Fort Worth ranks No. 2 for beautiful women

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder -- and in Fort Worth, there's a lot of beauty to behold.
When it comes to per capita female pulchritude -- that's academic-speak for how many hotties you can expect to find at your local bar -- Fort Worth ranks No. 2 in the nation, says Men's Health magazine. Ranking fourth, Dallas is barely in Fort Worth's rear-view mirror.
Men's Health, which compiled the list as part of a "Best and Worst Cities for Men" survey in its November issue, arrived at these vital statistics through an unusual methodology: It compiled the names of Playboy Playmates of the Year and winners of the Miss America and Miss USA contests, over the past 23 years. From the 60 cities these women hailed from, the beautiful-women category was pared down based on winners per female as well as some anecdotal evidence that relates to the survey's objective.
"We know that in particular, a lot of beautiful women in Fort Worth attend the art openings at the Kimbell Museum, so we are talking about women who are most likely very cultured in addition to being attractive, and that is something all guys should consider a plus," says Matt Marion, health editor at Men's Health.
Fort Worth scored high because it is the hometown of former Miss USA winners Gretchen Polhemus Jensen and Courtney Gibbs (meaning that it averaged one beauty contest winner for every 267,347 women), placing it second only to Honolulu and its three Miss America winners. Rounding out the top five were Detroit and Chicago.
These results hardly surprise local beauty professionals. According to former model talent scout Lise Cook, a Fort Worth dazzler can often be discovered at the sorority houses and track meets at Texas Christian Univesity, shopping at the Hulen or North East malls or sipping a margarita at the 8.0's Friday-night happy hour.
Fort Worth is clearly not just where the West begins, but also where a certain ideal of Western beauty has its roots.
"In Fort Worth and in the smaller towns near it, there is still an innocence, purity and prettiness to the women who are not overdone by too much hard living and covered up by too much makeup," says Cook. "The beauty in Fort Worth is just more pure Texas beauty, where the women seem to have clearer eyes and prettier skin, mainly because of a cleaner lifestyle."
For some in the modeling business, the difference between a Fort Worth beauty and her Dallas counterpart is the sum of the region's dusty stereotypes.
"Fort Worth just has a more natural, girl-next-door beauty, while the Dallas woman is more made up, has more bleached hair, goes to the salon more and has had more plastic surgery," says Betsy Brewer, vice president of Femme Promotions, a Frisco-based promotional modeling agency.
And considering that Weatherford's Kasi Kelly, a statuesque 6-foot-tall brunette, nabbed the 2002 Miss Texas USA tiara, Fort Worth might just have the momentum needed to grab the top spot the next time that beautiful-women survey is taken.
