I figured, it bein saturday and all, i could start a thread about the various nightclub scenes here in dallas
i will preface with a question
does anybody know of any nightclub or bar in the southern sector that plays country/southern rock?
clubs that i have been to
Blue(downtown) :nice club...crowded as hell gotta wait in line forever to get in, hip hop music, good dj, but its always overcrowded...went and saw young buck in concert there last year..had a goood time watched some good fights
Red RIver Cowboys on NW highway--really cool country and western joint
angry dog=good downtown bar nice place to go have a beer on a hot summer afternoon
rocket fiesta palace= mexican bar i have been tehre to watch a couple of semi pro boxing matches, not too bad a place
clubs im curious about:
Cozi's on camp wisdom= advertised as a mature peoples hangout(dress code, 25 to get in) i would like to go, never had the chance
clubs to avoid
bentons lounge(2nd and hatcher) when i went in there it was like one of those old movies where the music and talkin stopped when i walked in, had one beer and left, very uncofortable
Lady Love(right off bexar and 175 on haven)= its supposedly a strip club...but it is about as big as a living room and you would more likely see rims and stereos being taken off than bra's and g-strings...its a dump

I really like pubs better. Clubs are to meat markety for me. My favorites include Tiperrary Inn, Greenville Avenue Bar and Grill and Knox Street Pub.

I have been to Che's on Northwest Highway and it is pretty good.

Bars with a nice patio, though they are currently out of season. Gingerman, many differnt types of beer. TABC, great food, mixdrinks are kinda week. Fuse, Good food and good drinks. Palomino, Good food and good drinks. Iron Catus, Food sucks, Great bar on the roof, ask for Chris as your bar tender. Old monk, Burgers are very good, and good drinks. City tavern is a nice bar, no patio though. Good drinks and good service. Primos, is good for people watching and about all its good for. Dragon Fly, pretty good food and pretty good drinks. Nice patio as well. Dont snort anything you find there. Thats not a packet of sugar on the ground.

I like Iron Cactus. They have a great Sunday brunch! Definitely a great patio!

I forgot to add Louie's as a favorite. Great pizza, stiff drinks!

Worst Places to go. The metropolitan, drinks are very week, food is mediocre at best. The Grapewine, very dirty and dark, strange and small, and I dont know how long the upstairs patio is going to be standing. The Meridian Room, small, smokey and out of the way. Knox street pub, way too crowded, Christies, just a sports bar, nothing special.

Wow, Meridian Room is a favorite place of mine to go primarilty because it is somewhat out of the way and you don't get the urban hipsters in there (the uptown crowd). KSP - crowded but seems to b a popular place amongst my friends for whatever reason. Same as Corner Bar IMO. Okay, nothing special. (except for the looks of the women).. Christie's SPORTS BAR disapointed you because its just a sports bar and nothing special? Well it's got decent bar-type food and tons of TV's, so that's generally what I look for in a sports bar... Although the MAT and Frankie's in the area are popular also.

I love the Tipperary but also head to Cosmo's right across La Vista quite a bit. Pour House and bars in LW shopping center are also great (and close for me which is #1 thing)...

The best clubs are those that are either private or semi private.

Sense, Medici, Seven, Obar etc. all can be hot on the right night.

Really all depends on who is where and when.

Primo's is always good after work. Blue Goose is always fun on sunny Sunday afternoons.

I love the Grapevine!

Always wonder how long the upstair patio will remain standing. Place is very dark and dirty. It claims to be a mixed crowd. Which is a nice way or saying gay crowd.

^ Considering most of the bars in that area are gay I think its a nice way of saying there is a straight crowd.

Yep! I've never seen many gays there at all.

Grapevine is one of my favortie places too. There is definitely a gay presence, it's just not the really queeny gays. I definitely agree that's kind of a hole in the wall, but that's what makes it great. Sometimes you want fast food and sometimes you want a 5 star meal.

As for my other favs in Dallas...
- Grapevine
- Minc
- The Quarter
- Lee Harvey's
- Tei Tei
- Candleroom
- TABC
- Fuse
- City Tavern

The Not so great:
- Iron Cactus
- Sapphire Room
- Not a big fan of Deep Ellum
- Not a big fan of Greenville either

Hmm, kind of wonder who here might have been at Cosmo's, The Tip or the Pour House recently!!!

I've been to Vickery Park on Henderson a couple of times recently and enjoyed it quite a bit. The owners are quite accomodating and sensitive to the neighborhood. I met them a few weeks ago at a Cochran Heights meeting (that's the area just south of Henderson -- I have a some rental houses there). The Cochran Heights meetings are always hosted by the Candleroom, which serves free food and drinks to us...

