I've been getting the itch to move again (but probably won't for a couple more years), so I've been more closely investigating some neighborhoods that are a) in area I like and b) affordable. I've noticed a few houses for sale in Lochwood the past few months that are pretty nice. After driving around the area, I have to say it looks like a great neighborhood.

Would it be a good area to invest in a few years from now?

I, too, have been looking at that neigborhood. According to someone I know who has lived in Lochwood for 30 + years, the closer you get to Jupiter the worse it gets. Jupiter is pretty junky and the grocery store at Jupiter and Garland is closed now. Garland Road is awful there, too. Unfortunately, the less expensive homes are in that direction. The closer you are to Old Lake Highlands, Lake Highlands, and Lake Gardens neighborhoods the better - for now and, I think, for the future. My friend loves the neighborhood, though. Her adult daughter has also moved back to the neigborhood.

I grew up in this area. I would buy as an investment, but not to live in. To far out, and the 1950's houses are teardowns. But I think anything inside the 635 Loop is only going to go up, and that area is "inside the loop".

Anyone remember Carousel Raceway that used to be at Lochwood?

I don't remember Carousel Raceway, but I do remember Penny Whistle Park on Northwest Highway. The new development David Weekly is building at the site of the old driving range on Northwest Hwy & Lake Highlands almost backs up to Lockwood. That should help the area. Also, the high real estate prices in Lakewood should force people to move a little further away, into Lockwood and Old Lake Highlands.

Garland Road is transitioning, and as more of the original older residents sell their homes, more young families will move in. Younger residents usually buy more things so that should help the retail along Garland Road.

Just promise not to clear cut your lot like the person that bought the teardown shack on Easton just north of Garland Rd did.

...and I would live there, not just buy property as an investment.

I love the 1950s houses in this area and wouldn't want them torn don -- I guess that's a matter of personal taste.

I'd like to stay in East Dallas, and this is one of the few neighborhoods in my price range (at this point).

I live in Eastwood which is the neighborhood just south of Lochwood (once you go south of Easton, you are out of Lochwood and into Eastwood). I bought three years ago and LOVE it. I have noticed that the farther north you go in Lochwood, the worse it gets. Martha T Reilly elementary is slowly turning around, but the retail along Jupiter / Garland Road is absolutely abyssmal. Not to mention the duplexes along Lake Gardens / Lochwood Blvd.

But, I'd say for the most part, Lochwood seems like a safe place. The trees along the creeks in the neighborhood are awesome.

Scott, that really is a pretty area, I always try to cut through there to enjoy the trees along the Dixon Branch when going to the Home Depot. Of course now we have such a wonderful HD on Skillman @ NW Highway :p

Scotsmeadow and Yorkspring are also very nice...

Columbia, what are your criteria? Depending on what you value, there are different suggestions. Do you need good schools, scenic beauty, price appreciation, architecture, diverse population, mass transit...?
Anyone who's thinking of moving should at least have rough checklist before investing your hard-earned money (in my humble opinion).

Yea! Those are tops. Fernald from Lake Highlands on down to Lochwood Blvd and to Lochwood Park is something to behold also! Then there's the trails behind the park in the woods.

Valley Spring is a really nice street also. yea, you could do much worse than Lochwood for sure!

I think Lake Gardens is the prettiest street in Dallas.

Little one-story ranch homes in the middle of a forest of tall trees. It looks like a hobbit village spread out in a forest.

If they ever building McMansion on this street it will totally ruin the grand scale that the high trees give.

Check it out.

I seem to recall a couple years ago that instead of a McMansion someone wanted to do the opposite and put a double-wide mobile home on a lot there.

Definitely... we used to go there all the time. I haven't thought of that place since the '80s. I can't even remember when it closed.

Carousel Raceway. I loved the billiard balls used as a clock on the outside of the building. The raceway was fun too. Played pool there. It was a unique part of this area, but like many things, it had to go to make way for "progress."

Lake Gardens has some very interesting houses on it. There is one that was custom built in the 1940's. It has a very low slope roof, an interior courtyard, and tons of 1940's and 1950's features built in-like push button light switches. There are some wonderful houses in that area. Go a little farther back into the neighborhood on some of the harder to reach streets and even more architectural marvels lie in wait, if you have time to spare to look for them...

I finally did find a picture on-line, courtesy of Red Oak Kid on Flickr... it made my day when I found this, brought back a lot of memories... in the earliest part of the 1980s, this was the place to hang out and play video games...

Correct me if I am wrong. Was there not an enclosed mall at the corner of Lochwood and Garland Road that had a Pancho's in it? If I recall, it closed and sat derelict and decaying for some time until it was razed. Anybody remember anything about this place?
