This is pretty cool, especially for a mapgeek like me. At first, I thought it was one of many April Fools articles on Slashdot (http://slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/04/01/0337245&tid=217&tid=162), but it seems to be real: Google Labs has a beta product called "Ride Finder". Cab companies and other transportation providers feed Google their vehicles' positions, and Google plots them on their already-excellent Google Maps. The result is a map that shows where all the vehicles in the fleet are currently located!

Try the Dallas map (http://labs.google.com/ridefinder?z=8&near=Dallas%2C%20TX&src=1). You can tell that it's an accurate listing of the SuperShuttle locations by the way most of the vans are deployed in North Dallas, but several are currently lined up along International Parkway. In fact, when I zoom in, I can see which terminals they're currently serving.

Even more interesting is the Chicago (http://labs.google.com/ridefinder?z=8&near=Chicago%2C%20IL&src=1) map, which shows the locations of the cabs of three competing cab companies. You can zoom in on, say, The Loop, and hit the "Update Vehicle Positions" button occasionally to watch the traffic. Or zoom out and wonder how much it cost that guy to take a cab to DeKalb, almost halfway to Iowa. It looks like the cab listings are updated to reflect cabs that are actually available.

Wow, just what I needed, another way to waste my time while studying.

If I get one of those barcode ID things for my cat, could I track him?

The barcode won't help unless you install scratchproof readers in all his favorite places. Start with the litterbox and the (remains of the) arm of the sofa.

You'd be better off to implant a GPS device and a cell phone. Then, you might contact Google and tell them you have the perfect new project for next April 1.

(Note that while Ride Finder is real, announced on 3/31, the new Google Gulp (http://www.google.com/googlegulp/) was announced today and therefore may be somewhat suspect.)

I guess I thought those were GPS enabled.

That GoogleGulp is funny.

That's beautiful, it's like poetry.

Why the heck am I still here?

Right now, I'm looking at the Chicago map, and one of Flash Cab's units is currently located... in the middle of Lake Michigan. Either the GPS unit is broke, or someone's swimming with the fishes.

(Or they could be on a ferry boat, but that would just be crazy talk.)

On the subject of April Fools, last year, I happened to go to Howstuffworks.com (http://www.howstuffworks.com) (not realizing it was 04.01) and they had an article about nuclear powered cars -- they said the cars had littlle 'nuclear-beads' in the middle of what looked like a bladder in the engine that heated water that steamed and turned a turbine. You could even plug your house into it at night because the energy was so abundant. Needless to say, I believed it.. and probably told fifty people in the coming hours of idiocy. Then I saw the little note at the bottom of the last page.. 'ha, just kidding.' arg. the same day i was convinced that one of my friends had committed suicide (not a funny joke). Hm. this reminds me of the 'LOL!' thread.