Oh ya forgot west end pub. Go there when I dont want to leave the building. Food is okay, Drinks are okay. Bit too smoky for my taste, and full over tourists. But hey when its cold or wet and I need a drink, not a bad place to go.

Loon is great also, as is Vickery Park - as someone said, unexpectedly good food there.. LWer, I've been at cosmos and tipp quite a bit lately! Probably have to have a LH / LW debate some evening over a bottle of Jameson's! hah

The Tristan Triangle bars are sometimes a good time, but they are overrun on weekends with the usual Dallas $30k millionares and/or HP hipsters driving daddy-bought cars and handing out business cards for daddy-obtained jobs. IQ levels very low, fake-boob factor very high. Not that its a bad thing........

I concur with the mention of Vickery Park. One of the owners, Matt, used to work at The Dubliner and he took a lot ideas to the Vick. And, except for the Buffalo calamari, the food is downright excellent. There's a Guidelive review on it about 2 weeks back.

Also surprised that I have not seen mention yet of my absolute favorite "non-Dallas" bar here -- The Balcony Club!!!

Balcony Club is upstairs at the Lakewood Theater next to Matt's great patio...you can also hit the Lakewood Tavern and Lakewood Bar and Grill in short staggering distance...

Balcony Club
The Balcony Club is a cozy venue where the vibe is easygoing and absent the pretentiousness that some people associate with jazz clubs.

Patrons routinely approach band members after sets to give a handshake or deliver nice words. The long, narrow interior provides a comfortable proximity between audience and performer.

Kim Ritzenthaler / DMN
Customers take in a performance by T.J. Johnson at the Balcony Club.During our visit, the music of Blue in Jazz greets visitors. The band consists of Charles Neugent on bass, T.J. Johnson on drums and guest pianist Charles Winslow Jr.

A spotlight mounted on a large oak fixture above the bar helps illuminate the band as it performs several bop-influenced jazz standards, a few pop music covers and a good dose of blues.

"Never Can Say Goodbye," the hit Jackson Five tune, is infused with the contemporary flourish of guest guitarist Dave Marcus. The Blue in Jazz rendition provides ample opportunity for each musician to improvise at a subdued pace.

Mr. Johnson, wearing a fedora and matching gray suit, anchors the band's tight approach from song to song. Like Mr. Neugent, he seems to embody the essence of a veteran jazz cat. Later in the night, he asks the crowd, "For all those who want us to play until 2, can you give me a 'Hell, yeah?' "

Both Mr. Neugent and Mr. Johnson take turns at the mike, leaving an impression of undeniable authenticity. The band is buoyed by the whistles and shouts of several patrons, and the tangible energy within the room is magnetic, with the set ending early the next morning.

Balcony Club, 1825 Abrams Road (above Lakewood Theater). Nightly from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. 214-826-8104. No cover charge; one-drink minimum.

Speaking of the Balcony Club, about 5 years ago I had an hour long talk with Al Dupre (before he passed) one night sitting on the steps leading to the balcony of the Lakewood theater. We talked about his life growing up in Dallas and how the racial tensions had really turned for the worse. He was a very knowledgeable and opinionated man and it really opened up my eyes to a lot of the goings-on in Dallas, especially from a historical perspective.

I don't think it gets updated regularly either, but its the most comprehensive starting point I have found...does anyone have any better suggestions? There used to be another, very similar, dallashappyhours.com, but that one seems to have disappeared.

I remember several years ago when I first moved back to Dallas, EVERYONE (at least of my friends) would be at the Green Room. The place was packed every weekend night. Now, dead. Nothing. Sad.

I usually sit on the end of the bar nearest the entrance or at the window so I can watch phantom pedestrians. I am most often there during the weekend early in the evening around happy hour times and then stumble home early.

^ If you see a guy towards the end of the bar that is about six feet tall, with brown hair, glasses, an aggie ring and most likely accompanied by a shorter hispanic guy thats probably me.

How is City Tavern?

I really like City Tavern. It has a decent food, a good atmosphere and nice staff. It feels very much like a neighborhood bar. A lot of the folks that go there are Manor Hourse residents or former ones like myself.

You may have to wait until Jack Flack gets approval from a shorter hispanic guy. Like, I dont know or anything, I'm just saying....

Anyway, is there anything in the old Starck Club space? I wonder if Mr. Starck will put Dallas back on the International Party scene and wake-up the Starck Club.
