View Full Version : Deep Ellum funeral procession?

I had to make a run back home this morning, so I was heading through downtown around lunch time. I'd always wanted to check out the new Deep Ellum Subway (sandwich, not LRT, unfortunately). As I was leaving, I heard a police traffic-control siren. It was then that I belatedly noticed a line of cars proceeding down Elm St. with their four-way blinkers on, and a motorcycle patrolman blocking traffic on Good-Latimer so they could pass. It was a funeral procession!

Now, I've been in a Dallas funeral procession before, but it was on the clear path to one of the big cemeteries in southern Dallas. Since the pioneers' cemetery (http://freepages.history.rootsweb.com/~jwheat/dalcem.html) downtown isn't taking new arrivals, this must have been someone with a particular tie to either Deep Ellum or to Downtown Dallas. I assume the DPD doesn't provide escorts through the busiest streets in town for just anyone. So my question: who died recently that would have wanted their last ride to be through Deep Ellum and/or Downtown?

By the way, the Deep Ellum Subway is huge! They don't have provolone cheese, though... but on the plus side, they haven't broken the toaster oven (yet).

Perhaps they were on the way to Oakland Cemetery, which is further down Malcolm X (nee Oakland St.). There are a lot of big names in that old cemetery.

I have always envisioned a New Orleans Jazz funeral for myself...anyone know how to arrange that?

Wrong way, though... they were on Elm at Good-Latimer, heading into Downtown. Though I suppose they could have been coming *from* the cemetery for a service at one of the downtown churches... that would be a bit backwards, though.
