</td> </tr> </tbody> </table> Mercantile Complex Groundbreaking
On December 12, Forest City Enterprises will break ground on The Mercantile Complex, another landmark project for Downtown Dallas. The Mercantile Complex, the entire block of buildings spanning the south side of Main Street between Ervay and St. Paul, is comprised of over 1 million square feet and has sat vacant for over a decade in the heart of Downtown Dallas.

In addition to approximately 25,000 square feet of retail, Forest City's redevelopment plans for the Mercantile Complex include 365 residential units - 210 units in the historic 31-story Mercantile Bank Tower and 155 units in a new 16-story building planned to take the place of the easternmost portion of the block where the Dallas Building, Securities Building and Annex Building now stand. The City of Dallas has subsidized $70.5 million of the estimated total $250 million project which also includes future development of the Continental Building on Commerce Street and the Atmos Energy Buildings.

Mosaic Towers Groundbreaking
Though the official date has not been released, developer Hamilton Properties plans to hold a groundbreaking ceremony for Mosaic Towers, formerly known as the Fidelity Union Building, sometime in mid-December. Mosaic Towers will add another 440 residential units to Downtown Dallas, and approximately 20,000 square feet of retail.

ART AT THE MERCANTILE

A couple of you FrontBurnervians have expressed concern about the art at the Mercantile. As has been reported (http://www.wfaa.com/sharedcontent/dws/wfaa/latestnews/stories/wfaa051204_mo_merc.3c59d630.html), the redevelopment of the downtown bank is threatening some of the mosaics, fixtures, and murals in the building. Me? I believe Forest City when they say they'll save what they can. The rest might just have to be a sacrifice to the gods of downtown revitalization.

This really grates on my nerves and I don't know why.

Well, at this point, no one gets to see them anyway. I'd rather see a few saved and displayed for future appreciation, as opposed to all of them remaining boarded up and locked away from society.
