Isn't that the old Tucker's restaurant? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard that it was once a Tucker Automobile dealer, for which it was named.

You are not wrong on either point... was Tucker and was an old dealership.

BTW... Victoria Hall a couple doors down has the potential to be an incredible live music venue (think Sons of Hermann Hall)

Between Three Sheets and Bryan Street Tavern there are a couple decent bars/pubs starting to pop up in the Ross/Bryan Place area... Now get those car lots closed finally and hope some retail/restaurants/galleries/etc open up.... there is a great drive from Lakewood to the Arts Dritrict

I went last Wednesday night, and sat out on the patio. It was pretty Cool. Pizza was good and wait staff was friendly.

I didn't like the (forced) valet parking, though. Even though it's "complimentary," you still feel obligated to tip something. Besides, the parking lot isn't even big enough to require it. Valet parking in Dallas is becoming a BiG pet peeve of mine.

I heard wood partners may be looking at some land/tear down on the east side of central. Not sure of its validity.

New shuttle service offers rides in Dallas and Arlington – sometimes for free

by Sarah Blaskovich

You may have seen these eco-friendly cars around the Arts District or Uptown.

A new eco-friendly shuttle service is jumping around parts of Dallas and Arlington. Called E.F.R.O.G.S., which stands for Eco-Friendly Rides on Green Shuttles, the company is currently operating three “global electric motorcars,” which look like extended golf carts.

But golf carts they are not, says co-owner Gary Haag. The vehicles scuttling around DFW are allowed on roads marked at 40 mph and under, and they can go about 27 mph at top speed. (For reference, a standard golf cart goes 17 mph, Haag says.) The cars are battery-operated and hold up to 6 passengers.

“We want to be green, we want to be something people like, and our goal is to fill a niche of what cabs and limos don't do,” Haag says.

Haag and his crew, which includes several co-owners, will use the vehicles in two places: in Arlington for special events at the Rangers Ballpark in Arlington and at Cowboys Stadium; and in Dallas roughly from Mockingbird Lane south to downtown Dallas (and spanning east and west to include Uptown, downtown, Knox/Henderson, Deep Ellum, and the Design District).

The cars in Arlington will charge a $5 minimum for rides. The city has an ordinance in place for these vehicles (attached PDF; see Article X) – which are largely non-existent in the DFW area. “People didn't know about them. But we are in the land of SUVs,” he said. “The reason [Arlington] has the ordinance is because they'd seen other cities who had them, like Washington and St. Louis. It was just lucky for us.” The company had to pay Arlington $350 per vehicle, plus fees for background checks, defensive driving for vehicle drivers, and other small costs.

Haag hopes to have a small fleet of 15 vehicles by Super Bowl time.

In Dallas, rides with E.F.R.O.G.S. are free, though the drivers accept tips. They aren't allowed to charge because Dallas doesn't have an ordinance in place to govern cars like the global electric motorcars. Instead, E.F.R.O.G.S. hopes to make revenue from advertising. Haag said the company will have TVs installed in the headrests for advertising purposes, plus signs on the back of the vehicle.

Haag developed the idea for E.F.R.O.G.S. after seeing One Arts Plaza's “art cart.” He also co-owns a local valet company called Professional Parking Solutions, and said he used his 10+ years in the business to help launch E.F.R.O.G.S.

He hopes that the shuttle isn't abused by people who've had too much to drink. “We don't want to be the drunk driver option,” Haag says. “We're there, but we don't want 10 people thinking they can pile into our cart and bring their drinks with them.”

The company currently operates Wednesdays through Saturdays, 5:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. However, Haag says they get calls seven days a week and won't be able to operate more frequently until they acquire more vehicles. “I hope people will be willing to grow with us,” he said.

I was in Austin a few weeks ago and I guess the free downtown parking is being reviewed by city hall there. I read something were a buisiness owner downtown said that even though they offered valet service, he estimated only about 30% of his customers used it. He felt that ending the free parking in downtown Austin would hurt business, since it was obvious that most chose to park free on the street than valet. Not so much Henderson Ave, since it is thriving; but that's something that downtown Dallas should really look at.

Well she mentioned it:

Last spring, Badovinus branched out, opening Neighborhood Services Tavern on hopping Henderson Avenue. The menu had the same look, but the place had a different feel: It was really a tavern, and quite an appealing one at that, with a long, welcoming bar, a pretty little patio, high bistro tables in the dining room and jangling acoustics when it was busy. The offerings were similar, but the cooking was more focused, the service more together. I liked it a lot. Like the first one, it was an instant hit.

Three Sheets has a full parking lot when I go by..will have to check it out!

Apartment developer Wood Partners buys one of last vacant tracts along Henderson Avenue

East Dallas’ busy Henderson Avenue will soon have even more traffic – from construction trucks.

Apartment developer Wood Partners is buying one of the last large vacant tracts along Henderson just east of North Central Expressway.

The 2.5-acre property at Henderson and Belmont has been empty for more than four years since old apartments were knocked down on the site.

“We're planning on building 106 units, with a construction start mid-January,” said Wood Partners’ Dallas director Todd McCulloch.

