St Patrick's Day Parade - Greenville Ave.

Got a few shots at the St. Patty’s Day parade this morning. It would take a thousand pictures to capture all the madness going on during this thing, but here are a few I came away with. Pardon the lack of sharpness and pixelation, I’m apparently still learning how to shoot with a zoom lens and maintain quality when editing for web…

Anticipating the parade…

Their mothers would be proud…

Grand Marshall Kinky Friedman

And his supporters, out in full force…

:eek3:

St. Pats Day, Mardi Gras, it’s all the same…

Looking towards future events, I'd like to know if the City has any special promotions program to encourage locals in the Metro out to the parade on Lower Greenville, or is the annual event just considered common knowledge? I'm sure that Barking Dog Adleman wouldn't like more people down there anyway, though.

btw: Has anyone ever thought of entering DFWUF float in the parade?

Yes, but, this year since St Patty's Day falls on a Saturday it's going to be the same day.

Irish or not, Greenville bash is where it's at
Cancellation of downtown St. Patrick's parade may aid turnout

07:44 AM CDT on Saturday, March 17, 2007
By JENNI BEAUCHAMP / The Dallas Morning News
jbeauchamp@dallasnews.com
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcon...ys.4522d31.html

Greenville Avenue will live up to its name this weekend for its annual St. Patrick's Day celebration. But the luck of the Irish has failed the downtown Dallas parade, which has been dropped because of a lack of funding.

The downtown parade, a St. Patrick's Day staple for more than 25 years, traditionally follows the Greenville parade, which was started by local merchants in 1979. Now the Greenville event, sponsored by the Greenville Avenue Area Business Association, attracts thousands of spectators and participants each year.

The crowd at Saturday's event, which will feature more than 100 floats and former Dallas Cowboy Billy Joe Dupree as grand marshal, could be even larger with the cancellation of the other parade.

Organizers for the downtown event cited several reasons for calling it off this year: Corporate sponsorships are hard to come by, city funding has dried up while expenses rise and volunteers have been hard to find.

But organizers are holding out hope that the event will return in 2008 and urged supporters to e-mail president@irishparade.com.

In the meantime, they're throwing their support behind the Greenville event.

"While we realize that it has not had the same focus and culture for which the Downtown Parade is known, if we can pull together our supporters we could eventually have a parade on par with Chicago and New York," organizers said on the downtown parade's Web site.

On Greenville, partygoers make it a daylong event, said Tommy Donahue, a board member for the Greenville business association who has worked at Milo Butterfinger's bar for 20 years.

"People come at 7 a.m. and stay till they can't stand up," he said.

And partygoers are unhappy if they miss it.

"In 1988, we didn't have a parade because a city councilman at the time wouldn't give us a permit," Mr. Donahue said. "People rebelled that year so much that it exploded after that.

"They realized that they created a monster because they didn't give us a permit and that they might as well work with us."

THE ST. PATRICK'S DAY PARADE: IF YOU GO

What: Greenville Avenue St. Patrick's Day Parade

When: Starts at 11 a.m. today

Where: The parade begins on Greenville at Blackwell Street and ends at Yale Boulevard.

This year was much larger than last year. Maybe 2x the crowd size south of Mockingbird compared to last year.

St. Pat's parade has split personality
Families enjoy calmer scene at north end of route

02:09 AM CDT on Sunday, March 18, 2007
By JEFF MOSIER / The Dallas Morning News
jmosier@dallasnews.com

The floats were the same at both ends of Greenville Avenue, but revelers Saturday enjoyed two distinct St. Patrick's Day parades.

Near the parade's start just south of Park Lane, the route was lined with strollers, little red wagons and toddlers weighed down with beads thrown from floats. Closer to the finish at Yale Avenue, the beer and alcohol fumes hung thick in the air as the area took on a college party vibe.

Mandy McDaniel, 25, stayed at the northern end of the route with her 3-year-old daughter to avoid the serious partying. Ms. McDaniel, a Denton resident, said she's been coming to the parade for years, but this is the first time she brought Kyrstin.

"I wouldn't go past Lovers Lane with a child," she said.

But the more kid-friendly end of the parade wasn't turning out so well for Kyrstin. She hated the blasts from the fire truck sirens and the blaring music from the floats.

But the site of a green dog trotting along the route made her giggle as she held tight to her mother.

The dog, Willie, was accompanying David Kukowski and his "Tie One on Society" float – a gathering of friends who didn't want to stand on the sidelines.

"Willie is a West Highland white – uh green – terrier," said Mr. Kukowski, a Plano resident wearing an oversized tie. "He's a trooper, but he doesn't like to get bathed after this is over."

Organizers expected more than 100 floats Saturday, an increase over last year. The cancellation of a planned downtown parade was also expected to flood the area with an even bigger crowd than previously anticipated.

