There are plans to build a new ballpark on the campus of UNT that would be home to a UNT baseball team AND a Texas Collegiate League baseball team.

Sweet this would be awesome! I'm a Texas Ex. But I've always had a soft spot for UNT. Maybe cause they're the only real public university in the DFW area. By real I mean having the entire college life... sports, local bars, etc... I think this would be freakin' sweet.

I believe UNT and Denton itself has SOO much untapped potential it's ridiculous. I think student housing is probably the most important issue. Although most high school seniors think dorm life sucks it is actually some of the best days you will have in your college life. It is a critical part of creating community at a school and a sense of belonging and pride, besides the fact that you meet so many new people.

If it were up to me I would have every student live on campus their freshman and sophmore years and then make a Denton residence mandatory for juniors and seniors. With exemptions of course.

The main reason that community is so important in a university is that it creates a dedicated alumni base. Alumni are the ones with money and those that can actually cause signifigant change.

It makes the university a rallying point. Football weekends become less about the game itself and more of a reunion of sorts. This I believe is the key to creating a overall great state school. We don't have to have the Harvard of North Texas, just be the best that we can be.

Blog entry quotes Rick Villarreal about the "end of the rainbow" future football stadium and mentions breifly about the ill-forgotten UNT baseball team/stadium.

The rest of the article can be found here (http://startelegramsports.typepad.com/fbc/2008/07/unt-dodge-geari.html)

5. Last but never least is stadium talk. Villarreal and company are still shooting for a 2010 groundbreaking. The design process continues with UNT's architect, but enough particulars are nailed down that a firm in Colorado has been contracted to market a stadium to potential naming-rights sponsors. Essentially, the firm is "recruiting" companies in -- let's imagine -- the soft-drink, telecomm/technology, energy, food, financial, large retail or other regional industries with the lure of potential exposure (or "hits" as the marketing types call it) of splashing one's name all over scoreboards, concourses, a stadium's exterior, field- or club-level ads, a press box or wherever. Villarreal also said that until a football stadium rises up on the old UNT golf course south of I-35W/I-35E, baseball is on hold.
This is good news considering the 2010 date is near & if companies are being contacted, the ball could finally be rolling. Considering the baseball stadium was to be shared with the former TCL Denton Outlaws it seems UNT may never see a baseball stadium...
