I always found the Guerrilla Gay Bar such a hypicritcal idea... Lets get out of the gay bars but make the bar a gay bar.... If I want a place to relax and hang out with friend the last place I think about going is any gay bar or a bar with a large amount of gays. Gay bars are all about picking up guys.
Your idea of relaxing may be different than others. I know that i had a great time and most people there did as well.
Most bars in Dallas are pick-up bars. Don't even kid yourself. Gays don't corner the market on that. I have been accosted by enough drunk sorostitutes on greenville to last me a lifetime. I just shake it off and continue to have fun with my friends.
There are gay friendly bars that aren't meat-markets. There are straight ones as well. They are usually one in the same. That's the great thing about diversity in a city. Usually, when you get people who get together who unwind in the same way, the place is full of different types of people. The problem with Dallas is that often times that diversity is segregated.

As with just about every other creature in nature, as people mature the desire for sex becomes more manageable. Old coots want to get it as much as they did when they were young bucks, but they've usually figured out other stuff is fun too. Something about changing hormone levels, too, but I don't really have first hand experience with that....
It will be interesting to see the course of the Knox-Henderson social scene over the next decade.

Okay I was sterotyping gays and the bars like round up and jrs. It was more to prove the point about how hypicritcal the idea is. Check out their website, http://guerillagaybardallas.com/
"It's just about showing folks that we exist outside of the ghetto, being adventurous and seeing new places to hang out, and making new friends outside of the regular "gay bar" setting."
For me taking over a bar is not the way to do this.
I suppose it is more that I do not agree with their method of showing the rest of the public they are normal and can fit into other crowds.
There is a point I am trying to make but not sure how to explain it. Seems there is a ever growing group of gays that do not want to be part of the typical gay lifestyle. Guys who see the sterotypical gay and want none of that. To me this group is hypicritcal because they are trying to say we are differnt we can be normal being gay is not everything about us. While in reality it is and that is something I never understood about most gay guys. I suppose it is an easy trap to fall into... sorry taking this thread off and topic and diving into the subject too deeply.

Quit whining downtownguy25. I don't think "hypicritical" is a word nor the concept you were shooting for. How about, "my masculinity was deeply offended by the hoard of homosexuals boosting the income of Barcadia," which is owned by lesbians, if I am not mistaken.
Dude, this thread is about Knox-Henderson. The proximity of Oak Lawn to Knox-Henderson isn't inhibiting. I would expect a response such as yours if they had descended on Babydolls or some other strip club you may seek refuge in. That would be the day.
Quit being judgmental. I know Dallas is vapid but it surprises me that you would bring it here.
One love.

There seems to be quite a bit of activity in the vacant building right next to Barcadia. Looks like someone may be moving in.
Also, what's the story with the large parking lot that was poured on the opposite side of Henderson? Lights were installed but every time I drive by it is blocked off.
Last, any word on either Hacienda on Henderson or what is going in next to Capitol Pub and Soley?

Yeah I was wondering about that parking lot as well. And the blocks of apartments on Bennett are coming along pretty fast.

First of all, everyone please hijack some other thread. THanks.
Secondly, if you can't crush ass on any given night in Dallas at a bar, it doesn't matter if you're gay or straight, nor does it matter who is at the bar, it's you. Virtually every bar you walk into in Dallas is a pickup bar (as said above). You should easily be able to walk into a bar and take someone home within two hours, if that's what you're looking for.
To end, and back on topic, does anyone know what the Andres brothers plan on doing with that long empty strip (I believe) they own?

I've gotta say, I know it is coming accross as hatred, but I gotta say there is slight truth to some of this. My partner and I have been together for 10 years and have ceased going to Oak Lawn for that very reason. We prefer Henderson and Skillman/Live Oak cuz we don't like the constant propositions. We like to hang out and talk with people without the lame come-ons. With the people we have met around Henderson (striaght guys included), we have felt very accepted and are comfortable in these places. I think the location has alot to do with it, but this may turn out to be a brand new concept not labelling a place gay or straight.

One of the MOST spectacular developments I have seen in a long time as far as quality, construction quality and design concept that is done to the level of multimillion dollar homes is PASEO.
I toured this place and it was amazing. Very beautiful and full of high quality details. I was extremely impressed, the all felt like fine homes, not condos. I am shocked they built something this nice in that neighborhood which is still transitional at best. PASEO is one of the best real estate offerings in the city I think.
The style is Southern California (think Santa Barbara circa 1920-1930's). Took a tour and it really blew me away with the quality and design.

They started at 235,000.00 for 1200 sf with a huge terrace and went up to 550,000.00 for 1900sf. Most were around 300,000.00.

Donald Chick to open Jones restaurant on Henderson Avenue
4:16 PM Thu, Feb 26, 2009 | Permalink | Yahoo! Buzz
Christopher Wynn E-mail News tips
Donald Chick, a partner in Victory Park's La Condesa restaurant, will debut his first solo eatery called Jones, May 15, on the gentrifying end of Henderson Avenue. (Look for it in a rehabbed cluster of buildings next to Barcadia.)
Chick is still finalizing the details, but the overall concept is "California roadhouse with a farm-fresh mentality." Expect a front herb garden, lots of indoor/outdoor spaces and a back lounge overseen by DJ-hipster Parker Lawson.
We can tell you that Chick's friend, York Street's Sharon Hage, played a role in helping to select the exec chef, to be announced.
And what about that name? Chick says that it's low-key and all-American, he also liked the "ambiguity" of it. Keeping up with the Joneses, indeed.

