GRAPEVINE - Goodbye, silver screens. Hello, silverware.

Plans for The Towers of Grapevine call for transforming an old Movies 8 theater into an upscale restaurant and retail center. The $5.5 million project near William D. Tate Avenue and Texas 114 joins P.F. Chang's China Bistro, Romano's Macaroni Grill and other eateries along Grapevine's popular restaurant row.

Developer John T. Evans, president of John T. Evans Co. of Dallas, promises high-end restaurants. He is working on securing tenants but declined to release names.

"Grapevine has one of the most accessible restaurant clusters in the whole Dallas-Fort Worth area, but it is lacking in some upscale restaurants," Evans said. "They have P.F. Chang's and the Silver Fox, which are upper-end casual, but there is a need for high-end restaurants."

Renovations on the 4.5-acre site will include extensive parking lot landscaping, a new storefront and several waterfalls. Up to four restaurants plus small retail stores are expected. Work should take about six months.

The southwest corner of the theater building, closed since 2000, will be lopped, making the building L-shaped with four towers. The move drops the building's square footage to about 20,000 from 27,500.

"We wanted to set this project apart as being something unique and upscale," said Phil Morley, a studio partner with Dallas-based BGO Architect.

What more do they want!?

If they're smart, they will find a way to get a downtown marina scene going along part of the lake near the Gaylord Texan.
