Large tower proposal in The Colony

Does anyone know what the original desings were for this building?

2000-MGF Tower over 100 stories 1657-ft. was part of a mixed-use project at The Colony suburb north of Dallas, the tower was to be the world's tallest. The Colony city council refused zoning for this tower, while the F. A. A. office in Fort Worth never came to a conclusion on approving the height. The developer may sell part of the land but is still planning a much smaller commercial project called Global Centre, at State Hwy. 121 and Plano Parkway.

How tacky would that have looked out in the middle of nowhere?

From what I understand the problem the city had was the developer had no plans, visual aids, etc. to show their proposed development. The city like many others have a hard time changing zoning, laws, zoning, etc. on very subjective material. So unfortunently I don't believe there is any information on that. This is the same company that took their "act" from city to city in the use and other countries to see who would bite.

Probably as tacky as these: the Emirates Office Tower in Dubai and the Kingdom Centre in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Both appear to be examples of a really, really big building in a completely inappropriate location. The Dubai tower looks to be closest to the The Colony "project" (as if it were ever a real possibility) -- it looks to have been built in a distant suburb of an urban area. The Riyadh behemoth, on the other hand, looks like what you'd get if you built a skycraper in the middle of Santa Fe.

The Emirates Office Tower and the surrounding buildings in Sheikh Zayed is much like the "Platinum Corridor.." Just with less stuff around it.

Look at how much everything just drops off:

Maharishi had several borderline bizarre mega-towers planned across the globe that never came close to fruition. The info used to be referenced here on the site - but, I deleted the old site. We'll put it back up in the near future.

There was no specific "design" for the building at the time, and the concept plan presented was extremely vague... a few simple colors with a big square box representing one, multiple use structure. An entertaining City Council meeting in an old Food Lion - to say the least. Lots of major players arguing for or against (and sometimes both).

I am not too familiar with latter platting or concept plans. However, it appears the primary goal of asking for a significantly more dense zoning on their property in The Colony was to drive up the value of their land in time for TXDOT's acquisition of a strip of land for the expansion of SH 121?

I remember hearing about the Food Lion episodes. What a joke it all seemed to be.

I can only imagine some people had gotten wind of the designs they were peddling in India and Brazil at the very time this proposal came out...

An example of the India proposal is below, and it's Brazilian counterpart was to look nearly identical. The other image is a generic line to show height scale vs. other tall buildings (from the news during that timeframe.)

Does anyone else see a slight problem with the hot-air balloons in the picture? I didn't think hot-air ballooning and tall buildings worked well together.

Not to mention the fact that the building depicted looks like a huge wart on the landscape.

Wink

I think the hot-air balloon proved to be metaphorical.

Not here, not anywhere. I'm not sure why they keep pushing the concept, it's probably just an attention-getting scheme. They've proposed this in many places upon aqcuisition of property. Always seemed kind of scam-like to me.

Yep, at the corner of 71st & Peoria, if I recall correctly. Oral Roberts originally wanted it to be gold-plated to match the "decor" (shudder) of the rest of his university, but fortunately, God intervened with a message from the sky. Or to be more technical: aircraft landing in nearby Jenks would have been blinded, so the FAA said no.

I lived in the Tulsa area through high school. We always heard that Oral told the architects to design a truly Godly college campus. Unfortunatly, the lead architect was hard of hearing, and thought Oral said "truly Gaudy". Of course, once the first gold-encrusted building goes up, it's hard to turn back.

(By the way, only one of the above anecdotes is a joke, in case you were confused...)

Yeah, ya' gotta love how the food lion out here in The Colon(y) is a converted food lion. This city is so ass backwards it's not even funny. Although, I am very glad that they quashed that building before it got started. Thanks for all the responses!

RobertB, i like how when you're down around the 21st and 31st st. bridges you can gauge the scale of the town by having ORU out there... and of course the Tulsa Mountains on the right.

don, that's a pretty good tale right there. i hadn't heard that.. did they save enough money to justify it not cleaning up too well? -- or maybe the question is how much money you'd have to save, to compensate for the void of civic pride?