Had dinner at Soley! last Wednesday night. It was pretty bleak. We were the only table from 6:30 PM on. For the record, my meal was awesome. That being said, the price for four people with two cheaper bottles of wine was ~$290. They were out of many items because they are revamping the menu to more casual (see cheaper) dining. We were told that business has been dismal and they feel they are too far from 75 to really offer fine dining. I think it is ultimately a good move.

I've been saying this from the beginning when I ate there.
On another note...I shopped at Newflower Farmers Market Yesterday...fantasitic!!! Go check it out. My girl friend was worried about a "scary" crowd (her word, not mine), and was outspoken about how comfortable she felt shopping there. I think this store has really benfitted from the Whole Foods closure.

I've been twice now on my way home from work and I love it!
Cheaper prices than Wholefoods on many of the same products. I hope that lasts. Also, I think Newflower will have a wider appeal than Wholefoods (and I like WF), not just because of the prices but also because of the items they stock.
The atmosphere was nicer than the Sprouts I have been to but not as chic as Wholefoods or Central Market obviously.
Here's hoping we'll get one in Oak Cliff!

York Street is not on a 75 cross street. I'm not sure what one has to do with the other.
For the same amount of money Soley! was charging, one could simply stop at Hibiscus right off of 75 or go to one of the many places on Knox. The middle and Ross end of Henderson seem to be developing into a more moderate, neighborhood type setting. Pulcinella failed and it looks like Soley! is acknowledging that their original model will not work in that location. Regardless of how good the food, service, and decor were, people were not going.
York Street is a tiny restaurant and a destination completely unto itself. It is not a part of the Henderson Avenue businesses. When someone goes to York Street, they decided they were going long before they left the house.
All of that being said, I don't really care if the proximity to 75 is an issue or not. I relayed that the owners of Soley! feel that it is an issue and they are taking actions to remedy that issue. It's their business so I trust they will do what is right for their bottom line.

No answers here either - but shared frustration over the 7-11 on Knox. WHY? Also, same situation with Chip's!?!
What greedy, foolish landlord kicked out a solid, long-time tenant (Chip's) in this economy b/c he thought he could rent that odd building to a higher-paying tenant? Any increase in rent is lost as the building continues to sit vacant.

That vacant land west of Pearl Cup has been there forever. You would think some investor would jump on it but I'm pretty sure whoever is selling it has a nice price tag on it.
I would like to see the city put in a pedestrian crosswalk right on Henderson at Old Monk/Tei-Tei similar to the Katy Trail/Knox one where it lights up when pedestrians are detected. I swear someone's going to get hurt bad right there it's crazy with people crossing and the amount of congestion.

I've never noticed that. So is it like the one on Cedar Springs with the lights in the road? And it just detects people automatically?

Yes it flashes when it detects pedestrians getting ready to cross.

I remember reading somewhere that the crosswalk on Cedar Springs has become too expensive to maintain (something about the light bulbs embedded on the street going out all the time). But I've seen crosswalks where the yellow crosswalk sign itself lights up, rather than lights on the ground.

I spoke to an investor...they're shooting for a soft opening during 4th of July weekend.
The Hacienda on Henderson to open in former Cuquita's spot
Late-night diners hated losing of Cuquita's on Henderson, where you could order falls-off-the-bone chicken in a sweet and spicy mole at 3 a.m. The beloved Mexican restaurant closed last summer, but there are more tacos to come. Dallas restaurant and club veterans Patrick Tetrick and Miles Zuniga have teamed up to bring live music, enchiladas and $2 frozen margaritas to the patio. Their new restaurant, the Hacienda on Henderson, is expected to open in the old Cuquita's spot in the first half of June.
"We were very lucky to get that space," Tetrick said. "A lot of people were interested in it. That area is blowing up and I think it could be the next McKinney Avenue. It's an excellent property."
Tetrick owns Lotus, a posh but relaxed McKinney lounge, and has been in the club business for 20 years. Zuniga owns two neighborhood bars on Henderson -- the Slip Inn and Vickery Park.
Read more about the Hacienda on Henderson after the jump.
Tetrick and Zuniga have hired "a well-known kitchen manager," but cannot say who he is yet. The menu is expected to include moderately priced Tex-Mex, and the Hacienda will still be open late nights. "The property is known for that, and we intend to keep it that way," Tetrick said.
Tetrick and Zuniga are doing a major renovation of the property, including the addition of a Henderson-facing patio. The restaurant was built in the 40s or 50s and the partners have encountered major hurdles in pulling permits and getting it up to code. "It would have been quicker and cheaper to scrape it and build something new," Tetrick said. "But we like the old house and we think it's a place that people recognize, so we wanted to keep it."

I got a call on Friday from someone at the City. I inquired about a lit pedestrian crosswalk and also repaving of Henderson. He said they have done studies for the crosswalk and might actually put a traffic light in but the money needs to get approved. Also, the same thing with re-paving of Henderson--especially he said down by Louie's, etc where it's really bad.

I finally checked out the Newflower Market this past weekend and had avoided it because of the surrounding neighborhood. Great prices and good produce! They seemed to have a larger selection of Vegan items than even Whole Foods (but the Lakewood Whole Foods wins for prepared food bars, olive bars, and the like). The store is very clean and the staff are extremely nice. And, it's only 3 miles from downtown!
