Okay then it's set for Tuesday, August 12 at 6PM at the Stop and Think Hdqrs.........that's in Snider Plaza.
I wish more people were reading this thread, we haven't herad from a lot of you.
How about some hard RSVP's???
Is that next year, or did you mean Tuesday, September 12th?
As for me, I have my hands full with Fort Worth/Tarrant County politics, so I'll have to pass.

Yeah, yeah, that would be SEPTEMBER 12.
Everyone got that? SEPTEMBER 12! At the Pro Wright Amendment Headquarters. Yeah, that's right, sometimes we have to be diplomatic in life. Come on, are anyone of us THAT dedicated to this particular issue that we'd prefer to not walk into an office of a place whose cause we don't agree with? We aren't talking about asking Kelly Shakleford to have a happy-talk neighborhood crime-watch meeting at Planned Parenthood, for chrisesakes!! We can put our Wright differences aside (and any others) for a couple hours to discuss how we plan to select the future leaders, those verey people who we will entrust to have the best interests for the City of Dallas at heart.........Besides, we're going to have to get used to putting aside and behaving like diplomats...all kidding aside, that is.
(sorry, not trying to be authoritarian or anything, just want to quell any possible negative comments on this thread)

Well, you've over-simplified the whole matter but the basic answer would be a resounding yes.

So, does that mean you're not coming?
Yes, I have oversimplified and that's becasue we're talking about the Wright Amendment, not going to some devil worshiping, animal mutilators conference room. In reality, we're all adults with jobs and we get along fine in the real world while we may have vigorous debate in here, I don't see this group making mortal enemies out of each other over the debates we engage in.

Put it this way. If you can't agree to disagree on an issue like the Wright Amendment, this probably isn't the group for you. This group will probably never reach a consensus on all issues, but that's the beauty of it.

This was sort of the idea we had when a few of us met for the first time about 4 years ago... I love it- count me in! However, can't make the 12th but will be there in spirit. Someone take notes so they can be posted here.

Some of my better friends on this forum are people I don't agree with on various things.
The difference is they aren't being deceitful and actively being paid off by the spoils of the hypocrisy they spew. Honestly, the corruption sickens me and I let very few things like that upset me. If the S+T spin machine weren't active right now, it'd be a bit different.

Give me a friggin break. Good for you, I am glad you are giving back to the community. I think you are STUPID. This organization has a mission
"The mission of the Urban League movement is to enable African Americans to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights."
I belive the organization we are wanting to start includes everyone. The NUL has a purpose in its community, it is very focused. I think we want to serve all of Dallas and all races. So dont give me your BS, you just wanted to make a comment, and I called you on it like you do everyone els.

Paid off? It's called a job dude. It's unfortunate that politics can be ugly.
If you want to take your ball and go home because you don't like the place then so be it. Or how about this, instead of throwing stones why not come up with an alternative?
Suggested response 1: "Hey guys, this issue is pretty sensitive to me, can we think of an alternative venue?"
Suggested response 2: "I really think we should find a locale in the City of Dallas. Let's do something different."
Anyway, if you want to have this discussion, please PM me. SAT is my day job, the Dallas forum is what i want to do on my own time.

Glad to see we still have brains in our heads. That's why we wanted to do this. Because most of the folks on this forum are thinkers and I believe that the diversity found here will make for a really strong group, and an effective one as well.
Now, I'll ask the question: does anyone here have a alternative venue for our meeting? Again, I can probably get a school or a rec center. As it is, my home is my office so I don't have a conference room- I have a living room and it's just not conducive for a meeting such as this one.
Please keep your thoughts and ideas coming but let's also be diplomatic in the meantime. We don't want to start emulating the Dallas City Council.

What kind of safeguards will this group have to make sure that never happens?

