New Flag For Dallas

I have been thinking that Dallas should redo its flag. The current one is too busy and boring.

Granted, some say its "only a flag". But flags are symbols, and people can rally around them. In what can be at times a divisive city, it would be great to have something that is civic in nature that we can rally behind rather than just the Cowboys (Don't get me wrong, I like God's Team too.)

Dallas' most notable symbol is the Peagsus. Perhaps we should have a flag that has the Peagsus.

Yeah, a flag won't fill in pot-holes or take care of the vacancy rate in DTD, but a flag can make people feel proud of their city, and once they feel that, maybe more people in Dallas will care about the other things going on in their city.

I still think there should also be a Metropolitan Flag as well. (Like Hampton Roads.)

Interesting idea on the muni flag. Maybe we should run some visuals (of peoples ideas) up in here and move this thread to the 'ideas' forum.

I think that is a great idea. Dallas needs a flag that is simple, urban and symbolizes Dallas.

I love the flag of Fort Worth. I think Dallas needs a flag that people will see and go, "That's definitely Dallas. That's a cool flag". I wish I was a artist, because I would definitely work on that.

Right now, If I someone raise the Dallas flag, I would say, "what's that?". But I'll see what I can do with CAD or Illustrator.

Let's pick one that doesn't give me flashbacks of NAM. I never could understand why we chose the NVA flag to represent our great city.

Our Flag:

The USS Dallas was the first United States Man-o-War to wage war on the enemy in Iraq. They delivered Navy SEALs via a piggy backed mini-sub to attack the oil facilities off the coast of Iraq. Along with the United States flag, the City of Dallas flag flew over those oil facilities to represent the USS Dallas. According to what I have heard, it's the first United States city flag used in such a fashion. I believe the NYC flag was used in Afghanistan flown on vehicles, flagpoles and such but never carried into direct enemy action like the City of Dallas flag.

Since you guys want to change the flag and put My Little Ponies on it, rainbows and dollar signs I wonder what a terrorist would think about that.

Who cares what they think about it?

I thought the flag was white with the big "D" on it. When did it get changed? Or was it always the red and blue one?

It has been as far as I remember, the red and blue flag. The big "D" that has the leaf in the middle, I believe that is the city logo.

At first, I thought this was a continuation of this topic, from 2004 (started by CTroyMathis):

Design a flag for Metropolitan DFW

Here are a couple of variations on the Metroplex Flag I came up with:

This one is a bit busier, but had good symbolism:

And some important points that I cribbed from elsewhere:

http://www.nava.org/Publications/GFBF/gfbf-1.htm
THE 5 BASIC PRINCIPLES OF FLAG DESIGN
1. Keep It Simple
The flag should be so simple that a child can draw it from memory

2. Use Meaningful Symbolism
The flag's images, colors, or patterns should relate to what it symbolizes

3. Use 2-3 Basic Colors
Limit the number of colors on the flag to three, which contrast well and come from the standard color set

4. No Lettering or Seals
Never use writing of any kind or an organization's seal

5. Be Distinctive or Be Related
Avoid duplicating other flags, but use similarities to show connections

Principles Violation

The current flag of Dallas is in clear violation of principles 1 and 4.

Dallas Flag...

I believe it would be easier to change the Dallas Flag first, before designing a DFW flag. To change the Dallas Flag, one would have to approach Dallas City Council. That would be easier than getting all city governments in DFW to approve a Metropolitan flag. All though perhaps approaching the North Texas Council of Governments would be the best place to start talking about a Metropolitan flag.

That doesn't say Dallas. That says knock-off.

The flag should be like a team logo.

I think that we should incorporate the Art Deco Style of Fair Park into the flag. Using this pegasus perhaps?

The My Little Pony flag flies at Exxon-Mobil's HQ.

Copyrighted and Trademarked.

Hippies see that and think of a sWaStIkA and B00sh and evil Texans.

2-3 years ago some hippies burned some of the Magnolia My Little Pony Flags at the Exxon-Mobil shareholders meeting in the parking lot. How very Che of them.

My Little Pony

I think we should have the Pegasus on the flag (perhaps it should be the only symbol on the Dallas Flag). Although we may have to make some modifications as to not infringe on any trademarks. But I am sure if the City of Dallas worked with ExxonMobil legal issues can be avoided.

Dallas had the Adopt-a-Pegasus program not to long ago, and Dallas' Landmark building, the Magnolia, if I am not mistaken, used to serve as a beacon for people traveling at night by plane.

Hippies should know better. Dallas is not a "hippie" city. Not that I am discouraging them from living here, after all they do spend money. But they just need to know that Dallas is not Austin, and they should not make Dallas into Austin.

This is exactly what I have always thought would be the perfect flag for Dallas. The red pegasus maybe a big white D on a blue field or Dallas written in white script below the red pegasus on a blue field. Iconic, unique, Dallas.

That would probably come out on top, but do note that it violates *every one* of the "five basic principles of flag design" mentioned earlier...

Hippies are just bogeymen used to scare small (minded) Republican children.

I like the Pegasus flying through the D idea.

So you basically want a revised version of the Denver Broncos old Logo.

Using the same logo you used, with a white background and no lettering I think would be perfect.
