Just take a short drive down Live Oak or Gaston. I would guess that there are hundreds of apartments in the $500.00 range. Most are probably less than 5-10 mins from downtown.

I agree with UrbanBiker - why in the world would we purposefully make a building right smack dab in the middle of town that we're trying to revitalize a tenement? That makes absolutely no sense.

I know the building is sitting there rotting, but the business went under due to mismanagement; and since that happened, the far east owners have wanted a ridiculous amount of money for it.

Regardless of its current state, it is one of the most historically- and architecturally- significant buildings we've got - and I think most of us think it could be great again.

You will never see this view again. I took this from this Main Street parking garage which is now demolished.

U know, i have read the threads, maybe us new guys missed it, there is allot of information to read threw and process and most of it is rumors or speculations. And i have made the mistake. I made that mistake in the Trinity River Project where i had thought someone said something about a sound barrier wall, but that was not the case...i also had no idea what Vote (yes or no) would keep the road there, but i believe that has been fixed. What im getting to is that some of us are new. And some of u guys have been here since 2003 if not earlier then that. When you read threw these threads, that is allot of information to process, and its not like we read every single posting.
I dont mean to jump on you man, but you seem to jump on newbies allot. Maybe you hate hearing the same thing be asked over and over, I get that. It sucks when every week someone asks a question that was answered a few weeks back, but jumping down there throat for asking a question is no way to do things.
So man, just please take it easy, because its easier to say "hey man, ya, they said that The Grand hotel was going to be (insert answer) and in fact that article is in post #(insert post number). It is a much more positive answer then (i hate it when people do not read the thread before they post"

    Thank you :2peace:

I even said please. Would it help if I add a dancing banana? :bhat:

But since we are on it, you are doing the same thing that a banned member just a week before you did, right down to the misspellings. In fact, that person was the only one I have "jumped on" but I did that in a PM, leading me to believe you are version number two of the banned poster.

Hint, if you have a question, read first. It may be a lot, but it isn't anyone's job to do that for you. The info is usually there, and many of us prefer to keep the thread on topic with the latest news and discussion.

    Hey Dallas Fan,

If you ever have any questions about a specific subject- just PM any member on the board. I'm sure most members on here wouldn't mind taking a minute to answer a question or two... But yes, a developer is going to open this back up as a hotel...

I really don't see the exterior, except for maybe the base of the building, being altered very much (which is a very good thing).

It needs an exterior restoration. An exterior update depending on your definition would loose the buildings historical elegance and any possibility use of historic qualifying funds. A good cleaning and maybe some replacement parts and it will look excellent with some new lighting designed just for this building along with the new park.

Be helpful or don't respond. You replied quite curtly to him, just a handful of posts up on this page. No one's going to get offended that you don't respond to their post, because even if you don't someone else will. Spread the peace and love, eh?

I think now, and have always thought that the "Statler Hilton" was one of the classiest and most substantial "moderns" in the neighborhood.

Update? Well, I doubt anything but a fleabag would open without a little nip and tuck here and there. Adjustments will certainly be neccesary. But I hope we're not starting again about how tacky the 50's and 60's exteriors are/were, and that we should try to "improve" them with some kind of faux future or past facade. The era of those buildings was a decadent (in it's own right) and powerful time in Dallas history. Even if we can't quite grasp it now, our descendants might appreciate it if we'd stop rewriting Dallas' history. For example, I personally hate the "aqua building" a few blocks away, but I respect what it's BEEN more than I hate what it IS.

Msutton - I agree, the response was unnecessarily rude. If you don't like someone's question, ignore it. I have to practice this every day at work. Let's not scare off new folks - they are an important component of this forum.

I am with JT Restore it. You know it's ok not to tear every prepare 1960's building in this city.
personally I think Dallas is one city that lately has been tearing down alot of really old buildings.
part if it history is being lost, but on another note I think on the bright side it is going to help the city really grow. I am never really advocate tearing down old building especially if they were built in the 1940, 30 and 20's. I think developer should explore their options on the building first before tearing it down.
I was sad to see the 1900 block of main to go, but the new park will really brighten things up.
also It pretty moved the homeless people that were congregating in that area.
It is hard for me to see the old Building go but I realize they can't always be saved, that were the camera comes in.

So I was going to Midtown NYC for alittle business next week and I am staying in the Doubletree Metropolitan Hotel. The first thing I thought of when I saw the picture was "Dallas Grand Hotel!" From what I understand this is supposed to be a pretty swanky hotel. This goes to show how unique a hotel from this era can be especially in DT Dallas which sometimes is nothing but a glass canyon...

So what is happening with this fabulous place... yes I know the plans but did it transfer ownership and if it did does anyone know why nothing is happening. Hopefully this is not a lending crisis victim.

    ^welcome arch-image

I was beginning to worry about this one (again)...

It's reasonable to believe a contract to purchase the building hinged on the likelihood of the Main Street Garden across the street, but with that park taking two more years to be ready, I thought, well I was just beginnging to wonder.

Isn't this the deal Kaaydah Schatten was doing with Ross Perot Jr.? She's the woman who did the park across the street. She arranges financing for deals. Think she proposed making the Hotel an Indian Casino a while back.

I wonder if the Dallas Grand will become a Dallas Intercontinental Hotel. The only reason I am suggesting this because the InterContinental Hotels Group is already making a large investment in Dallas. They own many brands we all know including Holiday Inn and recent addition to downtown The Hotel Indigo at the corner of Harwood and Main St and a view of the coming park. They also run the Crowne Plaza brand that the former Hampton Inn now labeled West End Hotel will become when renovations are completed. The brand that they have left and seems to make some level of sense to me is their InterContinental Hotel & Resorts. They are scattered throughout the globe and US. They already have one in Houston and they do have one in Addison but are they intrigued by the Dallas Grand and its location. I have no other information to prove otherwise so I am just making a wild guess to pass the time.

    Sculpture

Anyone by chance have any idea what happened to the sculpture that was originally in the second floor garden and was the theme for the original logo?

    Kaaydah Schatten Grand Hotel

[QUOTE=FoUTASportscaster]Last word I had was that this building would be under enovation in January.[/QUOTEtl
I ran into Kaaydah Schatten today and she said she is the new owner of the Grand Hotel. She will make an announcement next week. It sounded like student housing - i'm not sure. I'm not holding my breath. She's a receptionist at Stewart Title Company. She claims to have the resources, but she filed bankruptcy a year ago. But, anything is possible. Who knows?
