The Church of the Incarnation ("COTI") has launched its capital campaign: "Lift High the Cross." The campaign seeks to raise $25M to expand the COTI campus northward along McKinney Avenue across from Cole Park towards Elizabeth Street. As of last weekend's "official launch," the campaign's quiet phase had already raised over $15M. The goal is a quick final phase with construction to begin in the fall.

Church of the Incarnation already owns most of the land to its north, the large vacant lot across from Cole Park. The plans call for Cambrick Street to be closed in order to make for one continuous set of structures along McKinney. The addition includes a new gathering/fellowship building next to the current sanctuary, a new education building with two wings, and a new worship space/sanctuary to house the church's "Uptown" contemporary liturgy services. The current, main sanctuary's entrance will be expanded toward's McKinney to create a continuous setback, and a colonnade will stretch the entire length of the new addition. The architecture is decidedly gothic, and matches the current, main sanctuary and chapel, the original sanctuary, although the new buildings will have all the modern upgrades. The interior of the new Uptown worship space will be a mix of contemporary and traditional, with moveable chair/pews with kneelers instead of permanent pews.

The church has really grown since the contemporary service started in 2004, and especially since the new rector, Bishop Anthony Burton, former Bishop of the Diocese of Saskatchewan, arrived in 2008. COTI has grown 35% since 2008. The additions and renovations/updates are long overdue. COTI was founded in 1879 and is one of the largest Episcopal churches in the nation. Full disclosure, I am a member of Incarnation. I'm sure many of the forum members may be bummed to see the prime property along McKinney taken up with additional church use, but I think the addition will be beautiful and the Church certainly does its part to support the neighborhood, especially North Dallas HS and other surrounding schools. COTI also houses Incarnation Academy, a small private school (toddlers - kindergarten), but I think the school may be expanded in the future to include additional grades.
