A decent image of the memorial which doesn't quite give it the full justice deserved - given the context further below and that badge numbers are cut into the structure's top so that sunlight emblazons them on the sidewalk below:

Award of Excellence - Steel Project
Dallas Police Memorial

Since the inception of the Dallas Police Department in 1891, more than 70 officers have died in the line of duty. When the city of Dallas and the Dallas Police Foundation wanted to honor them, they commissioned a unique memorial, which was erected on the plaza of City Hall.

The unique design of the memorial features a 93-ft. upper canopy, which memorializes the fallen officers by their badge numbers, which were cut through the stainless steel plate. When the sun shines down upon the canopy, it casts the shadow of each badge number onto the lower portion of the memorial and, as the sun moves across the sky throughout the day, onto the surrounding plaza below.

Project fabricator Big D Metalworks overcame several obstacles in construction including: difficulty finding the highest quality of material, countless hours and over of 77,000 lbs. of bead blast material to gain the required finish and difficulty in getting materials and tools delivered the congested downtown area where the memorial was being erected.

The lower section of the memorial is encased in 20,000 lbs. of stainless steel and has engraved in it each officer's name, badge number, date of death and age at the time he or she died. Appropriately, the plaza surface also contains sections of the actual streets where the officers fell.
