So...the Republican candidate will come down to either the Asst DA that prosecuted the Texas 7(Shook) or the Judge in who's courtroom the Texas 7 were convicted(Cunningham).
Does Shook live on Bob-O-Link? I jogged past some little shindig they had a few weekends ago.
Someone spammed White Rock Lake over the weekend with Cunningham campaign signs along the paved path and along Mockingbird. That was tacky.
I sat on one of Cunningham's juries for a felony assault with a deadly weapon/attempted murder case. He came off as very smart and ran a real efficient court room.
The problem is I can't vote in the March primary....if I do I can't sign the petition to get Kinky on the ballot!

I have a hard time getting enthused about a guy who has a web site and can even be buggered to get it working properly in Firefox.
(No, I don't really make political decisions entirely on candidates' web sites. Not entirely, anyway. But it does leave me with a foul first impression.)

Toby lives in the Casa Linda area. I plan on supporting him in any way that I can. The fact that he never sold out and went with the money added with his record as a prosecutor makes him the strongest candidate in my book. Who cares if he has a website. Does that make him a better DA?

If you are running in a county-wide race and are serious about winning, you probably should have a web site.

Agreed. Firefox use is expanding. They should have been more thorough in their design.

FF has 12.61% of the broswer market share in just 1 year. Hardly cutting edge... more like "watch out IE." :p

And I wonder why IE finally is releasing a new IE7, with tabs no less, after refusing for 3+ years to do so?!
Now, back to Shook.

His slogan is "get all Shook up." How can you not like that?
Even Lakewooder and I agree on this one. Toby Shook should be the next District Attorney of Dallas County.

GOP candidate pulls out photo
02:43 PM CST on Monday, January 30, 2006
Dallas County District Attorney candidate Dan Wyde has been raising eyebrows as the March 7 Republican primary approaches by using a photo of Democratic contender Craig Watkins in campaign events.
At a forum last week, Wyde whipped out a photo of Watkins and said the black attorney was what the county would get if he didn't win the Republican primary. He also told the audience that Watkins had an office on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
"That's crazy," said Calvin Stephens, chairman of the African-American Leadership Council for the Dallas County Republican Party. "He ought to run on his own merit instead of that race-baiting crap."
Wyde said he's trying to put the Republican Party in the best position to win in November, not race-baiting. He theorizes that Watkins, the 2002 Democratic nominee for district attorney who came within less than 10,000 votes of beating incumbent Bill Hill, will win the Democratic primary.

^^Hopefully Shook will beat this guy in the primary.

I would prefer a prosecutor be the head prosecutor for Dallas.
I have heard that DMN is not supporting Toby because he is a prosecutor.

One of the other Republican candidates had an interesting letter-to-the-editor in the DMN a few days back.
In it he stated something to the effect of "Shook has been a supervisory-level DA for going on 12 years now. How come nobody is asking him about his role in the fake drug scandal? He was either totally ignorant of it so where was his supervising, or he was involved in covering up the sordid lack of control in the office. Which is it?"
Now, it's obvious he wants to win instead of Shook, but does anybody know what role Shook played in that fiasco?

From what I know, Shook mostly does prosecution cases that are based on Murders and that type of thing. Drugs are probably not done in his department.

I respectfully disagree. Prosecutors are usually switched from court to court. There is a good chance Mr. Shook has been involved in some drug cases.

Toby was leading the prosecutions and eventually got convictions (one-by-one) of the Texas 7 prison escapees who killed Aubrey Hawkins in Irving at that time.

^You state that as though it were a major feat to acomplish. I'm not trying to discount Mr. Shook's resume, but, a twelve year old could have presented the case against those guys and got a conviction.

I'm not an attorney nor a cop, but there were complications...
If you will remember the 7 were all pointing fingers at each other to place blame, and the cases had to be proved for each -- also a twelve-year-old might not have been able to get a such stiff punishment, beyond the fact of proving guilt.
Toby was the top prosecutor for this type situation so Hill put him on it...you're saying perhaps a rookie should have been assigned?
Maybe Mrs. Hawkins would have something to say about that..

Uhmmmm, let's see. . .escaped convicts (some with violent convictions already), rob Oshman's during the holiday season. . .hold store employees hostage in the process. . .steal guns and amo. . .kill police officer in the process of escaping. . .story draws national attention. . .the search for them draws even more attention. . .their capture even more attention. . .during that time, the public is repeatedly shown photos of the fallen officer and his family who have been left to pick up the pieces of their lives.
Killing a cop is a capital offense. Any person's fatal injury during the commission of a felony = murder (called felony murder rule).
Jurors came from conservative Dallas County, Texas. Jurors in Texas also decide punishment.
I'm just stating that with those circumstances, there was no doubt that they'd all go down hard, no matter who was prosecuting the case.

