Petition filed to recall Thornton-Reese

04:38 PM CST on Friday, January 6, 2006
By EMILY RAMSHAW / The Dallas Morning News

A Pleasant Grove resident filed a petition Friday to recall Dallas City Council member Maxine Thornton-Reese.

J. Christopher Bates has 60 days to collect and turn in signatures from 15 percent of the active registered voters in council District 4 — about 6,450.

Mr. Bates said he and other concerned constituents will kick off their campaign this weekend at the Fiesta and Kroger grocery stores in District 4.

His petition to the Dallas city secretary’s office accuses Dr. Thornton-Reese of being “racist, as displayed by her public emotional outburst” and of “unfairly and unequally” representing her constituents.

Dr. Thornton-Reese said Friday she was unaware that Mr. Bates had filed a petition. She said she had no comment on the recall effort.

I wonder if J. Christopher Bates is Jewish.

Has the T-Reese offered any response to the whole situation?

I hope this succeeds, District 4 needs better representation. I hope residents there don't look at a recall as "T-Reese is a victim, we need to rally around her..." and instead say, "we deserve better than this, because our representative needs to be a reflection of us..."

I hope he keeps us updated on his progress.

This is the story that started his efforts.

Excuse my ignorance, what's a JDI store? Dallas CAD lists this address as a single family residence.

Maxine Maxine! She always wins despite her troubles. Remember when judges threw out her election against former city council member Larry Duncan because her people did some sneaky stuff with ballots, etc? She still won in the election! Then, good ole Dwain can't beat her.

What MTR has is a lot of cronies and a machine that allows her to mysteriously pull out election after election.

As you all can see, the community suffers greatly with her in office. I was in a neighborhood meeting in her District in which the police said that they would love to do a Red Tag sting operation in Oak Cliff (where cops take down doors of boarded up houses b/c that's where dope dealers and violent criminals tend to sleep) but they don't have the overtime money to fund it... and this lady is sitting on $4 million. She hasn't spent one dime! WTH! You can also see that she is unresponsive to her constituents.

If you look, there's never anyone defending her. She pulls these elections out of her hat and then sits there for two years and does nothing. I just wish that someone would've known that she did pay her city liens and we wouldn't have to deal with this crap.

I agree that there is plenty that needs to be done with that money...but in oak cliff there is a MUCH more immdeiate safety issue and public health issuethat needs attention....dogs
on any given morning evening or nite you will find packs of wild dogs roaming the streets and alleyways....last year i was chased by a large(at least 70 pound pit bull) from right in front of SOC all the way to blueitt flowers clinic by the freeway
these packs of dogs are a health hazard and a public safety issue

I have heard about the dogs and it is a major problem. I've them come right up to the car when I'm driving along side streets.

I have been studying how other cities deal with the issue so we can get this worked on.

Cars are excellent control devices for overly populous dogs!:~)

Seriously. Don't take any crap off any dog roaming the streets. If one looks at you sideways, either get away from it (but never run from any dog, that is a great way to encourage an attack), stare it down and cow it, or kill it if it is too stupid to know it should not be where it is.

A while back our neighbor's dog was out. It is a young, dumb black lab mix. Our three year old daughter and her four year old friend were across the street. That dog is too stupid to know it shouldn't have been where it was, but it was just smart enough to know it should be cowed when I decided it shouldn't be out when the girls were playing. I don't trust that particular dog. It finally went back into its back yard and decided that was a safe place for it to be.

So far as I know it is not against the law to kill a dog that is a danger to you (or anyone else for that matter.) Ask Trolleygirl about a problem dog down the street from her! Alas, that dog is still alive, despite attacking one of her guests.

Come to think of it, this may be good advice for lots of problems!:~)
