traffic that normally moves at 15-30mph from I-30 to Central Expressway was zipping along at 65+.

Which caused two wrecks, one of which shut down LBJ at Greenville. I got on at I-30, went 65 for a few miles, and then spent the rest of the hour getting around the backup.

Though it must be said, I don't think the need for a traffic study experiment figured in this person's decision to take the express elevator marked "down".
Um... insert story here? I can't find the story about the jumper at Bruton Rd over I-635 -- maybe it'll show up later. All that's available now is from traffic.com:
"Miscellaneous
At Bruton Rd (#3) - suicide - jumper from the bridge blocking 2 right lanes - (Mesquite)"

Escaped prisoner threatens to jump off I-30 bridge over Trinity
02:03 PM CST on Friday, January 25, 2008
From Staff Reports
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcon...p.5963fc63.html

An inmate believed to have escaped the custody of Dallas County Sheriff’s deputies is threatening to jump off the Interstate 30 bridge over the Trinity River near downtown. Traffic is being diverted from the area.

According to police radio traffic, the escape occurred shortly before 1 p.m. Officers reportedly chased the inmate on foot through freeway traffic before stopping on the bridge.

Dallas Morning News reporter Kimberly Durnan says the man is standing on a railing on the south side of the bridge. She says the man is teetering on part of the bridge that is at least three stories high. Several officers are standing nearby trying to talk him down.

Another almost: Man accused of killing ex-wife threatens to jump off overpass. Again the George Bush Turnpike, but this time at I-35E, where there are also some pretty tall bridges. Apparently, he waited for his ex to come to work early at Hillcrest & I-635, beat her to death, and then headed for... Oklahoma?... before deciding to end his journey altogether.

But they talked him out of it. How, I can't imagine... "Hey, you beat your wife to a pulp, but don't jump because... um... [whispering into radio] Hey chief, a little help? I'm coming up empty here!"

Anyone remember when a mother threw her 2 children off the Jim Miller Rd overpass over I30 (RLThornton) a couple months back? That stuck with me for a few weeks thereafter. Link to story

Yeah, that one was close to my neighborhood. As hard as I've had to fight for my own kids, that one was just unimaginable.

Meanwhile, it now appears that frontage roads aren't even safe any more. They say he wasn't pushed and didn't jump, so I guess the only conclusion is that the frontage road just picked him up and threw him off the side. Article: Man dies after 50-foot fall off Central Expressway service road - "A U.S. postal worker called police shortly before 4:15 a.m. to report that he saw a man lying on a median near Lemmon Avenue."

Edit: they said second person! Dam why are so many people jumping out of highway overpasses and service roads!!?? :huhcld:
