Woodrow Wilson High parents want more families to choose Dallas ISD
Push for private school families to think public moves to earlier grades
11:42 PM CDT on Friday, April 4, 2008
By KENT FISCHER / The Dallas Morning News
kfischer@dallasnews.com
The "Choose Woodrow" signs began sprouting on lawns in the neighborhoods near Woodrow Wilson High School in Old East Dallas late this winter. About the same time, "Choose Public" placards began popping up around Hillcrest and W.T. White high schools.
In February, parents from the Junius Heights, Swiss Avenue and Munger Place historical districts appealed to Dallas school trustees to expand their neighborhood elementary school through grade 5, which they said was critical to the revitalization of their slice of the city.
While low-key and isolated, recent efforts by middle- and upper-middle-income parents show a burst of advocacy for the Dallas Independent School District in neighborhoods where many families have long sent children to private schools.
"We want to develop community support for the Woodrow feeder pattern," said Woodrow Wilson High parent Susan Schuerger. "If more people like us chose public schools, the schools would be stronger and the district would be stronger."
Campaigns not new
The district and some parent groups have led campaigns to keep affluent families in DISD for years. Other examples include recruitment efforts at Preston Hollow Elementary and the district's highly regarded magnet schools, which were created to appeal to those who had the means to leave the district.
The most recent parent-led efforts, though, appear to be grass-roots efforts. They come as the district is struggling to raise standards and shake off a reputation of dysfunction and mediocrity.
The Choose Woodrow campaign, with its smart red and white yard signs, appears to be the most visible of the recent campaigns, but whether it can help increase the number of white students remains to be seen.
But in many ways, that's not the point, said Woodrow parent Bobbi Willhite, who thought up the Choose Woodrow yard sign campaign while planning the PTA's open house.
"When we chose Woodrow, it was important to us that other parents are behind the school," Mrs. Willhite said. "We want kids who start at Lee or Lakewood [elementaries] to stay in this neighborhood. We don't want them to leave for a private school."

Rod Dreher is self-righteously raging against the machine again, as only he can. This time it's Woodrow getting his panties in a knot.
'Choose Woodrow,' if you're white
"Choose Woodrow"? Sure, if you like, and more power to you. But let's not kid ourselves about what the campaign to persuade East Dallas parents to put their kids in DISD's Woodrow Wilson High School is really saying. And that is: "Come on in, white people, it's really OK."

Well we have been after Rod in Junius Heights to see the light about our schools. Seems he just wants to bite. I don't think he's ever darkened the door of a public school around here so I wouldn't pay too much attention to his biased observations.
Here are a couple of parents who disagree:

Woodrow Juniors, Seniors help guide Freshmen
The first day of high school for a freshman is a major milestone, and for some it can feel like a major stumbling block. Figuring out what to wear, what to take, where to go, and all those other questions can seem overwhelming.
Fortunately, Woodrow Wilson High School has started a program this year that will help freshmen through the first days of school and their entire first year.
Kick-Off Mentoring is a program that matches freshmen with upper classmen who have volunteered to be mentors. About 70 juniors and seniors spent a day in mentoring training last spring. On Aug. 14, they met their freshman protégés for the first time during an orientation session at Woodrow.
The half-day orientation included ice-breaker games, question-and-answer sessions, and even dance moves. On the first day of school, Aug. 25, mentors will wear distinctive T-shirts as they connect with their protégés, including the ones who did not attend the orientation.
Each mentor will be assigned a small group of freshmen and they will be encouraged to connect with their protégés at least once a week. In addition, the school is working on plans for large-group events each month throughout the school year.
The program was originated by Lee Lonzo, an educator and administrator from Indiana. It has been implemented successfully in school districts throughout the Midwest. Here in Texas, Colleyville Heritage High School, which has conducted the program for four years, reports they dramatically reduced the failure rate and increased the attendance rate among freshmen.
The overall objective of the program is to help freshmen through the unique challenges of high school, setting them up for success and - most importantly - graduation.
The administrator for the mentoring program at Woodrow is Sue Kile. Other teachers and administrators working closely with the program include Keith Black, Bob Irby, Meshell Pope, Tony Whitehead, and Misty Wilson. Several other teachers will also be involved with Kick-Off Mentoring as freshman advisors.
The student mentors are led by a steering committee of seven students: Jose Delgado, Sarah Delph, Elida Esparza, Gary Hynds, Eric Reyes, Bryce Romney, and Jonathan Sharpless.
The program's rallying cry for the mentors is "Failure is not an option for my freshmen!"
With that attitude and the support of the Kick-Off Mentoring program, the Woodrow Class of 2012 will take a flying leap over any stumbling blocks.
Emily Martin is the president of the Woodrow Wilson High School PTA.

