I love lists. I thought it might be fun to compile random lists about Dallas. For example:
- largest hotels
- largest shopping malls
- oldest high schools
- largers suburbs
- busiest highways
- most popular destinations

I know the DBJ does something like this ... can we?

The DBJ lists are based on actual numbers, so the same lists by someone else would have the same info.

For population info, see: http://www.nctcog.org/ris/population/index.html

I will try oldest high schools (this is an educated guess, except for you know which one):

Dallas High School (Crozier Tech) current shell of a building 1905
Adamson (former Oak Cliff High) 1917
Madison (former Forest Ave) 1921
Booker T. Washington 1922
Sunset 1925
North Dallas 1926
Woodrow 1928

I don't think any more high schools (except for Lincoln ) were built after the Depression until the very late 1940s or early 50s when Kimball and Thomas Jefferson opened. Then Samuell and Bryan Adams were built in '56 and '59...Oh yes and I guess Hillcrest fits in there somewhere, but as I understand, it was originally a county school in Vickery.

I think I have the order correct, but I bet Clipper can supply the dates...

I don't want to spend $50 on the book ... thought we might know some info to compile.

I like seeing North Park on top.

I did not realize NorthPark was that big ... or than Hulen was that small. Isn't that the premier mall in Fort Worth? Okay, I'm not a shopping guy, but what are the "best" malls ... cool stores, etc?

Just wondering, why wouldn't Southwest Center Mall be on that list? I was there this weekend, so I know it's not closed.
(Anchor stores: Dillards, Foleys, Sears, Burlington Coat Factory)

That's a good question! Where's the love for Red Bird?

I'm a bit surprised to see that The Parks is bigger than Stonebriar Center. I've only been to Stonebriar once, but I remember thinking it was quite large.

I wonder if Stone Briar is just the mall or all the retail around 121/preston

I had read somewhere that Stonebriar was the largest mall in the area ... but I am not one to question the DBJ.

I would have thought Grapevine Mills would be the largest Mall in DFW

This is the mall only, owned by General Growth Partners. The adjacent giant strip mall to the north is #16 on the list, owned by New Plan Excel Realty Trust, Inc.

Look closer, they are tied for # 5. They are owned by the same people, General Growth Partners. Note that this list is leasable space. It doesn't count the atrium areas.

I think it seems big because it is all on one floor.

Good question. Someone should contact the DBJ.

Good point...didn't catch that! Perhaps Stonebriar actually is bigger, when you add in all the atrium space. But then Parks now has that skating rink....oh well. Just my general impressions anyway, I doubt it will keep me up at night!

The scale of these malls in China is out of this world.

Golden Resources Shopping Mall
Beijing, China

The art-deco Golden Resources Mall, located near the Fourth Ring Road on Beijing's west side, opened to great international fanfare October 24, 2004. At 560,000 square meters (6-million square feet) of total floor space, it is the largest of an estimated 400 shopping malls recently opened across China. It is also the largest mall in the world currently open.
Shopping malls under construction in Wenzhou and Qingdao, China, with projected total areas of 930,000 square meters (10-million square feet) each, will be significantly larger than Golden Resources when completed

Renner School is the oldest, if we are talking structures. Next is probably the old broken down wooden schoolhouse in Frisco that was built in 1900. Addison still has an old schoolhouse too around the same age. Frankford still has it's schoolhouse intact built I believe in the early 1880's.

There was a little red school house on the Channel 13 property on Harry Hines up until a few years ago, I have no idea what happened to it. It was built late 1800's.

Dallas High is old as dirt but non-functional.

Just wondering, does White Rock Lake and the Trinity River Greenbelt skew the population density of Dallas more than the parks and greenspace of the other 10 biggest municipalities?

Over the next decade, central Dallas will be treated to a new urbanist population concentration, but I dont think anyone has an accurate guage for the prefered population density. Certainly the configuration of DART rail combined with the greenspace of the TRP, central Dallas will accommodate extremely high population density.

If I remember correctly (and I may not) The Mansion has Texas' only 5-star restaurant until a year or two ago when it lost a star. Or was it the hotel itself and not the restaurant? I forget.
