BUSINESS DAY

The Greater Dallas Planning Council is honoring several projects and individuals for their contributions to Dallas-area urban design and is giving its Kessler Award to all-purpose civic leader/business executive Walter Human for his work in transportation and planning.

The urban design award program was created 10 years ago by the city of Dallas and adopted this year by the Greater Dallas Planning Council, which expanded it beyond the city of Dallas.

Awards were presented by council president Darrell Jordan and Awards Committee chairman Leif Sandberg.

In the Built Project category, awards went to Mockingbird Station, Addison Circle and downtown Plano.

In the Dream/Study category, the winners are the M Streets Conservation District Initiative, Dallas Preservation Incentives Program and the Six Cities Trail Plan.

Awards Committee members included Dennis Stacy, Mary Ellen Degnan, Dennis Wilson, Charyl McAfee- Duncan, Patsy Stephenson, Nestor Infanzon , and Marcel Quimby. The committee's had comments about the winners:

• The M Streets Conservation District – "A neighborhood unites to determine its future, with help of a special set of city codes."

• Six Cities Trail Plan – "The cities of Allen, Frisco, Garland, McKinney, Plano and Richardson take the first steps in the creation of a trail system that could run uninterrupted through their communities."

• Preservation Incentives Program – "A model program that will protect Dallas' remaining historic buildings and promote the revitalization of the city's center."

• Addison Circle – "A sense of place is created from scratch – a central open space to create community."

• Mockingbird Station – "An imaginative combination of old and new – a group of undistinguished buildings become lively and interesting."

• Downtown Plano – "Brings new vitality to the east side of the city. New construction complements historic buildings without imitating them."

• Walter Humann – Dallas looks better, functions better and feels more like a great city because Walter Humann lives and works here."

Mr. Humann, president and chief executive officer of Bon Terre-B Ltd ., a partnership with the Ray Hunt family, was recognized for leading the Central Expressway Task Force and for his efforts that led to the creation of Dallas Area Rapid Transit.

Well, just you wait; Galatyn Park will one day be in there, too!

I hope.