My suggestion would be to select one "let's get established" issue, one issue that everyone can agree on, consistent with the mission of the organization. Then focus on that, go out and do something that really makes a difference. As this is a new organization, probably with very limited resources, it is important to get a quick win if you want to sustain it. Otherwise, if you're shooting broadly, people will bog down internally with disagreements, and it won't make any visible difference in the community because you've spread thin resources to a breaking point.
We don't need more "watch dog" critic groups that do nothing but complain. So, if educational quality & accountability is an issue you want to tackle, do something that adds value like a mentoring program, something tangible beyond going down to Ross Avenue and demanding more accountability.
After you create good will by really making a difference, then figure out how to start raising money, and then expand the mission accordingly.
Just my two cents...

Here's an idea. Form a political action group to improve and build more urban-oriented schools.
We need cozy little elementary schools in our urban neighborhoods, staffed by quality faculty. No more of these sprawling campuses. No more portables. No more derelict mesh fences. No more dried-up school yards filled with stickers.
I think that's something everyone here in the forum could get behind, and it would go a long way to improve our urban neighborhoods.

We are postponing the meeting tommorrow (9/12/06) for another date- to be determined- and possibly a new location. We need more active responders and one of the meeting co-hosts will be unable to attend after all.
I'll throw out some new dates:
Sept 20, Sept 25, Sept 28, Sept 28.
What's your pleasure??? Let us know!

I have space available for any of those days. If its on Monday and Tuesday I'll be able to join you. If it's on Wednesday, I would just let you in the space.
And again we can do the sales center for The Beat. Thought some of you might like to see the model. Or we can do a conference room in South Side.
Just let me know as soon as possible. Thanks!

I don't know what the Beat is, but if you think people would like to see it, then fine. I think Mondays and Tuesdays are better for most. Although it's not on my calendar, I have a nagging feeling that I scheduled something for Monday and I have yet to hear back from the person with whom I was supposed to meet. Is Tuesday safe for everyone?

Hey, my move to downtown Dallas is complete so I'm enthusiastic about getting this group started! Did we ever reach some kind of consensus about what we were going to be doing? I'm all for activism in general, but some focus would be good.

Sorry the last 2 weeks have been incredibly hectic. Set a wedding date, started a new job, buying a new house, and solved the Wright Amendment issue (joking). I am actually moving to Fort Worth at the end of the month but plan on staying heavily involved in Dallas issues. It seems as if there are more people getting interested in meeting so let's pick a time a date (again.) I am also planning on bringing a few non-DallasMetropolist posters that are interested in joining.

sorry...i was doing so good about checking back here.
if we're still on for tonight...lets meet in the lobby of South Side on Lamar and i'll find us a place to go. i have NO idea how many will attend at this point.
i was offering space and wasn't really organizing this so can't say about the time. on other dates it seemed like it was going to be 6pm in the past so lets go with that.
if you check this thread, please pm me or post here and let me know that you're coming. i would have added food and drink but its kind of hard to tell how many folks are coming.
if i can get a good head count...ill order a couple of pizzas.

Allright.....let's do this, then since this is sort of turned into a Micky Mouse deal, organizatoin-wise...
IF YOU ARE SERIOUSLY INTERESTED IN THIS, I NEED YOU TO FORWARD ME YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS AND A GOOD PHONE NUMBER. I WILL EMAIL AND CALL EVERYONE WITH REMINDERS FOR THE NEXT DATE. SO I WILL FORCE YOU TO COMMIT!!!
My new pick is Tuesday, November 14 at 6pm at South Side at Lamar.
Please send me your email addys and phone #'s so I can start herding all you cats! (trust me, I'm good at it...)
Remember, this is a new committee that will focus on local elections. As it is, we still have time to get a jump on the game, as our candidate field keeps changing in these early days. We'll have a full slate for Mayor and half the city council seats will be up for grabs. So, on your way to finding and sending me your contact info, your other homework assignment is to be thinking about people you know who you think are articulate and sophisticated enough, maybe even knowledgeable about local issues, someone who might make an ideal candidate for council, I don't care what city council ditrict they may be in.
Can we do this??? I want to do this and I need strong commitments from all who is interested.

then dont forget to ask admin to help you post a notice.
