I think the Weather Channel has a show on tonight at 8:30 on what Dallas would be like if a tornado were to hit it. Just letting ya'll know. :)

We've kind of been there, done that (http://www.dallasnews.com/s/dws/spe/2002/hiddenhistory/1951-1975/070002dnhhtornado.43df80c2.html). Though the skyline was slightly different in 1957. :)

The show was a "what if" an F-5 tornado hit Dallas. Pretty much, it just said everyone would die...and if it hits during rush hour that's probably true. I could see thousands of cars in the Dallas Mix Master being thrown into the buidlings of downtown Dallas.

I think they blew it out of proportion a bit (ie, the tornado isn't going to touch down on the entire city of Dallas). However, it did bring up good points like what the hell would you do? Hide in the basement that you don't have?

if it did happen i would hope i lived cuz i think i would be consumed with curiousity over how mayor miller would react and if dallas would re build itself quicker than NO...i know that is so sick and morbid but i would be following it close if that happened and i lived

I loved it--had quite a flare of drama to it!!

oak,

Of course Dallas would rebuild faster. NOLA is a sinking hole waiting for the next Hurricane of 06 to hit it.

I think if you just mixed us all up and stirred briskly, you'd get a nice Cafe au Lait.

Never understood stories like this. Why does the news try to make people live in fear. Suppose it helps the ratings.

There is a show on the Discovery channel about a F5 tornado hitting Dallas. This seems to be a much better show than the other one on the Weather Channel

WOW... Its great to see Dallas on TV... But I dont think I like all of the dooms-day drama...

I found the whole show to be somewhat unrealistic. The chances of a tornado hitting right smack downtown Dallas is pretty slim to begin with. Plus a tornado of F5 strength hitting right smack Downtown Dallas Or Downtown Fort Worth would be even slimer then getting a tornado at all. In point you have a better chance of getting struck by lightning. Grant it yes we have seen Downtown Fort Worth and Dallas get hit with smaller strength tornados But think about how rare that was and how often it has occured. Plus the damage modeling they did on the show was so unrealistic in relation to the buildings. Maybe we should make a video up of what would happen if a super tornado hit the Discovery Channel TV Station. Lets see if they like the favor in return.

I think the Discovery Channel did a good job, with this show. National Geographic did a show similar to this in HD. It showed the F5 tornado going through DTD. Our downtown looked as if it was bombed afterwards. They showed tornado hitting the green building and all the glass blowing out in 2 seconds. NCTCOG did an extensive study on a F5 tornado hitting DFW. National Geographic used it in its show. The point all these shows try to tell us, is not “if” but rather “when” Dallas is hit by an F5 that we are ready. It’s only going to be a matter of time.

From tonight’s show.

1867 was the last time a tornado hit the M-streets, Lakewood, White Rock Lake Area

1894 was the last time a tornado hit Downtown Dallas and Uptown(Oak Cliff along 8th street was hit too)

1957 was the last time a tornado hit Oak Cliff

1978 was the last time a tornado hit North Dallas-Preston Hollow

Tornadoes in the historic record are infrequent in the city of Dallas, but do occur. In each case there was loss of life. A contemporary version of the 1867 and 1894 tornadoes following their historic path would ruin much of Dallas as they removed large trees, roots and even sucked the grass bare from the ground.

I see that the Ballpark was called a "Dallas Stadium" --- well Arlington taxpayers, thanks for footing the bill for us again...

I dont know why but it seems to me like Tarrant county gets more tornadoes.. especially Arlington for some reason.

Ugly suburbs attract them. Kind of like trailer parks.

Seriously though, it's because of the heat and the way storms move that prevents them from forming as much in Dallas County. Just watch sometime as a thunderstorm comes across the metroplex, west to east. You can see it fall apart on radar.

didn't downtown fort worth get ripped to bits back in the late 90's?

it would most certainly suck, but like mikedsjr said earlier. the Big D is hardly NOLA. Dallas has $$, and wouldn't dick around waiting for FEMA to get on the ball.

you may be right, but there isn't any scientific evidence at this point to prove that... only observation.

Hopefully Dr. Chuck Doswell will address this soon. *grin*

If you check out www.tessa.org there might be information on the DFW tornado scenario that was presented by Scott Rae from NCTCOG. They placed the track of the May 3, 1999, tornado over the city in its most destructive position. Seems it would have had to start at south fort worth, and I believe it ended in Plano. The destruction was in the billions of dollars.

Found this on You Tube... I don't think it is from TWC but it is pretty wild and only takes up about 2 minutes... Give it a look.
