View Full Version : rail effect on air travel

I am curious as to how long it would take to travel btwn DFW and Love using the proposed rail transit. I am sure connecting flights in DFW is tough enough at times, but perhaps when flights are booked or unavailable, another option (not sure how viable) would be to take the rail to the other airport to connect. kind of risky, but if the flights had a long layover, then this would be like an extended trip on tram btwn terminals at DFW. This could also be an alternative with inclement weather (although I guess the airports are close enough that both would probably be affected), equipment malfunction, etc.

Many times flights are cheaper with Southwest and remember not being able to fly from Love to Chicago Midway or other cities b/c of a "Wright Amendment." Someone said that was something DFW required of Love to protect themselves. Anybody know much about this Wright Amendment? If someone flew to Love using Love and then took the rail to DFW, they could then connect with DFW to fly to their destination. Yeah, I guess they might as well fly to another airport w/ the desired connections but during busy times like Thanksgiving, alternatives are sometimes all that are left.

One last question: I heard on the local news a few nights ago that DFW is the 3rd busiest airport in the world and the busiest in the US. Is this correct? I always had heard Atlanta Hartsfield and Chicago O'Hare were the busiest in the US. What caused the change?

thanks,
ak

I wish American Eagle moved operations from DFW to Love Field.

I did not hear that, but it probably depends on what the measure is i.e. passenger miles, passengers, # of flights, etc, etc

If only legend airlines were still around. I fly from Love to Chicago one time on a reconfigured Fokker 100 when American was competing with Legend, excellent service and Love is so much more convenient to get in and out of than DFW.

As far as service adding American Eagle and mainly Commuter jets would make sense as a lot of people in the smaller communities American Eagle serves want to go to Dallas for a business trip (Anyone else see rail as a viable alternative here), but not all of the operations could or should move. You have to consider the desire for connecting flights which Love Field is unable legally to offer. Does Love Field have the capacity for that many more flights with the tearing down of a concourse and agreements to limit flights out of there?

As DFW becomes more congested I'd love to see Love and even Meacham in Fort Worth have more commuter flights. For curiosity is Meacham required to follow the Wright Amendment or is only Love Field restricted.

Oh man, my dad absolutely loved Legend. I miss it too.

Thanks. That was what I needed to read.

This is correct. Usually Atlanta is number one and Chicago O'Hare is #2 and DFW is #3. (DFW was #2 a couple of times before 9/11)

This may change next year as things are starting to pick up. United (O'Hare based) is having problems while American is doing well (DFW based). AA planning to move TWA routes to DFW. Also, terminal D should add more traffic.
