Okay, I know everyone will think I have an obsession with street lighting after viewing my threads. I don't get out the way of 635 too often, but I noticed that between 75 and 30, these extra tall lights (for lack of proper terminology) are being installed along the freeway with an end coming to the typical "Y" designed ones in the center of the freeway. These are the lights we typically only see near major interchanges. At least we know why virtually no street light maintenance was done over the course of the last couple of years. (Don't forget about the half-missing Jupiter Rd exit sign that broke apart 2 years ago). ha. Anyways, overall, I think that this will cut down energy costs, and is probably a very practical idea. However, I am curious about the light placements and would like to hear from anyone who lives in that area. Instead of being down the center of the highway, they are scattered well into the grassy areas on both sides of the highway. There will be 3 or 4 on the north side, and then 3 or 4 on the south side, and it kind of jumps back and forth with no real pattern. It seems this will shed extremely bright light into the residential neighborhoods that back up to 635, and I am slightly curious as to whether or not the neighborhood members opposed this or were even aware this was going to happen.

There was a DMN article on this recently, they are supposedly designed to limit light into residential areas.

kozzy, this group has more obsessions than you can shake a stick at. Your concerns sound perfectly reasonable to me.

This sounds like the high-mast lighting that Houston has on every major freeway. Personally, I love the high-mast lighting ... in comparasion, the traditional "Y" lighting looks out-dated. They need to add more of this lighting throughout Dallas - especially on lower Stemmons between 183 & Parkland where the "Y" lighting doesn't even work.

Not a fan of this lighting..... Too much light pollution filtering into surrounding neighborhoods no matter much try to control it.

Could this be part of the LBJ reconstruction? At the High Five site, one of the first actions taken was to install additional high mast lighting and were later fitted with extremely high wattage bulbs...almost as powerful as daylight. I think this is a precursor to LBJ reconstruction.
