What's the street work going on at Bennett & Fuqua? Anyone?

This has been covered in previous pages---new apartment developments--the demolishing of the old apartments that were there began earlier this year.

Two restaurant closings in the area:

Henderson Cuquita's closing this coming Monday

The restaurant confirmed it: A classic Dallas late-night haunt is shuttering. Other Cuquita's locations will remain open, and the staffer I spoke with said they might even open other locations in the next few months. But still. Another hard blow in closings this year. See you there before Monday.

Note it isn't just the old-timers closing in the area. TG posted yesterday that Pulcinella Ristorante, in the shopping center across the street with Sushi Axiom and Natsumi that needs some sort of official name, already closed its doors.

Pulcinella Ristorante on Henderson Avenue in Dallas closed down

DALLAS — Pulcinella Ristorante, a pizza place in the Shops on Henderson center on Henderson Avenue at Capitol, shut down on Saturday.

Owner Dwight Sellars could not be reached, but a representative from landlord Andres Properties was seen at the center on Monday, informing other tenants including Veritas Wine Room, Sushi Axiom, and Natsumi Frozen Yogurt that the space was officially vacant and that a search was on to find a replacement.

Pulcinella was an offshoot of a restaurant of the same name that Sellars opened in Katy in 2006. The Dallas branch reflected a considerable investment including the installation of a wood-burning oven and significant training of the staff. However, the restaurant was in an area already heavily saturated with pizza places all with their own loyal followings, including Louie's, Fireside Pies, and Campania.

Although the phone was still operating at the Dallas branch, the number at the Katy location was disconnected.

I think clothing stores, etc, will fair better at Shops of Henderson than restaurants.

I agree w/ businesses that cater to daytime traffic. W/ Cap. Pub, Soley, Veritas Wine Room, Natsumi, Sushi Axiom, and Fish City Grill there appears to be plenty of nightime activity. But why clothing stores? Is there enough interest in the clothing market to sustain and drive business?

Well any kind of retail not just clothes. There needs to be more population density along Henderson to supoort all business there and that will be coming soon. Henderson is in a transitional phase and unless you have a really good concept for a restaurant or store most people don't frequent that far down on Henderson (even thoug it's only like 1/2 mile from 75).

I noticed some slabs being poured just to the west of Blue Collar Bar. Not sure if it's parking or foundation. Cuquitas is now closed so I assume there are plans for that building. Beyond that I think the refurbs continue at McMillan and Henderson as well as the other end of the building with Capitol Pub.

Sunflower Farmers Market opening 1st Dallas-Fort Worth store in Plano

03:23 PM CST on Monday, November 3, 2008
By MARIA HALKIAS / The Dallas Morning News
mhalkias@dallasnews.com

On Nov. 12, Sunflower Farmers Market is opening its first area store in Plano at the intersection of Preston and West Parker.

The Colorado-based organic and natural supermarket chain plans stores in Dallas and Austin early next year.

The Dallas store will be at 1800 N. Henderson Ave. in vacant building that had housed a Carnival Food Store in Old East Dallas.

The Plano store takes up about half the space vacated by Albertson’s.

Sunflower positions the produce section at the center of its stores. The company said it buys fruits and vegetables directly from local growers and suppliers. Its produce departments include a mixture of organic and nonorganics. It sells natural and organic meats and poultry and almost 800 private-label grocery products.

Founder and chief executive Mike Gilliland said he sees the Dallas area as a multiple-store market for the company. He started Sunflower in 2002 and also founded Wild Oats Markets in 1984. Wild Oats was acquired by Whole Foods last year.

Sunflower operates 19 stores in Arizona, Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico and Utah.

Looks like they are laying down some foundation on part of that huge empty lot on the north side of Henderson at Fuqua. Also, the sign for the apartments at Belmont/Henderson says "Coming Fall 2009".

Is there a business or community association dedicated to the Knox-Henderson area? I think there needs to at least be a website dedicated to the area that provides information on the retail, restaurants, nightlife, and, most importantly (in my opinion) parking.

When I first moved to this area mid-year last year, I did some digging to see if there was a neighborhood association or a website with info on upcoming projects in the Knox/Henderson neighborhood. Both Vickery Place Neighborhood Association and Cochran Heights cater mostly to home owners, and NOT apartment dwellers, but correct me if I am wrong.
I come from Downtown Dallas where there WAS an association that USED to meet monthly at different venues to discuss new builds, restaurants, night life, et cetera. I think they changed it to quarterly...BUT it was a great source of information, and it was nice to experience food and drink from new venues and take tours of the facilities.
Is there REALLY no such thing here????