The floats – which started rolling at 11 a.m. – were a dizzying mish-mash of themes. There were political parties and candidates and dog rescue groups, sports teams and a pirate ship, a strip club and a birthday float for a 9-year-old.

This is the second year, Erin Renfro, who turned 9 on Thursday, has celebrated her birthday with a small float in the parade. Erin, swathed in a green feather boa, and her friends walked the route flinging candy to children and adults in the crowd.

"It's really cool," she said shyly.

Farther south, the party started long before lunch.

Corey, a 27-year-old who didn't want to give his last name, had secured a prime spot in a parking lot through connections. He and his friends were grilling food and had a set up their own tailgate party.

"We're here before noon. We have Budweiser and burgers," he said. "What more can you ask for."

Corey also bragged about taking a Jell-O shot as Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez passed by in the bed of pickup truck.

Chris Pope, 25, admitted that he saw none of the parade. He and his friends stake out a different parking lot along Greenville to drink and hang out.

"I honestly don't know what's happening," he said. "I'm just here with my friends."

CVS(Lovers/Greenville) got wrecked. Bad. Even sunday afternoon it was still trashed. There were some guys in suits with a camera on a tripod taking pictures late Sunday.

DART should have put some of their Transient Five-O out in front of the CVS because the buses could not get through. One bus ran over a cooler full of beer. Smashed it. Good times.

People corral

Reminder: Dallas could hold big parties like this all the time if the city government would stay the hell out of it. It has taken the city many years to learn that they should just go with the flow at these events and let the crowd police itself. The St. Patricks Day After Party finally has enough momentum that it will become an institution if the city butts out.

Wow. What a turnout. I have never seen a crowd this large. There were cars parked all up and down the residential streets east of Lower Greenville almost to Abrams! I wish I had been in that B-25 flying over.

We went to a party a couple of blocks away after the parade and never made it to Lower Greenville. When we were leaving to go to dinner, we saw tow truck after tow truck taking the DUI cars down Munger.

Everything was so crowded for miles around we just decided to go over to Al Biernat's on Oak Lawn.

The next morning we saw a few stragglers in the neighborhood wearing green. One was still wearing a feather boa. Later we saw two guys on Henderson who could barely walk and were holding each other up...

I enjoyed the festivities Saturday, and have the sunburn to prove it. This was my first year to make it out, and DART made the whole thing incredibly easy. We rode up to Lovers Lane station then found a spot to watch the parade near Energy Square, so we would be close to the concert after the parade.

After the concert, we just walked back to the station, waited about 5 minutes for a train, hopped on and rode home. I saw lots of people riding DART to and from the festivities, but I'm sure there could've been more who would've been wise to do the same.

Overall, the parade was fun. The concert - well, I wish they'd said somewhere that once you got in, you couldn't leave and come back, and that the main event (the Toadies) wouldn't be taking the stage until after 4. We were basically trapped for 3 hours listening to bands we'd never heard of and didn't care for, until the Toadies finally came on and played for about an hour. Worth it, but would've enjoyed it more without the loooong wait.

I must respond and say that the festivities were crazy. People were everywhere and many of them really drunk. There were two main problems other than being trapped to see the Toadies. (Which wasn't that bad b/c the Toadies were worth the wait. They were amazing! Please make a comeback.) Ok. First they were charging people to walk down the street in lower Greenville. Worse than that it was one in one out. What the crap. Don't give me firecode. Its a street. They don't catch on fire. If anyone knows the reason for this then please tell, b/c many people turned away when they saw the line. Myself included. The second problem is trash. Not that it was there, that was the reaction. The action was that the city is dumb and didn't have trashcans everwhere. I saw very very few. Other events in cities of similar magnitude I've been to have been much cleaner b/c of trashcans everywhere. It's very simple. Most people will throw trash in a can if its there. If its not, people don't carry it with them everywhere till they find one. Lubbock does a better job on its Forth of July street fair with trash than this. Anyways, all in all a great day! Go Toadies!

I caught the #1 Via Matilda bus from Mockingbird Station at around 5-6pm on Saturday. I didn't go to the parade -- me and my son were just spending a day riding the buses and trains. There were still people wandering around in various shades of green and intoxication. A couple of guys, totally wasted, got on the bus, paid their $2.50 each for a day pass, rode a couple of blocks, and got off. Guess they really didn't want to walk. Hopefully, they were nowhere near their vehicles.

Also, was it just me, or did a lot of the ladies look like they had recently done something embarassing? :eek3:

You haven't seen trash on the street until you go to Mardi Gras. That's why you never wear good shoes or nice pants!

Perhaps they should have another closed street party down around the former Arcadia area to accommodate all the extra revelers..