Woodrow Fall Play to Explore Atomic Bomb
Posted October 2, 2008, 2:00 p.m. Staff Report
http://www.lakewood-now.net/view/article/4865
The Woodrow Wilson High School drama department brings "Radiance of a Thousand Suns" to the auditorium stage as this year's fall play. The play follows three stories to emerge from the aftermath of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima toward the end of World War II.
The curtain rises at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 10-11 and 13, and tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for students.
Theater teacher John Beaird brings a personal perspective to the production. He participated last summer in the Japan Fulbright Memorial program, which helped rebuild Japan after the war.
The play, written by Anne McGravie in 1995 to mark the 50th anniversary of the bombing, focuses on the lifework of an American physicist, from graduate school, to work with Dr. Robert Oppenheimer on the Manhattan Project, through his post-war visit to Hiroshima to see the devastating effects of his work; a childhood friendship between Scottish and Japanese pen-pals who, as women, unite long after the war; and a Japanese Methodist minister who devotes his life to helping Hiroshima survivors, Hibakusha, who were outcasts in their own society.
The play is rated PG-13 because of graphic descriptions of personal injuries and the destruction of Hiroshima.

Before Chesley Sullenberger, There Was Woodrow Wilson High School Grad Al Haynes
By Robert Wilonsky in News You Can Actually Use, ActuallyFriday, Feb. 6 2009 @ 12:02PM
A Friend of Unfair Park mighty proud of his Woodrow Wilson High School roots sends word that last night's Nightline featured two Texas-born aviation heroes: Denison's Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, but of course, and Dallas native and Woodrow grad Al Haynes. Haynes is an "aviation legend" who was among those whose heroics helped limit the loss of life aboard United Airlines Flight 232, which broke up during an emergency landing at Sioux City Airport in 1989. Indeed, as the ABC piece reminds, Haynes was portrayed by none other than Charlton Heston in the 1992 made-for-TV movie A Thousand Heroes. Haynes and Sullenberger have spoken since the latter became "The Hero Of Flight 1549."

Re: "Are We Still Accountable? School proposal carries risks for Texas students," Sunday Editorials.
The Dallas Morning News is correct to be concerned about new state accountability plans putting too many young Texans on a low trajectory pursuing the Standard Diploma versus the more challenging Texas Diploma.
East Dallas community leaders and Woodrow Wilson High School alumni are addressing this issue now by working with Principal Ruth Vail on the creation of the challenging International Baccalaureate program for the high school. We all must aim high if our young people are to be prepared for college and post-graduate study.

Since I live in the feeder area, I want nothing but good stories to come out of WWHS. Its a shame that some students (and administrators, it sounds like) couldn't care less. Someone needs to open some whoop ass. A story straight from the pen of a WW substitute teacher.
http://frontburner.dmagazine.com/2009/04/08/letter-from-woodrow-high-you-call-this-a-gem/
An excerpt:
After a lengthy wait in the office, I was released to the classroom. It turns out the teacher had retired months before and administrators decided not to hire a full-time teacher. Only substitutes had been used. They are much cheaper. The kids were rude and out of control, angry that I expected them to participate in a lesson that I happened to bring with me. Most were texting and/or listening to iPods; the rest were yelling at each other. Worse than that was the classroom itself: totally savaged, filthy, trash thrown everywhere, drawers and cabinets broken open with junk falling out. Water snaked across the floor from a broken water fountain. The ceiling was partially caved in from long-time roof leaks. There were no books, no materials, just some paper.

It turns out that it was a retired teacher from our old rival, Hillcrest - she was there for one day and didn't follow the rules..apparently it was only to try to torpedo our reputation. I think it was irresponsible of D to publish those anonymous criticisms. Not saying there are not some kids who are tough to handle - but it was an art class, which formerly had a long-tenured teacher who was respected by those kids. I've added my usual bombastic response to the blog!
We currently have 300-400 transfers in from outside our attendance zone who are 'at-risk' kids who came up in other schools. Those will be gradually eliminated as the IB and high school redesign to a college preparatory school phases in over the next two years. Then the tranfers in will be mostly for IB.
Of course, we are getting grief over that as well!

It's the oldest high school in the third largest school district in the state (behind Houston and Dallas). 49 of the district's 70 campuses earned "exemplary" or "recognized" ratings in 2008. My old high school fell into the latter category. Isn't it glorious?

