Texas High School Stadium Mega thread *update*
Here are some of the best in high school football venues in Texas. Many complete with state of the art communications and PA systems for announcers, radio/tv broadcasts, coaches and miced(miked) refs, video replay boards and marquees, luxury amenities in the press boxes, monitors in the concession areas, Astroturf 12 or one of the infill type turfs for multi-use(well known as money saver since the 60s in Texas high school football), flourescent goal posts, and adjancent indoor practice areas with state of the art weight and training facilities. Feel free to show some of the best in your area, or critique Texas for being so far behind/ahead/or on par with everyone else.
Why did I post this on other boards? Because high school football transcends the gridiron in the state of Texas. It's part of our culture like it or not, and the "places of worship reflect that" I will continue to add pics as I travel to games and stadiums this season. I know many hate football, and hate that it gets so much money and attention. So feel free to debate that if you like. But enjoy the pics, and realize venues like these and the sheer numbers of them are unique to Texas. Last edited by rantanamo : 06-19-2005 at 04:33 AM. |

Frisco's stadium looks like it will be pretty nice. I like the entrance canopies (tents), and that it is sunken and easily expandable, sort of like Tech's. I can think of one glaring omission: San Angelo Stadium. It is a bit old-school, but interesting. The field is sunken and the stands are built up on mounds of earth excavated from the field area.

Kimbrough Stadium in Murphy. Plano ISD's newest. According to PBK Architects, the whopping $19 million($18,785,325 to be exact) is the real price tag.

Hanby Stadium - Mesquite (Perhaps the greatest renovation in the history of mankind.....jk. But pretty darn incredible from wooden rainbow to perhaps the most modern and technological facility in the state)

very nice. man, so many impressive stadiums in texas. I really like UNT's stadium. It's a huge bowl carved into a massive hill.
I used to go to Standridge Stadium all the time for so many different reasons cuz i used to go to Creekview. Its really high and tall when u stand up to it. u have a nice distant view of downtown dallas when ur up there. thanx for the tour.

These stadiums are all amazing, and I am sure that the communities must be proud of what they have. It is incredible to think about the amount of resources that went into developing each of these. The stadiums do provide a kind of "center" for each of the communities that they serve, but imagine what could have been developed if even some of those resources could have instead been used for true "community centers" that serve the larger community year round...

Always a debate, that I even used to hear at UT. But that can be said for anything. Plus many of these places pay for themselves through ad, concession, season gate, and playoff rental and gates in something like 3-5 years. I've read articles on Hanby and Waco ISD. I believe Waco ISD stadium was making more of an economic impact than Floyd Casey stadium because of it's location and ability to host multiple events per weekend, and I believe Hanby made almost $1 million last year without even being well-known as being a nice venue. The boom I think is a result of a combination of things. A.) Increasing number of schools per district. When we think of these stadiums we can't forget JV, Freshman, and Junior High games. B.) Booming school populations and number of schools Statewide. This means that the UIL has to constantly add playoff teams and games to stay proportional to the population. We'll probably see 4 teams vs the current 3 per district soon. C.) Playoff popularity(arguably the most popular sport in Texas) D.) What I call the 'small style' architectural revolution. Just look at the shopping centers, grocery stores, schools and many smaller offices and industrial park. No, they aren't masterpieces, but I like them. Very nice compared to the bland stuff from decades past. These stadiums reflect this era of not just being plain jane. I guess you can take that as a pride or ego factor, which goes without saying just as any high-rise would.
Oh yeah, and I failed to mention Texas Stadium and the Astrodome beginning to fail as venues. I know for a fact that last year many school districts simply would not pay the fee to play at Texas Stadium or the Astrodome, so they began looking for other venues. Texas Stadium used to host a ton of games. I'm talking 2 Thursday night, 2 Friday (or 4 on Thanksgiving weekend) and 4 or 5 on Saturday. The nicer smaller venues can absorb these games for much smaller fees, more close convenience, and a better view of the game. Plus a filled stadium of 15-20,000 can rock during a playoff game. I remember passing that stadium all the time on the way to Austin. Always wanted to stop and check it out from closer. BTW, who started the tradition of two-toned pants? Very unique uniforms.
