Well, my life has been turned upside down so many times in the past year, I don't know which way is up anymore. :)

Okay, so my wife is pregnant with our first child due end of February and, with a change (for the better) in our current financial situation, we're looking to move when our lease is up end of November in our crappy, crappy, crappy apartment.

So, I need all you guys' help. We're looking for a temporary (1 year) living arrangement while things settle down (a little) in my job, with this child and while we start cleaning up our credit so we can buy something instead.

So, where's a good place that a small, burdgeoning family can go that's:

Kinda close to the city center (or at least still in the city)
Around or less than $1000 per month rent (no condos)
In a good neighborhood
Near DART
Quiet
Allows a cat (apparently putting the cat in storage for a year is out of the question)

We'd consider living in downtown proper if we could find a place that met the above criteria and wasn't a tiny loft or something. (We need more space than that...and rooms: rooms would be good.)

I've searched for stuff online, but that since this board is a great resource for this sort of thing that maybe you guys could give us some better advice.

My sanity thanks you in advance for your help. :juggle:

Putting the cat is storage for a year may not be a bad idea.

First off, congrats on the baby news! That's excellent. I think you could probably do downtown for around $1000 a month, you just wouldn't maybe get the square footage you're looking for. It could easily be done in 1900 Elm, but you wouldn't have the rooms you want (which I totally understand). It can be challenging living in an open loft with another person (esp. when your schedules don't match up!).

As far as true apartments go - the Republic Tower is set up that way, and you *might* be able to come in under $1000 with their specials, but I'm not sure. I know they advertise starting around 1200 or 1300/month.

I have no idea what Manor House's rates are, but that might be a good place to look. Canton Farmer's Market has a good selection, though I don't know what the prices are like.

Kirby, Davis, DP&L, Wilson - if you check into any of these, you'll want to specify that "rooms" thing up front, b/c some or even many of these units are open loft floorplans. I think pretty much all of the Mosaic is.

Post has a lot of apartments in Uptown, and with specials you might be able to find something in your price range. Gables as well. Of course there's also Jefferson at the North End, over near the AAC, for traditional apts.

That's a start anyway. There's a lot more out there, of course. I didn't even touch on Deep Ellum or Expo Park...many of those would probably be lofts, though you might still find something you like.

Wife and cat have already tested clean for that. Unfortunately, I'm now saddled with litter-changing duties. Ugh. I'm a dog person myself.

Sounds like the Village deserves a good look. I work with a woman who has one kid, and she and her boyfriend are saving for a house. They live in The Hill in the Village and pay around 950.00 monthly for a really large two bedroom apt. Granted it's in one of the Village's older complexes, but the place is kept up really well. Plus it's a short bus ride (I guess you could walk to the Park Lane or Lover's Lane station) to the rail station.

Wife works downtown, I will soon be working north of the Galleria area (Tollway & Spring Valley).

That's why we're looking for something, maybe not in the CBD itself, but close enough that we can shuttle back and forth to both jobs and every place else that we might need to go.

Someplace like Park Lane Place would be almost perfect...except for the fact that it's, you know, not built yet.

You might be able to get a good deal on a new apartment on Motor Street between Maple and Harry Hines.

Those apartments were just built in anticipation of the new rail station. Since that isn't open yet you might be able to get a really good deal.
