...at a substantial increase in density over what existing projects can pull.

That's cheap. But I'd still like to see it. Hopefully it doesn't look like another garden-style apartment building.

...or something that could be in P'yŏngyang.

Wouldn't it be cool to see someone take this design and start building South?!

It's really the same idea as an office tower: central elevator surrounded by offices. I'm assuming the real breakthrough has been in elevator design: less breakdowns, less costly to maintain. I don't think multiple elevators would have made sense 10 years ago.

Wouldn't you also need 8 sets of stairwells? I thought mid-rises required two directions of egress per fire code. I would think all those stairwells would eat up most of the space saved by eliminating hallways.

Maybe they just use fire poles?

One old building I saw on Maple did this by having stairwell next to elevator shaft. It was a narrow stairwell with intermediate stops between floors , but it served a purpose. The apartments were huge and the shared lobby on each floor tiny.

It's not a new idea.

It's not a new idea.

But it sounds like a good idea!

I lived in an apartment where we had an elevator just for my floor. It had two buttons: "Ground" and "Penthouse" HAHA!

I loved that elevator. Made it easy to put on my roller blades, grab my stick and the net, skate into the elevator and head out to the tennis courts. Much nicer than skating up at the courts.

If I was in an apartment I'd certainly like to have less shared/wasted space, seems like a good idea. Reducing the parking requirements would also help this type of development and support affordable housing.

I avoid fire code talk, but I've seen places with stairs melded on the sides, just prefab iron things that wouldn't count towards building area or be very expensive.