Wood Partners’ three-story project will join two other new rental communities along Belmont that are owned by UDR Inc. and Phoenix Property Co.

...

Wood Partners already has built several central Dallas rental communities, including the Glass House highrise in Uptown and the Alta Design District and Alta 1900 Lofts apartments in the Dallas Design District.

They only allow zoning for 3 stories on this street that is short sighted. Everything withing the loop 12 area should be zoned for at least 5 stories we need more density for true urban energy and more walkable living conditions.

From Urban Daddy:

As part of your intense quest for deep understanding of all humanity, you’ve infiltrated some of the girliest places on earth.

Watched Gossip Girl with the Kardashian sisters. Hosted fondue parties at Oprah’s place. You once attended an Amy Grant concert.

But none of these has prepared you for your next mission: partying in a pink hair salon...

Welcome to Beauty Bar, a new 1950s vintage salon turned dance club, now open for those nights when dancing is a must.

Now, we’re going to shoot you straight: the place is pink. And very sparkly. But hear us out...

The next time you and your friends are out on the weekend, you may find yourself requiring a lounge where the girl-to-guy ratio roughly matches that of a Taylor Swift concert. That’s when you’ll head here.

Walking in, you might feel as if you stumbled onto the set of Hairspray, but with more subwoofers. You’ll see vintage salon furniture, ’70s light fixtures and pastel walls smothered in sparkles.

Make your way to the bar and order a martini while well-manicured gals sip on French Flips (mango vodka plus a banana liqueur). Then grab one by the hand (watch the red polish), glide onto the white-and-green-tiled dance floor and see what happens next...

All in the name of research, of course.

Former Craft Dallas chef to open restaurant on Fitzhugh

Jeff Harris, who recently stepped down as chef de cuisine of Craft Dallas, has announced plans for a new restaurant on Fitzhugh near Capitol.

Harris expects to open the new restaurant in April with former York Street sous chef Matt Balkie and former Dragonfly general manager James Cobb.

The location is interesting. DMN real estate reporter Steve Brown last year reported that commercial property owners along the stretch of Fitzhugh just east of Central Expressway are working to draw more upscale tenants. That story quotes a real estate developer who says the area could “wind up just like Henderson”.

Jeff Harris, leaving Craft, to open restaurant on Fitzhugh
12:20 PM Tue, Jan 04, 2011 | Permalink | Buzz up!
Leslie Brenner E-mail | News tips

I had been trying to reach Craft GM Thomas Karamuchi for two days, having heard that chef Jeff Harris planned to leave Craft Dallas, but blam -- Pegasus News beat me to it. (Good job, Teresa!).

I just spoke with chef Harris, who is working on plans to open his own restaurant. He has a space on Fitzhugh Ave. near Capitol, and hopes to open "sometime around April," he says. His number two will be Matt Balkie, whose last gig was as sous-chef at York Street. "We're working on a menu, and still working on the name," says Harris. In any case, it will be "chef-driven, using local produce when we can, and still be seasonal. It'll be more of a casual environment, definitely at a lower price point than what I'm doing now." Harris was one of the 10 chefs I included in last year's Best in DFW: Chefs story.

Whatever the menu winds up looking like, it may well involve a brick oven, in which he'll do pizzas and perhaps whole roasted chickens.

The space, he says, which will seat about 80, plus some seats at the bar and possibly a patio, is gutted right now. "The plans just got submitted to the city; we still have a lot of work to do."

I just spoke with Karamuchi, who says Harris will remain at Craft till mid-month, at which point Tim Bevins will take over as chef. Bevins, who was on the opening team at Craft Dallas, is currently executive sous chef at Craft Atlanta. A new general manager, James Cobb (whose resume includes Dragonfly at Hotel ZaZa) started yesterday, replacing Max Rudberg, who left late last year.

Natsumi - Closed. That strip of stores is always congested. Wonder how much this has to do w/ the pedestrian unfriendliness of Henderson vs. the yogurt bonanza in Dallas with all the competition. Either way, too bad.

http://eatsblog.dallasnews.com/archives/2011/01/natsumi-down-but-not-out.html

Nancy Nichols reports over on SideDish that foodie favorite Natsumi Gelato and Frozen Yogurt is closed. Owner Natalie Nguyen confirms this.

Nguyen says that when she opened, she thought she would get lots of family and neighborhood foot traffic. But the Henderson strip ultimately evolved into a cluster of hip nightspots. 'Made it tough to drop by for some cool gelato.
She's still got Natsumi Kitchen, the fast-food Japanese concept in Shed No. 2 at the Dallas Farmers Market, although she says traffic is slow there, too, right now.

What will she do next? "I'm taking a little break," she says, regrouping and figuring out how she might reopen at a better location. Stay tuned.

I think she overestimated the neighborhood that was in walking distance to the store in that there are not that many families in that direct area and the homes behind that center in a three block radius are not gentrified as much. Until the gaps are filled in that area will remain mainly a bar restaurant scene to drive into. I will say that she might have done better down the way at the intersection where Cafe San Miguel is located as that has become a walkable retail area on weekends.
