    Angelika Film Centre & Cafe

Big D does big movie business, but it's still a third-tier movie town.

With the arrival of the Angelika Film Center, Dallas is taking a long stride toward catching up with the big guys.

With a prime slice of real estate at Mockingbird Station, a vast assortment of amenities and a professed commitment to quality films, the Angelika should bring an instant boost to Dallas' movie exhibition.

The potential strengths are numerous. First, there's the theater itself. Eight screens, all with stadium seating. The Angelika Cafe, run by Lisa Kelley of the Dallas restaurant Parigi, and a full bar. And, of course, the shops, restaurants and lofts of Mockingbird Station and nearby. There's a palpable buzz about the Angelika as a classy, easily accessible place to watch a film in style.

"The Angelika people are being very smart by appealing to a sophisticated crowd with all of the nice touches," says Bart Weiss, director of the Dallas Video Festival. "That should make it a destination that people want to come to."

Angelika also has the big three qualities needed to generate business: Location, location, location.

"We've got such a strong location here, between the DART line, SMU, the demographics of the area and Central Expressway," says Angelika's Ellen Cotter. "I don't think we'll be forced to play some of the films that we played in Houston. We're really trying to get entrenched in the Dallas arts community."

That effort includes plans to host events sponsored by local film festivals, including the USA and Deep Ellum film fests and the Dallas Video Festival.

I feel the Angelika (Mockingbird Station) and The Magnolia (WestVillage) are two of the most exceptional venues of their kind in Dallas.

DALLAS - The Angelika Film Center opened its doors in Dallas on August 3, 2001.

To thank the community for their 10 years of loyal support, they're throwing a "Party for Ten" today.

From 1:30 p.m. until 10 p.m., the movie theater is showing select films free of charge.

The free films are among those that made a significant impact on Angelika's 10 years of programming, the company said. Those movies include, Made, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Mulholland Drive, Bend It Like Beckham, Swimming Pool, The Station Agent, Pride & Prejudice, Little Miss Sunshine, Children of Men, Tell No One, 500 Days of Summer and The Town.

There will be prize giveaways at each screening, including a grand prize of a 2012 season pass.

Complimentary tickets will be available at the box office an hour prior to each film. Seating is on a first come, first-served basis. Also, popcorn and fountain drinks will be 10 cents.

Moviegoers are invited to help kick off the festivities with a cake-cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. in the cafe.

I would've sworn the Angelika opened in summer 2000, if not before. I remember seeing films there when I rode the train to work downtown--I thought that was 2000, but maybe I'm getting my summer jobs mixed up.
