In Kaldi Café’s old spot in the Heights, Shade Café offers a stylish modern minimalist feel that really stands out. Despite its upscale menu and surroundings, the place is casual-friendly. Prices are midrange ($11.50–$25.50) but the value is high for those looking to satisfy sophisticated palates. The menu offers savory fascinations like mushroom phyllo strudel, roasted couscous stuffed tomato, and pecan-crusted confit of duck leg. Pop in for coffee and dessert. The strong cappuccino goes well with the chocolate cherry croissant bread pudding and dollop of vanilla bean ice cream.

Shade is an exciting new full-service restaurant owned by Heights residents, Claire Smith and Russell Murrell, who along with Chef Jeb Stuart are committed to meeting the demand for quality dining in our community. We are excited to bring you a selection of sensibly crafted dishes in an atmosphere of attentive and hospitable service. Shade serves lunch and dinner every day of the week except Mondays and brunch on Saturday and Sunday. The seasonal menu is creative, fresh, and affordable. The décor is contemporary, yet inviting, with a fabulous dining room and cozy outdoor seating. Our goal at Shade is to provide a comfortable establishment where customers consider themselves “regulars”. With your support, we hope that Shade will become a new dining destination for friends and neighbors as well as an attraction for new visitors to the Heights.

We are happy to announce that Shade Club has been granted the right to hold a Private Club Permit and will begin serving alcoholic beverages to members sometime in April. To become a Shade Club member, simply download the application form, fill it out, sign it and send it to Shade Club Corporation, 250 W. 19th Street, Houston, Texas 77009, or drop it by Shade the next time you are in for a meal. We will process your application and give you a membership number. Your membership information will be on file at Shade and you will be asked to provide your name for verification as a member when you come in and order a drink.

Questions often asked about the Private Club Permit:

What is Shade Club?
Shade Club is a non-profit organization made up of a group of people who have come together and organized a private club to be served an alcoholic beverage on the premises of Shade while they dine.

How much is a membership to join Shade Club?
There will be no charge for a membership to join Shade Club.

Will Shade Club be serving just wine and beer, or will it also be serving mixed drinks?
Shade Club will provide its members mixed drinks and beer along with a well thought out, value-driven wine list.

Can I still bring in alcohol to Shade after the Shade Club has received its permit to serve alcoholic beverages?
No. Because Shade Club will serving mixed drinks along with wine and beer, you will not be allowed to bring in any alcohol that has not been purchased by Shade Club through a licensed distributor of the State of Texas. This is state law and is applicable to any business that sells or provides mixed drinks.

Is there an expiration date for my membership to Shade Club?
No.
