When two Dallas-Fort Worth hospital systems teamed up to build a $100 million hospital, the real winner was the Denton community, which will soon be home to Presbyterian Hospital of Denton.

Plano-based Triad Hospitals Inc. and Arlington-based Texas Health Resources broke ground last fall on the 300-bed project on Interstate 35. Initially, the Denton hospital is expected to add more than 160 beds when it opens in February or March 2005.

Future construction will include a walkway connecting the new hospital to a renovated Denton Community Hospital. That hospital, now owned by Triad, eventually will become part of Presbyterian Denton.

The hospital's service area includes more than 250,000 people in Denton, Little Elm, Gainesville and southern Oklahoma.

City population statistics show the number of residents is expected to exceed 180,000 by 2015.