And yes - shocking that there is no association dedicated to Knox-Henderson apt. residents and businesses.

The City of Dallas has begun repairing several roads in the last few months; I am wondering why Henderson has not been included. It is one of the nasty surface streets in Dallas and has notable investment going in all around it. Anyone know if it is on a resurface schedule in the next few months? It would really help the area.

The re-surfacing has been brought up many times. I'm not sure if anyone has the latest news on it but Angela Hunt is our local city council rep for the area---if you call her you could maybe get some kind of answer. For some reason I think someone mentioned awhile back the reason is the city doesn't want to lay down new pavement if trucks putting in all the construction are using the roads--but I'm not 100% sure on that.

My wife and I got some cake balls last Friday. Very rich - and very good; especially the brownie ones!!! They opened their store front on Northwest Highway and Ferndale, across NW Hwy from Tony's earlier this month. Definitely worth checking out, although they're only open from 10am-5pm, Monday through Friday.

So the Pearl Cup coffee house opened up Saturday Feb 14th. I stopped in yesterday morning on my way into work. I sure hope this place makes it, but the odds are stacked against it I think.

Firstly, virtually no dedicated parking. When I asked about it the guy at the counter said that all the properties were Andres-owned and therefore open to any patron. I question whether that's really true. Don't think Cafe San Miguel would take too kindly to me parking over there and then trotting into the coffee shop.

Then scoping out the interior, not a lot of comfortable seating that might engender a clientele that will "adopt" the space and add to the bohemian feel a coffee house strives for.

Only half-and-half on offer to cream my coffee with and had to stoop over the shorter-than-average condiment table to prepare my coffee to my taste.

I sincerely wish this place well and will leave an open mind at this point. Perhaps it's just growing pains at this point. It's worth another few visits to see how it evens out. Sure would like a successful challenger in the neighborhood to McStarbucks and I love having something on the east side of the highway.

Other neighbourhood news: Last Friday night, I was ovewhelmed at Barcadia by "Guerrilla Gay Bar" -- a monthly organized event in which the gay community "crashes" a straight bar location (but always with prior arrangements). The turnout was so huge that the overflow carred into the Blue Collar Bar and the Slip Inn. It was a raucous evening and from what I could tell everyone was having a lark.

Nice to see the gays even giving this part of town the nod with regard to its trendiness and upswing on the social consiousness of the city.

It wasn't like that at all. Actually, this was way larger than usual. These events happen in cities all over the country. The idea is to expose the two communities to each other in a way that is non-threatening for either. Most gays wouldn't go to these bars in a small group simply because they are apprehensive about the reception that they would get. I think that the same thing happens on the flip side of that coin as well.

Believe me, there were still tons of guy hooking up with chicks. I even saw some recruit gay wingmen to help in the cause. (I was one of the wingmen) I do think that this event was a little too large for the selected venues. I really felt kinda bad for all of the regulars who felt displaced by all of these folks. At the same time, if there was any progress made in bridging the gap of understanding between gays and straights, then it was worth it.

I, for one, would love to see a straight version of this. It seems that the only "safe" place for straight folks in the gayborhood is the Rose Room. I find that when I convince my straight friends to venture outside of S4, they tend to have a good time. It's only through direct exposure to each other that we can dispell stereotypes and understand that we are not all that different (at least, outside of the bedroom).

Relax, it's not like we sent General Ru Paul and her horde of crazy gay activists down there. 99% of the people down there were folks just looking to have a good time in a different environment. I'll bet when the owners made their bank deposits the next day, they weren't pissed.

How would they like it if one of us called fred phelps to one of their bars?A lot of these bars on Henderson, Greenville, Dtown, Uptown, etc have a healthy population of gays in them on plenty of nights...you just don't know it. Times have changed and gays don't hang don't feel compelled to hang out on the Cedar Springs anymore. My gay friends are much more likely to be on Henderson than the "strip". If you have trouble hooking up with chicks because gays are around...it's probally not the gays, it may just be you. And chicks love a guy that 's open minded and not a homophobe. At least, that's been my experience.

I always found the Guerrilla Gay Bar such a hypicritcal idea... Lets get out of the gay bars but make the bar a gay bar.... If I want a place to relax and hang out with friend the last place I think about going is any gay bar or a bar with a large amount of gays. Gay bars are all about picking up guys.
