748.1414 - Do you remember what this local pop-culture phenomenon of a telephone number was for? A catchy & memorable tune ensued when pronouncing each number - millions couldn't help but take notice. It was commonplace for local citizens to take part in hundreds of singing challenges for the advertisement. Results (total votes = 13):

This is actually a quiz, so if you want to wait for the answer - it'll be out at the end of the month.

Send eMail my way, if you're unsure of whether or not you nailed it! Most will 'know.'

Man, if I only had a recording of this one. I totally forgot about it! I kinda miss it actually, even though I personally coulda cared less about what was 'promoted'...

Then, of course, there was:

"Hey Mr. Greenfield, whatca got for me?
I here you offer, real economy.
Need a desk, a chair and a lamp that's bright
Plus a few more things to make my office right.
Hey Mr. Greenfield, save my dough for me."

Amazing that I still remember the words. When I was a kid in the 1970s, my mother would always play KRLD's morning news program [except for my very early elementary school years when we would listen to Rod Roddy on the old WRR-AM] while we were getting ready for school. That commercial ran for most of the entire length of my education from elementary through high school. We never had to look at a clock to know whether or not we were running late - most of the regular commercials and all of the regular program features ran at the exact same time everyday. If memory serves me correct, the Mr. Greenfield spot ran around 7:30 or so - either before or after Paul Harvey, who, in those days, was on KRLD.

There are others that I remember. "Weekends were made for Michelobe" ran when I was in 7th grade. At some point, Benny Goodman did commercials for Geico insurance, which had a jingle based on "Jersey Bounce," a song he popularized in the 1940s. Another one was for Toyota of Dallas: "Mr Toyota, the new man in town." I remember I suddenly felt old not long ago when I heard a commercial announcing the dealership's anniversary and just how many years it had been since they were the "new man in town."

Another radio jingle from a later period was "Newstalk 57 - WFAA!"

Looking back, listening to the news on every morning was very educational. I had a much better understanding of and interest in the world and current affairs than most of the other kids in school. I don't know whether that was my mother's intention - or if it was just the result of her wanting to hear the news.

How about:

"I got a ranch in downtown Dallas/
I buy diamonds by the ton/
Chase cuties in my Cadillac/
And drill oil wells just for fun...

And then the all-time greatest DFW ad jingle EVER...

"_________/
South on 35/
Alsbury Exit/
Fort Worth. (Open Sundays)"

(I honestly think this second one is one of the greatest ad campaigns anywhere ever. Being from central Dallas I have never been to this company nor do I know anyone who has. Yet you can ask absolutely everyone I know who's lived in Dallas for more than a few years and they can tell you how to get to the location of the company responsible for the second ad I listed.)

I definitely miss a lot of those old ads and others! Good information all.

Like most already got, The Dallas Times Herald was the correct answer to the poll. I miss having that second newspaper option, as well.
