A piece of equipment fell nearly 20 stories and smashed the roof of an 18-wheeler's cab. Two people were killed Monday morning when a piece of debris fell from the top of a tower being demolished in the Mercantile complex downtown.
Dallas police Sr. Cpl. Jamie Matthews said a worker on top of the Dallas Building at the corner of Commerce and St. Paul streets was operating a Bobcat front-end loader when he ran into a portion of a masonry wall along the edge of the building. Part of the wall was loosened by the impact and fell 19 stories, smashing into the roof of a semi cab. The debris bounced off the truck and struck a worker nearby.
The driver of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene, and the worker died after being transported to Baylor University Medical Center. Neither victim has been identified, but both were in their 20s, Cpl. Matthews said.
The Dallas County medical examiner was also called to the scene.
Dallas police investigators used a construction elevator to reach the top of the building where the piece of equipment was working.
The Dallas Building is among three structures at the complex that are being demolished as part of a massive renovation project that will turn the historic Mercantile Tower into residential units.
Does anyone know who the demo contractor is?
I wonder how long the ensuing OSHA investigation will delay things. This isn't good.
I saw this posted on another forum re: The Merc. Is it true?
Dude, that building has just been a complete **** up since this project started. I really am wondering about the GC on this thing. I mean, before it started, they went in to do sewage testing for the building. They disconnected the building from the city main, and never reconnected it. So basically, during the demolition of this project, the workers were using the bathrooms in the building. Low and behold, when they get to the basement, 2 1/2 feet of raw sewage in there.
Remind me NOT to move in there when it's completed.....

Well, we will find out more now, that OSHA will be involved with this project.
RIP to those workers. I remember back in the mid-80's,i was in dt Dallas when that happened with the chase or the bank one center.a steel beam fell on someone.does anyone remember this?
No, I know for a fact that is not the case. I have been in the bottom after the Securities Annex was demolished. The was standing water there, but no sewage. The water had been there a long time. Their office is in the Continental across the street. There are lights on at night so it appears to be a fully functional building.Originally Posted by Columbus Civil
Is Hensel Phelps the contractor for the project?
If so, they have a great safety record and are one of the top contractors in the country.
They are involved, though I don't know any specifics.

I hope the Mercantile is not delayed due to this unfortunate accident while OSHA investigates, it may take up to 6 months.

Everyone,
Please remember to pray for the families of those killed.
Right now they need to know that someone cares.
I remember when the clock tower fell at the Dr.pepper site kiling 2 people because of a similiar accident where a worker hit a main beam sending the clock tower down. That was in 1997. I hadn't been at work a hour when one of my coworkers called and told me. I had just shot photos of the structures over a hour prior to it falling. So sad.
I have got some shots of debris being dumped out of the Merc building
i will post those later.
Everyone have a great and blessed day.

Isn't a basement full of sewage something you'd notice real quick-like on a hot summer day?Originally Posted by Columbus Civil

Why do they interview guys who have no clue. They were talking about no visable chute, then interview a random guy who says that the news of them throwing trash out the window is loud. Big deal. If you look at what they do, they throw out the back window into a designated area. TV media can be frustrating.
Edit:I know this is small, but can they please differentiate between the Mercantile Bank Building and the Mercantile Dallas Building. If they have to, call it the Mercantile Complex.

Could they not have found a better interview clip? You can't even understand the "downtown worker" due to repeated interruptions from his walkie-talkie. C'mon CBS11...that's just poor reporting.

I have to say those are two of the worst clips I've ever seen - very unprofessional and, yes, that guy being interviewed was not credible.
I'm not downtown today - has work resumed?
There wasn't any work going on as I was waiting for the bus this morning at 8:45 AM.Originally Posted by TobyAdams

I heard some noise while I was in the former Bank One Center. But I couldn't visually confirm anything visual.
While I was out today, I passed by here. There is no work going on on the demolition side of the complex, from the outside, and judging by the sound of things, nothing inside either. However, there were workers outside the Merc tower as well as inside. Also work is proceeding inside the Continental.
Thanks for the update - it's good to know things aren't sitting quiet
I saw demo work going on as I left home this morning. It didn't look like things were back to 100%, but I definitely saw things coming down again - mostly from inside, on lower levels.

I too, heard the familar and comforting noises of jackhammers and things falling over when I wlked the dog around 11a.
