hey all. my name is Jake. i currently live in phoenix az, but i am moving to DFW towards the end of the summer to finish school, and start my life. any recommendations on places to live, and stuff to keep myself occupied in the void of life which always ensues after a move to a new city? at any rate, i am looking forward to it, and thanks for any info and insight anyone can provide for me. :D

1) where are you finishing school
2) do you prefer suburban or urban living? Most of us will recommend urban apartments near the city core of Dallas, but if you're going to school in Denton, that won't make much sense.
Welcome.

If you're going to school in Dallas, The Village is a good community for college kids. Let us know where you'll be going to school and we can help you out more.

Welcome to Dallas. Tell us what kind of area and style of living you're looking for and we can be more specific.

thank you all for you welcome. :D
in phoenix people would look at you funny if you were looking for help. hahahaha...
anyhow, the neighborhood i live in now is a 1930's - 40's red brick neighborhood. close o the city core, but a little bit out. i'd like to be close to nightlife, and conveniences too.
keeping in mind i am a college student. i have already looked at highland park and cried over the prices. oaklawn seems pretty ecclectic and cool. but either way UTD or UTA would be about 30 miles off right?
again thank you all for the warm welcome, and hospitality. it's one of the reasons why i decided to make my new home Dallas, Texas. :)

Glad to help. This ain't Phoenix! :)
I assume you have a car and aren't totally reliant on public transportation? If not, then God help you if you go to UTA! Seriously though, if you go to UTD, have you considered Addison? There's lots of nightlife and club activity and apartment complexes though it's kind of suburban and not particularly alternative. Someone else suggested the string of youth-oriented apartment complexes called The Village in north Dallas (www.thevillageapts.com) which would put you somewhat closer to urban Dallas neighborhoods like Oak Lawn, Uptown and Deep Ellum. I'm not sure what the commute is like though to UTD from there but The Village is not far from Central Expressway, aka 75.
If you go to UTA, and want an older neighborhood (which is what it sounds like you have now), you might consider North Oak Cliff. It's older, near I-30 so you have a straight shot into Arlington, away from downtown Dallas, making a reverse commute against traffic assuming you go to classes in the morning and come back in the evening. North Oak Cliff is largely residential but there's a small restaurant/club area in Oak Cliff called the Bishop Arts District but that's not your only option. You're only 10-15 minutes max from Uptown and the West Village, downtown, Deep Ellum, Oak Lawn, etc. Topographically, Oak Cliff is one of the prettiest areas of Dallas because it does have actual rolling hills.
Hope this helps.

awesome. thanks much! i have heard a bit about the bishops arts district actually, and it seems like my kinda place. i'm more laid back, and like a quiet area that's not to far from an epicenter of activity. i also love the architecture of older neighborhoods as opposed to the cookie cutter neighborhoods you get in housing developements. i do have a vehicle so commuting is not a problem, though at random intervals i like to take mass transit. i am not sure why. hahahaha... :) again thanks.
