I don't know if we already have one of these going (i did a search for "Wi Fi" and nothing came up, and i've not seen anything, so if we do it's at least not very fecent), but I think it'd be a great idea to start a resource on here (make it a sticky, maybe?) that lists all the cool cafes, restaurants, etc. that offer free wi-fi (wireless internet access). There are many T-Mobile hot-spots (Borders, Starbucks, etc.), but you have to pay for those, and the best things in life should be free!

So I'll start. i'll compile them all into this first post for easy access.

THE LIST:

Kaffa Coffee in Meadow Central (Meadow Rd. @ Central Expressway), one door south of Tom Thumb. GREAT ambiance, fast connection, great drinks. highly recommended (one of my constant hangouts and favorite places to write).

Whataburger in Red Oak

Sandella's Cafe at Southlake Town Square. They advertise having free wifi service at their cafe. They are located behind The Container Store, in between the Post Office and Storehouse.

Crossroads Market (gay bookstore/coffee shop) at Cedar Springs & Throckmorton

Buli (gay coffee shop) on Cedar Springs & Reagan

Panera Bread at all locations.

if you've been to any of these, or any other cafes/whatever with free WiFi, please give us your impression.

I'm pretty sure all of DFW airport is a T-Mobile "Hot Spot". I've never fired up the ol' laptop there, so I'm not sure if it's free or not.

I think most Starbucks locations are wireless hotspots as well.

I did a quick search on google for free wireless hotspots and found this list for Texas (www.wififreespot.com/tex.html). I'm not sure how up-to-date the information is, so use at your own risk!

Geaux, all T-Mobile hotspots are pay only. And it's pretty expensive, too.

^Yeah, you have to pay to connect to T-Mobile Hotspots. They are at all FedEx Kinkos, Starbucks, and Borders Bookstores.

The following link will provide you with a listing of some free WiFi locations in Dallas-Fort Worth: http://www.auscillate.com/wireless/dfw/

As for finding more free WiFi portals, my experience has taught me that if your laptop has a wireless modem, then all you need to do is make sure your wireless modem is on, and any WiFi network that is in your in vicinity will be automatically detected by your computer. It is important, however, to be very cautious when connecting to theese free networks because many of them are not secure, thus exposing your computer to serious risk.
Hope this helps!

If/when you visit any of these free locations, please list them, directions, and your comments on them (not just the wifi, cofee, food too). I've found those lists before, but they're not as helpful in my mind as real people's thoughts and opinions on the joints

Just drive around a neighborhood for a few minutes and you'll always find some idiot with a completely open wireless network.

You could probably pick up a few credit card numbers and some tax returns while you're at it.

Well that always takes me back, back to the days of MobileStar (http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=mobilestar), back before...well, it's a long story. Let's just say it was very personal. Those were better days.

Thanks for sparing us the story.

A pringles can can aid in picking up on those home wireless networks also. I can thank local Chicago news for pointing that out and showing exactly how to do it...

Add one more to the list: Sandella's Cafe at Southlake Town Square. They advertise having free wifi service at their cafe. They are located behind The Container Store, in between the Post Office and Storehouse.

Southlake OKs 6 Wi-Fi spots

By Sarah Bahari
Star-Telegram Staff Writer

SOUTHLAKE - Wireless Internet access is on its way.

The City Council unanimously approved a contract Tuesday night with Redmoon Broadband to provide six Wi-Fi hot spots throughout the city.

Southlake will pay the Plano company $72,846.20 for hot spots at Town Square, Bicentennial Park, Bob Jones Park, Southlake Sports Complex, the east Department of Public Safety facility and the Public Works Department building.

Town Square will be integrated first and should be ready within a couple of weeks, said Gary Gregg, the city's technical services manager. Other sites should be ready by the end of October.

This is part of a pilot program that could eventually extend to other parts of the city. For now, public access will be limited to 30-minute sessions.

Wireless networks allow computer users to log on to the Internet without plugging in a phone or Ethernet line. Most new laptops come with the technology to connect to Wi-Fi networks.

I know some of the Cafe Brazil's (http://cafebrazil.com/) have free wi-fi. But the one I work at in Mckinney doesn't.

In my office, using Netstumbler(wifi sniffer program) I can get over 30 networks that are open. Only 3 I know of are actually free wifi spots setup for anyone to use. The other 27 or so are companies who do not have basic encryption on their networks. Pretty scary, since many are law firms.

I haven't used it yet, but I think the new coffeeshop on Lower Greenville, Gachet, has free wi-fi. Great place, too.