Toby was also instrumental in the Darley Routier case. He has been instrumental in most of the high profile cases.
Are you saying that any rookie can be in charge of high profile cases? Even if they are easy cases, you wouldn't want a rookie in the lead position. That would be idiotic on the DA's part. You choose your best. That obviously was Toby.

I've known Toby for 32 years, and we ate lunch with the same group every day in 10th and 11th grade. You get to know a person pretty well in that situation.
Those lunchtime discussions encompassed a lot of things which were pretty high-minded for a bunch of adolescents. Toby really was a bit of a late-bloomer, but bloom he has -- he's a tough guy when it comes to these criminals and protecting the citizens of Dallas County. I don't think Perry Mason would have had a chance against Toby.
We also grew up going to school with Henry Wade's kids and saw a lot of ol' Henry.
I truly think Toby also has what it takes to be a legend. If anyone can ever eclipse Mr. Wade, it is Toby.

Toby Shook not only has the experience and integrity needed to be our next District Attorney, he also has a plan... a plan to keep us safe.
Working with all of our community — prosecutors, police and the citizens of Dallas County — here, in his own words, is how Toby Shook promises to win the war on crime.
1. Strengthen Community Involvement In The War On Crime.
I will form a “Citizens Advisory Committee” of community and neighborhood leaders to meet regularly to help target problems in their neighborhoods. I will establish a “Citizens DA Academy” to educate the public and media about how the DA’s office works to keep the community safe.
Also planned is a “DA Volunteer Posse” where interested citizens can volunteer their time and talents. My goal is to have total community involvement and support for the mission of the DA’s Office and the war on crime.
2. Forge Stronger Ties With Law Enforcement To Ensure A “Fake Drug” Scandal Never Happens Again.
I will host regular meetings with local law enforcement leaders and officers on the street with the goal of enhancing communication, cooperation and coordination towards our common goal.
3. Create the “COPPs Task Force” Within The District Attorney’s Office.
This will be a team of highly motivated and experienced prosecutors that partner with law enforcement and community leaders to actively identify and aggressively address problem crimes, high-impact offenders and/or high-crime areas. This team will devise proactive strategies and tactics for investigating and prosecuting the “worst of the worst” criminals in Dallas County.
4. Pursue Organized Gangs Who Terrorize Our Neighborhoods.
Whether it’s gangs like the Crips or the Bloods, or just three criminals who conspire to deal deadly drugs, these thugs will be brought to swift and sure justice by the increased use of the state conspiracy law. This law carries harsh penalties for those that engage in organized criminal activity.
5. Target High-Risk Probation Violators For Speedy Arrest.
For too long, probation violators have walked away from their punishments and obligations without worrying about that “knock on their door” by the men and women in blue. I pledge to create a multi-agency task force, with the DA’s office taking the lead, to target these high-risk absconders and get these criminals off the streets as soon as possible.
I will enlist the public’s help by creating and publicizing the “DA’s Most Wanted List” of bond forfeiters and probation violators. I will target these offenders for a very simple reason: With fewer criminals walking the streets, we will have less crime in our neighborhoods.
6. Investigate And Prosecute Unsolved “Cold Cases.”
I will create a “cold case” capability within the DA’s office to actively and aggressively investigate and prosecute unsolved crimes. I believe that no victim of a violent crime should be forgotten, and no violent criminal should ever escape justice.
7. Target Criminals Who Use Guns In Their Crimes.
I pledge to focus the full attention and resources of the DA’s office to prosecute criminals who use a gun in their crimes. Dallas County criminals will soon learn that gun crime means hard time in a Texas prison.
8. Pursue New Public And Private Grant Monies.
In a time of shrinking budgets and limited resources, we need all the resources we can find, from any source, to fund our offensive against crime. I pledge to manage Dallas County taxpayers money wisely.
9. Mobilize The Nation’s Best And Brightest Prosecutorial Team.
Dallas County crime victims deserve to be represented by smart and tough career prosecutors. I will seek out and find young lawyers that share my passion for prosecution.
10. Bring “Transparency” To The DA’s Office.
I will be fully accountable and accessible in my term of office. I will bring an unprecedented “transparency” to the DA’s office to allow the public and the press to quickly and easily see the swift and concrete results of my 10-point “COPPs Plan.” Citizens will have easy access to the DA’s office because I intend to be the people’s lawyer.

I would not like to get into exactly what Toby thinks of Wyde, but it's not complimentary.
Further, having known Toby for 32 years, I have never heard him utter anything remotely bigoted and never the "N" word.
Toby has had friends of different colors for all those 32 years (we grew up with some of them). I have personally seen a good representation of different types of people with Toby on our old Wednesday nights out and at his home.
We have quite a few cops in the ranks of our friends and as they keep moving up to leadership positions, Toby will be able to work very well with them and others. He is very respected in such circles and has received many endorsements from same.
