This article from the Dallas Observer infuriates me since she is my council representative! :angryfire :angryfire

Why does an area of Dallas allow a person of such rotten tactics to remain on the City Council?
Are they so complacent and bury their head in the sand they do not see the damage she does to her own areas?

circle gets the square..
that sounds about par for the course, unfortunately..
for what its worth, I think the rest of the council shares similar feelings of "you've gotta be kidding me, right?"
we'll see though.. i'd like to think dallas' leadership might mature as the city grows..
one could only hope anyway.. maybe this new election will be a turning point.. i'd say we're certainly due..

I have extensively reported on her latest exploits on my blog, Dallas Progress.
Her anointed replacement is Gloria Hogg. Expect more of the same unless you vote against Hogg.
I would suggest that you gather all of the people in Distrct 4 that you know and drop me a private e-mail. We can stop the trail of cronies that have plagued this district for the last 6+ years.

I saw the Observer article and almost cried with frustration, because you could insert almost any council person's name, and that article would be still be valid. I have to out myself... I will miss Laura Miller- and I wish her strong mayor campaign would have been successful.
But we really need to get rid of Maxine!!

What ever happened with the FBI investigating of half the city council memebers? Was she one of them?

That was one of my favorites, right up there with ITL's Drunk Dirk.

Part of the problem in District 4 is the same as it is everywhere: finding decent people to run. It's a thankless job, the pay is low and the hours are long and you have very little real power. There are altruists who sincerely want to (and can afford to) serve the city, but they are few and far between.
So, most of the people who do run are either dilletants who don't need to support their families (Sharon Boyd's "housewives extraordinaire"), or they have various ulterior motives (crooks), or they just like to have a title and get invited to all the cool receptions (social climbers), or they just see the job as a stepping stone to some other political office (political climbers).
In District 4 as in many districts lately, the voters have only had a choice between evils and tried to choose the lesser, if they didn't just give up and stay home. You can't really blame them.
UrbanHope is trying to create an environment where some better candidates will come forward and maybe have a chance to improve the situation. I salute him, and I hope he's not alone. We need to couple that kind of effort with a real effort at reforming the current system. The strong mayor proposals last year were terribly flawed, but something like that is going to have to happen. I think it will be a long slow process, but there are glimmers or hope.

Isn't this her last term?
Yeah but she's already walking aroung Gloria Hogg from the Park Board as her anointed successor. Expect 8 more years of racially-tinged FBI investigation generating name calling if she wins.

Also don't forget the 'vote-harvesting' that is rampant in some areas and got a victory for Medrano over Monica, for instance...

Urban Hope, you need to run for city council. What's keeping you from doing it? I think most of us could scrap some money together for your campaign.

I appreciate it. Right now, I really can't see putting up with all of the crap that I would have to in order to win.
But my problem is that I LOVE where I live... saving for a decent house and building the biz is the priority right now.
Now, if Chip's Burgers and Chuy's and Pueblo Arriba relocate to the Southern Sector, we'll talk.
BTW, we should (hopefully) announce on a new motel we're closing very soon.

We can all talk and talk and talk about the ills of District Four BUT........ I'll go out on a limb here and say that I'm the closest person to that district, in fact mt neighborhood was carved out of district four 10 years ago and added to district seven to dilute someone's chances of winning reelection (something like that, I'm not trying too hard to actually remember).
So, who lives in District Four???
Anyone? Anyone? Anyone???
Anyone planning a lateral move (ha ha) to District Four? I've heard some nice things about Pleasant Grove........they have some noce muffler shops, used tire stores, and a few shopping centers. There are a few nice homes out there too. So, who's moving out here?
That's the problem, everybody else wants to do something about the problem but until they are part of the problem, aka, being a voter from the district, talk is talk. I mean, come on......does anyone here know anyone who lives in District Four??? If so, why aren't we all trying to get that guy to run?
And why does everyone always tell me that Dwaine Caraway has so much baggage? Can somebody please tell me why the guy's so bad? He's certainly better than T-Reese. And Gloria Hogg is just awful. I've gone rounds with her before on a certain development (the same one that squared me off with T-Reese a few years ago when she said that old people don't want to live in condos and that nobody wants wants to open their front doors to see trees....), and at Park Board meetings, Hogg just doesn't get it. She's not all there. And she WILL stoke the flames of racial diviseness on the council. It just wouldn't be her not to.
So, anyone got any ideas on how we fix District For? I man, I can;t vote against Hogg and I only know a handfull of folks (Peidmont Scyene HOA) who can and will. But it's a big district and there are parts of it that even I am afraid to go venture. There's some scary hillbilly inbreeders in some of these parts.
So, who's moving to District Four???

Almost all of the people who claim that Dwaine has baggage are sh--ty reporters like Gopher I mean Gromer Jeffers who are pawns of the Black chiseler establishment (hence the love affair with Don Hill for Mayor) and the Dallas Morning News.
Dwaine is the only cares about all the citizens of D-4, not just who can give him a donation; you have no idea how many times his phone rings for city help from people because MTR doesn't do a damned thing. I've never seen anything like it.
I hope people in D-4 on your side of town remember what you're saying once May rolls around.
Parkdale and Pleasant Grove should have their own district. The way that Chaney and Maxine drew those lines is criminal. Tom Delay would've been impressed.

Ummm......to be sure- Parkdale and Pleasant Grove are NOT- I repeat NOT- the same, they are mutually exclusive, in fact Pleasant Grove used to be a town before it was annexed by Dallas in the middle of the last century, and yes, it used to be a quiet, pleasant bedroom community......so it's actual borders don't come close to ours, about three miles away at its northern edge. Parkdale is closer to Fair Park and South Dallas than it is to Pleasant Grove but demographically, I would reluctantly agree that we might have more in common with P-town than with the areas around Fair Park..........although the association BOD are planning a home tour next Spring and we have come up with a few brand image names for the greater Dallas community to know us by: the top contender is "Lower Lakewood"........ heh heh heh

Got it.
This stuff has got to be redrawn at some point. I'm still convinced that they draw these crazy districts 1) for votes and 2) for land mass so they can lay claim to large pieces of the city budget without actually doing anything for it.
