De Beers Stores to Open in Houston and Washington
May 23, 2007
OK, I can now bring you the whole scoop on De Beers (the retailer)'s U.S. plans. I just spoke to Guy Leymarie, CEO of De Beers Diamond Jewellers (formerly De Beers LV), and here is what he told me:
- De Beers plans to open stores in Houston, Washington D.C. (in the Tyson Galleria), as well as San Francisco this year (in Union Square). This will bring its total stores in the U.S. to six (joining New York, Los Angeles and Las Vegas.)
- They want to open stores in Chicago, Miami and Dallas, but are still looking for proper locations.
- The company is still searching for a new CEO for its U.S. division to replace Alyce Alston. Currently, Hamida Belkadi is acting CEO.
- The company, as announced previously, will open up an online store in June.
- It continues to open stores all over the world -- including, most recently, Korea. It also seems to be concentrating on the Middle East. It now has 17 stores. By the end of the year, it hopes to have 30.
- The U.S. stores are doing "very well," Leymarie says.

CALVIN KLEIN WHITE LABEL

NEW YORK — Calvin Klein will soon be coming to a mall near you.

Today, Calvin Klein Inc. will reveal more details of the retail expansion strategy for its better-priced Calvin Klein white label. The plan is to open five stores this November, followed by another five next year. On average, each unit will be about 10,000 square feet. The first five stores will be located at Beverly Center in Los Angeles; Lenox Square in Atlanta; Cherry Creek in Denver; The Mall at Partridge Creek in Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and Natick Collection in Natick, Mass. Cushman & Wakefield was the exclusive agent for these stores, which are owned and operated by CKI, a division of Phillips-Van Heusen.

As reported, PVH hopes to grow the CKI business by an incremental $2 billion to $3 billion worldwide over the next five years, making it into a $7 or $7.5 billion global powerhouse. If the store concept proves to be a success, CKI plans to turn it into a 100-door chain. Five more stores are expected to open next year, and the company has singled out cities and regions like metropolitan New York, Boston, Miami, Orlando, Fla., Las Vegas, San Francisco, San Diego, Dallas, Houston, Chicago and Scottsdale, Ariz., for possible openings.

ED HARDY

The president and chief operating officer of the Christian Audigier Cos., Henry Mandell, has an audacious plan. It is, simply, "to build an empire.''

Founded in 2004 by Christian Audigier, who designs the Ed Hardy collection and a namesake brand, the company's sales were $7 million in the first year; Mandell estimated volume will reach more than $80 million in 2007.
The first Ed Hardy store opened in 2004 on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles. Last July, an 1,800-square-foot unit bowed in Manhattan's Meatpacking District. A third store is located in Tucson, Ariz. This month, Manhattan experienced a one-two punch with the launch on June 9 of a 5,500-square-foot Ed Hardy store at 49 Mercer Street in SoHo, and the opening last Saturday of a 1,300-square-foot Christian Audigier unit at 273 Lafayette Street

More stores are in the works, including Ed Hardy units at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles in October, and on Lincoln Road in Miami Beach in August. The company is looking for real estate in Atlanta, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Dallas, Houston and Orange County, Calif. A site is also being sought in Los Angeles for a megaflagship for Ed Hardy, Christian Audigier and Smet.

LAMBERTSON TRUEX

LOS ANGELES — The luxurious, 2,000-square-foot space on Melrose Place here is retailing as Richard Lambertson and John Truex envision it, an oasis from gadgetry where sophisticated shoppers are treated as such.

The launch today of Lambertson Truex's store is a watershed event in the accessories brand's almost 10-year history, signaling the kickoff of its retail strategy. With the backing of Samsonite, which acquired Lambertson Truex in July, seven to eight stores are planned in the next few years. Las Vegas, Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, Miami and Boston are among the cities that are being considered for stores that range from 800 to 1,500 square feet

JUDITH LEIBER

The accessories brand Leiber plans to double its retail presence in the next two years, with hopes of opening boutiques in cities including Miami, Houston, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, Dallas and Phoenix. The company is also considering a second New York shop, according to a real estate source.

Want to see some real downtown retail scene? These are amazing... all of the Downtown Dallas retail plats from the 1940s.

It's interesting that CVS is only a few feet next to where Walgreens once was (in the Gulf States Building).
