According to Scott Griggs on the Dallas Morning News City Hall blog the staff didn't even have information prepared regarding the unsafe nature of mixing of pedestrians, bikes, and once and awhile maintenance vehicles. The council members asked about how many vehicles would use this road and they balked on that too. Definitely sounds like some serious politics here.

DMN also had today that asst city mgr just mentioned while on tour that TXDOT wants to park some Horseshoe supplies nearby for 4 years, running those monster trucks back and forth 24/7. It has some long term benefits in that it provides a good path to the Trail, after the work is done.

See even that sounds more reasonable than how they presented the situation in the meeting with the committee.

Robert Wilonsky at the DMN has a great story on why the levee trails and connector will never be built:

    http://cityhallblog.dallasnews.com/2...ty-river.html/

That really chaps my hide. They should just quit the whole Trinity Strand Trail with this new information. Just throw in the towel and give up. Today, with this new information, the whole idea of a "Central Park" in the riverbottom between the levee died. Sort of hurts a little, kind of like the news release when they were going to privatize a large section of the Great Trinity Forest for a Golf Course that will never be open to the public.

I wonder when we as citizens will get pissed off enough to take our city back from the assholes at city hall. I have learned so much this year about how vicious the city really is behind the scenes. It's all about money and kickbacks. So many of them just do the very worst things under the table it would make you sick if you knew about it.

Maybe I'm missing something here - where's the need for a single square foot of concrete on the levee tops, the up and overs, or in the floodway?

I was riding those on a bike then a scooter fifty years ago from Forest Ave to Singleton and up the Elm Fork to Frazier Dam.

Never had a problem. On the rare occasions when there were work vehicles I avoided them just like I did the motorcycle gangs and good ol' boys working on a bottle or a six pack or two.

When the floodway filled above the channel banks (like it was designed to do) the dirt and gravel roads there would be impassable for a short while but a pass or two with a grader put them back in suitable condition.

Here's my recommendation for the City: Put up some temporary fences around the active construction areas, take down the No Trespassing and Do Not Enter signs, then get out of the way.

That would be fine if people did not abuse the privilege. A few years ago when the levee roads were still open to vehicles, 4x4 trucks would have hill climb contests out towards Bachman Creek on the levees, tore the levees to pieces. A number of people would venture off the road and get stuck in the mud too. After some time, about when the Calatrava Bridge construction began, the levees were locked up.

There are still enough unlocked gates around to get in if the mood strikes.