Once again, Woodrow has been ranked one of the top high schools in America. It is ranked at 637 out of nearly 22,000 high schools in the United States.
Woodrow's E & E (Equity and Excellence) ranking improved to 36 from 22.6. This ranks in the top half of the 100 plus schools in Texas which made the list and is more than twice the national average.
Woodrow is ahead of schools such as Keller (652), Plano East (633), Lake Highlands (707), Allen (882), Flower Mound (885), The Colony (1235) and Frisco Centennial (1425) - also ahead of IB schools such as L.D. Bell (882), Trinity (774) and Houston Lamar (838).
http://www.newsweek.com/id/201160/?s=texas&q=2009/rank/1
"The number of Advanced Placement, Intl. Baccalaureate and/or Cambridge tests taken by all students at a school in 2008 divided by the number of graduating seniors" seems like a bad way to rank schools. The students don't even have to pass the tests.

Jay Mathews (Washington Post for Newsweek) spoke about this in Dallas recently - his studies show that those who have taken AP/IB classes and exams perform better in college than those who have not - regardless of the score. The fact that a school has a large offering of AP/IB courses and a high degree of participation indicates rigor.
Our scores have improved significantly - almost 14 percent. We had 32 AP scholars this year (must score a '3' or more on three or more AP tests). This is from a class of 220 where a large percentage are also ESL, Special Ed and Economically Disadvantaged. Lakewood People last year reported that 134 had a score of '3' or higher on at least one AP test. We have about a 40% participation in AP so that gets us on the nearly every year. In 2010 (fall) we will be offering the IB Diploma Programme, which earns a graduate 24 hours of college credit.

Building on the foundation
Posted October 1, 2009, 10:39 a.m. by Bruce Felps
Adding to its pantheon of scholarships, charities, organizations, councils, and all-‘round swellness, Woodrow Wilson High School now has its own nonprofit foundation.
The Woodrow Wilson High School Community Foundation, according to the official release, will serve as a “resource for Woodrow Wilson High School, the elementary schools and middle school in the feeder pattern, and other individuals and causes that are closely connected to the Woodrow community.”
Its big task straight out of the box, and kind of the genesis for its existence, is to support the International Baccalaureate Program.
Charter board members include President Richard H. Vitale, fellow alumni D. Paul Dalton and Gary E. Griffith, community members R. Bradley Fletcher, Emily L. Martin — full disclosure, she’s one of us — and Susan R. Schuerger.
These Woodrow guys are going to take over the world one day.

Woodrow Wins 2009 College Readiness Award
From ACT:
Principal
Woodrow Wilson High School
100 S. Glasgow Dr,
Dallas, TX 75214
Dear Ms. Vail:
Congratulations! The Texas ACT Council is pleased to present you with the enclosed 2009
College Readiness Award. The award is in recognition of your school having a significant
increase in its ACT Composite score over the past five years while maintaining or increasing the
number of students taking the ACT Assessment. This resulted in greater numbers of your
students being college-ready as a result of your efforts and those of your staff and students.
Less than 5% of the high schools in Texas were able to accomplish what you have done.
Nearly 160,000 Texas students took the ACT in 2009 which was an all-time high and Texas
scores have increased substantially during the last flve years which indicates that students are
using their score results to make improvements to their college readiness levels as well as
showing that Texas students score well on the ACT - a curriculum-based achievement test that
is aligned to the Texas curriculum. These results also show that your school's faculty and stalf
are providing the kind of education that makes a positive difference for all students in preparing
them for college and the workforce.
The Texas ACT Council is comprised of secondary and postsecondary educators who advise
ACT, Inc. on the utilization of ACT programs and services in Texas schools and colleges. We
would like to join the Texas ACT Council in recognizing you on this significant achievement.
Additionally, we have included a sample press release should you wish to share this good news
with your local media or school board. If you have any questions, do not hesitate in contacting
us.
Sincerely,
Karen L, Pennell

Woodrow mock trial team advances to DISD semifinals
The four semifinalists in this year's DISD mock trial tournament were announced Tuesday night, after four rounds of trials that began on Saturday: Woodrow, Skyline, Booker T. Washington and Hillcrest. The semifinal rounds are scheduled Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Frank Crowley Courthouse on Industr...whoops, Riverfront Boulevard. The winning teams Thursday will square off Tuesday for the DISD championship. Both finalists are guaranteed a spot in the March state tournament. Last year, Woodrow didn't make it to the DISD semifinals after finishing second at the state tournament in 2008. Meanwhile, Hillcrest advanced to last year's state tournament for the first time in recent memory, finishing among the top four teams, and Skyline won last year's state tournament and finished among the top 20 teams at the national tournament.
