The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra unveiled the design for its future home today. The monumental white sculpture capped by a soaring arch was designed by acclaimed architect Santiago Calatrava. It sits on a 3.8 acre site at 14th and Peachtree ,adjacent to the under construction Symphony Tower. The building will cost an estimated $300 million.

14th and Peachtree

Midtown Atlanta: The new downtown. There's at least three highrise (20-30 stories) residential projects within a few blocks of this intersection under construction right now - right on the heals of three/four recently completed highrise residential projects. Additionally, something like five office towers have been built/are being built in that area. The quickly progressing Atlantic Station development is within a mile. Lots of business-looking foot traffic during the day, and even more bar-hopping and dining foot traffic at night; Subway stops at 10th and 17th street; 200+ acre Piedmont Park one block east of Peachtree; this is quite the place to be. Located basically midway between downtown and Buckhead, '14th and Peachtree' is setting the standard in the unofficial competition between like-sized metro areas as a great urban neighborhood.

haha, I know, reminds me of a quote (dont remember from whom, or when?!?!) from a noted Dallas editorialist regarding the Calatrava bridges coming to Dallas. Something like: "It's like buying a mass produced design from Wal-Mart."

It looks like maybe Atlanta said "Build a place that looks like the opera-house you designed for Tenerife in the Canary Islands." I like it, looks fun and swoopy and soaring. Of course, I'm assuming there is an auditorium in there somewhere.

It looks like a helmet from Battlestar Gallactica.

I Agree. After seeing that, makes me second guess my own support of his trinity river bridges.

I think Frank Gehry is also slipping into self-parody.

Just because you CAN build something, doesn't mean you should.

I like it. I like it more than the Wyly. Wait, what will the Wyly look like? Definitelye better than the cube.

I really like it. Almost as much as that one spectacular above ground subway entrace he designed in, what was it, France I think?

I love it. It's beautiful and ingenius, except for the blocks and overhang on the left side.

EDIT: Oh. according to the night-ish shot, its not an overhang like it appears to be in the second shot. Full steam ahead, then ;)

Here is a sample thereof.

That does appear impressive, and doesn't really look as much like most of his work.

Odd that it should be Tenerife, we actually have people go there on summer missions, never would have known anything about that place otherwise.

The moment I saw it, I thought, "Oh look, it's Tenerife with F-18 tailfins!"

Was it Alfred Hitchcock who said that self-plagiarism is Style?

I love Calatrava, but I can't help it the more and more I think about it the more and more it angers me. This really upsets me. Does he take us all for damned idiots? This is absolutely ridiculous. It is the son of the Canary Island opera house and the Miliwaukee Art Museum. Absolutely a slap in the face. If I was an Atlantan involved with this I would be furious and reject it outright.

Understand I am not against the building itself, I think it is beautiful... if it weren't a mix of two already famous buildings designed by the same architect. Seriously that would be like some jackass planning to build a new tallest skyscraper in America with 3/4 of the Sears tower on bottom and crowning it with the Empire State Building's crown. Absolutely disgusting. This has seriously got to be a joke. I must be dreaming.

Same goes for Gerhy and his carbon copy Disney Hall... no thanks. I could care less if we get that guy to desing our Museum of Science and Energy. If he does I pray he doesn't do the stupid ass titanium blinder crap. If he does maybe we can say we are keeping up with the Joneses.

This makes me all the more emensely proud of the Foster design for the Winspear. It is truly one of a kind. A singular icon of Dallas not found anywhere else on this planet. Also, at first I was kinda apprehensive of Koolhaas' Wyly design but now I LOVE IT. You will not find anything like it in the WORLD. One of a kind. Bold. Dallas. Gives me hope that Dallas has still got it. We aren't following anybody, we're setting the pace. Why keep up with the Joneses... We're Dallas. Ha!

Oh My. This thing scares me. Seriously. It moves?!

I don't think buildings are supposed to do that....

And, by the way, I don't think Mozart would approve of something like this. I just...this building, to me, does not say "let's go hear the classics played by a great orchestra." Certainly, our greatest musical minds pushed the envelope--that's what made them great. But they did it for a reason, with a purpose...not just because they could put wings on a building. *shudder*

But maybe I just don't get it. Maybe in the future all great buildings will have wings and other movable parts? Is this the direction architecture is heading? I certainly don't know much about it, I admit my ignorance on the subject.

I went to the Milwaukee Art Museum about a year ago and thought is was great. We stayed to watch the wings open and close at noon. It was unique and beautiful place. Now I see this thing in Atlanta and have to wonder. One of these things is enough.
