does it remind you of a $375M investment that coulda been? :(

Hey, at least we're going to spend $100M + tearing down part of our airport and redirecting those bothersome passengers and airlines to Grapevine/Irving/Euless/Bedford.

Who says this city has no leadership!

Here's a couple of pics from this evening. They had some bright construction lights up, so sorry for the blown out pics...

Does anyone know the story on the media screen that's supposed to go on AAC? The NHL All Star game is right around the corner, so I guess they will not have it up for that? Maybe I missed something...

Cool pics.

The big "coming out" party skedded for Jan. 19 has been postponed though. No new date.

I can't imagine this means that individual stores/restaurants won't be opening though, party or no party.

Does this mean that the Plaza screens won't be on for the NHL All-Star game??

HarryMoto
10 January 2007, 02:32 PM
I hope not. I'm thinking it's just, for whatever reason, they're dropping the ball on the big party but that it's not reflective of any delays in retail openings or the screens.

AAC screen just approved at council - Hillwood and AAC came to an agreement and Hillwood retracted their opposition to the screen. However, due to delays and the original opposition by Hillwood, screen will NOT be up by all-star game. It won't even be started by then.

Everything is changing down there very quickly. Even going down there almost everyday it's hard to keep up with all the construction.

A year from now it will be seriously kick ass.

Video board time to be shared by Hillwood, AAC

Dallas: Developer gets priority except during premier events at arena

08:43 PM CST on Wednesday, January 10, 2007

By DAVE LEVINTHAL / The Dallas Morning News

After months of delay, a massive outdoor video board will soon hang from the American Airlines Center's southern face.

Arena managers and leaders of Hillwood, which is building the adjacent Victory development that includes a public square and 11 outdoor video boards of its own, struck a final-hour agreement that resolved long-standing disagreements over conflicting audio and content priority.

The two sides reached an agreement moments before the Dallas City Council was scheduled to vote on an ordinance granting arena manager Center Operating Co. the right to erect the 1,500-square-foot video board.

As both sides describe it, the complex agreement will give the American Airlines Center video board priority immediately before, during and immediately after most Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars games, as well as other premier arena events.

Hillwood's 11 video boards, valued at more than $30 million, will have audio content priority roughly 70 percent of the time, while the arena's board will have priority about 30 percent of the time, Center Operating Co. Chief Executive Officer Brad Mayne said.

Several council members threatened to resolve the disagreement themselves had an impasse continued, fearing that uncoordinated and competing audio messages would create dissonance in the large public square the video boards ring.

Since Tuesday night, officials from Hillwood and Center Operating Co. and council members traded dozens of e-mails and phones calls in hopes of reaching an agreement.

Satisfied with the two sides' compromise, council members unanimously approved the video board Wednesday afternoon after a brief debate.

"I'm sure they didn't want us to perform brain surgery with a dull shovel," council member Ron Natinsky said.

"The last thing that you want is 15 people around this table negotiating the deal for you," council member Ed Oakley said, referring to himself and his 14 council colleagues.

Both arena managers and Hillwood leaders say the agreement is effective immediately.

"No one likes the idea of going to a space, with a unique experience expected, and have it not work," Mr. Mayne said.

"We'll create a schedule of events on an annual basis and coordinate our efforts," said Jonas Woods, president of Hillwood Capital. "This is an agreement that's going to benefit the city of Dallas."

The $3 million arena video board probably will begin operating within two months, Mr. Mayne said. Arena officials had hoped to build it in time for the National Hockey League All-Star Game later this month, but that's not possible now, Mr. Mayne said.

Both sides plan to use their video boards to display unique video and audio content. Both Mr. Woods and Mr. Mayne say Hillwood and Center Operating Co. may sometimes coordinate content so that all 12 video boards would feature the same content.

Victory cannot meet hard deadlines. The W missed the NBA Playoffs by a week, WFAA missed its studio opening by 6 months, the balance of the rest is still not open. 6+ months late.

If the Mavericks make it deep into the playoffs one would hope that the balance of the retail and restaurants will be open.

The plan was(a year ago) that Victory Plaza would be 100% open by the NHL All Star game. No way that can happen. The construction guys are working like crazy though. After sitting dormant for much of the summer, Victory Plaza is really picking up.

I heard Chris Heinbaugh say the same thing- he said the additional 11 boards will not be operating until March. I have noticed a lack of activity on them the past month or so. What's the deal? Perhaps there is no point in having them on until most of the restaurants etc... open.

Only three things I do not see happening

#1 gay ass bridge
#2 the east AAC surface lot turning into a park
#3 the county jail evaporating

The rest will happen. Plus the House of Blues which is not shown.

And you see all that usable greenspace between the river and DT happening? And the Industrial Blvd area becoming a huge mixed-use haven? And the park or project happening at all? No tollway?

And what surface lot has turned into a park? What are you looking at?

So why did they tear down the old Ford watertower? And what is that big pile of fill leveled off at the top doing there? Looks like they are preparing the east side extension for the bridge now.

I just wonder why you have to post such negative comments such as this one? What proof do you have that this won't happen. You know, I gaurantee I could've shown you that picture in 2002 with Victory in the far background and I bet...hmm...all of Dallas' future, that you would have said, "That looks sweet. Go back and read a few thousand of Rant's post over the years and I think you will realize you are way off-base.

It is pretty obvious, even to the less informed reader, that the person creating the rendering ignored reality for the purpose of creating a more marketable image.

Those look like weeds in the rendering. The same weeds that are there right now. Industrial Blvd is already occupied with mixed use stuff. That junk is already there, save for the buildings in place of the jail complexes and Decker.

And what surface lot has turned into a park? What are you looking at?

The current surface lot just south of the AAC parking garage, east of the AAC. The drawing shows it as a park.

Note to all: This is Victory Version 4.0 or 5.0. This project almost did not happen many different times. For someone to say "I told you it would happen 4 years ago" is a damn fool. Much of this was not even on the drawing board, not even an idea or dream 4 years ago. Quit patting yourselves on the back, get down to Victory and buy something at the shops that are open. They need your support. Bad.

^well with all that said. It has not been publized that the shops are up and running. As much as I follow this thread, I was not even aware any of the shops were open. Time will tell, and I am sure after their big ceremony more people will make their way down to Victory. It does not help things that the park will be under construction till March, the apartments and condos are still being worked on, etc. etc. People tend to think a place is not open and won't visit when they are still putting in bricks, metal panelling and the parking lots look to be still underway. But when the W had its big opening, business has continued to be busy.
