(MOVED) Waco -- Dallas' former sister city
In the early 1940's Dallas and Waco were sister cities. Both had roughly the same population. We all know who won the battle. Here are some photos of the casualties.

Casual dining -- the "li lounge" is just big enough for a pool table.

Dr. Pepper Museum
Dr. Pepper was invented in Waco. Because its owner's were smart, they moved to Dallas as quick as they could. Here is a photo of the Dr. Pepper Museum and origianal bottling plant.

Waco suspension bridge
In the 1800's Waco had legal prostitution. This bridge is where the hookers would stand as men on the boats picked out their ladies for the night. Regretably, the brothel was torn down to make way for the Waco Convention Center.

I do realize the pictures are a bit random, but it is strange to think that Waco was once equal in size and stature to Dallas.
Dallas and Waco fought over a rail line in the 1940's. Dallas won. Then Waco faced the deadliest tornado in Texas history in the 1950's. Most of the infrastructure was gone and the town leaders actually DISCOURAGED businesses to move to Waco. Well, their discouragement worked and most of the businesses moved up to Dallas. Somehow I don't think those companies will move back. If Waco had gotten that rail line, and Dallas suffered the tornado this state would be a very different place. |

An Omnious Warning...
My parents live north of waco and I also went to MCC there as well and I have to agree, Waco could've been a major metropolitan force in texas. But, you can trace the problems with this city further back than the rail fight of the 1940's and the tornado of the 50's. Since Baylor was incorporated here in waco, its had a heavy hand in local politics. Its one of the BIG reasons this city has become the trailer trash dump that we all know today. Unlike UT,that was willing to change their views due to the times, Baylor has stuck to the mark that the year is still 1890 and the townies are still the uneducated and brutish lot they were when they moved into town over 100 years ago,and the city hasnt seemed to want to shake that notion either.

Waco
Agreed. Baylor is also at fault for the current recession, global warming and the rise of the Adolf Hitler.
Do you really believe Waco is a selling point to get students to come to Baylor? The sad state of Waco hurts Baylor. This is evidenced by the fact that in 1950 the university bought land in Dallas and was going to move. Waco built streets and Waco Hall to induce the college to stay. Waco does have potential. However, Baylor does not want it that way. |
