Disney Cruise Ships coming to Galveston

Goldmine for Disney and about the closest Texas will ever get to having a Disney theme park:

More cruise magic is coming to Galveston.

Disney Cruise Line will announce Wednesday morning that the Disney Magic will sail 12 seven-night cruises from the Port of Galveston to the Western Caribbean beginning Sept. 22, 2012. Ports of call include Grand Cayman and Mexico's Costa Maya and Cozumel.

Rates for the seven-night Western Caribbean cruise itinerary departing from Galveston will start at $840 per person for a standard inside stateroom, based on double occupancy, according to a Disney news release. One travel agent said not to expect sales for passage aboard the ship that sleeps up to 2,700 passengers.

"Mickey does not go on sale. That cheese is way too expensive," said Steve Cosgrove, owner of Dallas area Dynamic Travel.

That's cool about Disney Cruise Line. My wife and I have been talking about how when our girl is 3-4 or so that we'd like to do a Disney Cruise - it's much easier to drive to Galveston (4.5 hours total) than it is to drive to the airport, check your luggage, get to the terminal an hour early, fly the couple hours, go gather your luggage, get transit to the dock and then check in. Better food options on the drive, too.

Looks like when Disney gets their new ships in operation, they're using the existing ship to expand the business. Good deal!

Great news for Galveston. Good news for Texans who now have the option of a relatively short drive to this type of amenity, instead driving or flying to out-of-state Ports of Call.

Now, if there was only a high speed train to Houston/Galveston from Dallas...

Not to mention cheaper. This will be a goldmine for Disney, IMO. They just made it a lot easier for people in the central part of the US to access their cruises.

It would probably make sense for Disney shuttles to grab people from DFW or contract out the service. Service to a hub is cheaper for air fare vs. going to Houston.
