Fort Worth ranks No. 2 for beautiful women

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder -- and in Fort Worth, there's a lot of beauty to behold.

When it comes to per capita female pulchritude -- that's academic-speak for how many hotties you can expect to find at your local bar -- Fort Worth ranks No. 2 in the nation, says Men's Health magazine. Ranking fourth, Dallas is barely in Fort Worth's rear-view mirror.

Men's Health, which compiled the list as part of a "Best and Worst Cities for Men" survey in its November issue, arrived at these vital statistics through an unusual methodology: It compiled the names of Playboy Playmates of the Year and winners of the Miss America and Miss USA contests, over the past 23 years. From the 60 cities these women hailed from, the beautiful-women category was pared down based on winners per female as well as some anecdotal evidence that relates to the survey's objective.

"We know that in particular, a lot of beautiful women in Fort Worth attend the art openings at the Kimbell Museum, so we are talking about women who are most likely very cultured in addition to being attractive, and that is something all guys should consider a plus," says Matt Marion, health editor at Men's Health.

Fort Worth scored high because it is the hometown of former Miss USA winners Gretchen Polhemus Jensen and Courtney Gibbs (meaning that it averaged one beauty contest winner for every 267,347 women), placing it second only to Honolulu and its three Miss America winners. Rounding out the top five were Detroit and Chicago.

These results hardly surprise local beauty professionals. According to former model talent scout Lise Cook, a Fort Worth dazzler can often be discovered at the sorority houses and track meets at Texas Christian Univesity, shopping at the Hulen or North East malls or sipping a margarita at the 8.0's Friday-night happy hour.

Fort Worth is clearly not just where the West begins, but also where a certain ideal of Western beauty has its roots.

"In Fort Worth and in the smaller towns near it, there is still an innocence, purity and prettiness to the women who are not overdone by too much hard living and covered up by too much makeup," says Cook. "The beauty in Fort Worth is just more pure Texas beauty, where the women seem to have clearer eyes and prettier skin, mainly because of a cleaner lifestyle."

For some in the modeling business, the difference between a Fort Worth beauty and her Dallas counterpart is the sum of the region's dusty stereotypes.

"Fort Worth just has a more natural, girl-next-door beauty, while the Dallas woman is more made up, has more bleached hair, goes to the salon more and has had more plastic surgery," says Betsy Brewer, vice president of Femme Promotions, a Frisco-based promotional modeling agency.

And considering that Weatherford's Kasi Kelly, a statuesque 6-foot-tall brunette, nabbed the 2002 Miss Texas USA tiara, Fort Worth might just have the momentum needed to grab the top spot the next time that beautiful-women survey is taken.

Now I have no doubt that Ft. Worth has an excess of beautiful women, but (as your "Another Pointless Ranking" implies), the reasonings here are laughable! How many people really agree with the winners of Miss America, etc? Maybe I'm alone on this, but the women I find most attractive are seldom picked. Sometimes never even make it to the final round.

Also, even more than that, many of Dallas' most beautiful women are full-time workers. The few with whom I am in aquaintence almost unanimously find beauty pagents disgusting and demeaning. Perhaps that's their liberal/feminist views shining through, but ether way, that makes me think maybe other cities, too, are filled with anti-pageant women and don't even make number four?

I was in Akita, Japan this summer for nearly two months. That is the city ranked almost consistantly the most beautiful city in Japan for women, and sometimes in all of Asia. In one article I was reading, the way they did it, was set a total of two hundred male judges, selected upon different tastes, to stand out and watch the women at Akita's main train station (where the most people congregated) and a very popular mall called Jusco. This was done in a variety of major cities, and what the men would do (this is the same two hundred men for all of the cities, by the way) is give an "overall ranking" to each location in each city. The rankings were then averaged, and a 'winner' was picked. Now this, too, is subjective... but to me at least it's a better way to pick beautiful women. And my personal US pick... this is a bit odd, but, I remember their being a hugely high percentage in San Diego. From exotic to all-american, there were lots of beautiful women of all types.

Then again, why do I even care about the way such a superficial ranking is done? Hahaha.

I don't know... as subjective (and pointless) as these rankings are, DFW has some very beautiful women... Almost 95% of the time I tell people that I'm from Dallas, men and women talk about how beautiful the women were when they visited...

As an immigrant from New Mexico, I have to say that Texas has some very very very beautiful women. The South, in general, has a lot of beautiful women.

The Best & Worst Cities For Men

Something you didn't know about Ft. Worth, Texas: The women are amazing. We discovered the foxes of Ft. Worth when we researched where Miss America, Miss USA, and the Playmate of the Year have hailed from since 1980. Beginning with a list of more than 60 cities, we narrowed the field to those with the most winners and then figured in the total female population of each. The result: The five municipalities with the most award-winning beauties per capita. "Beautiful women probably initially flocked to these cities to work as models or entertainers, [eventually] causing more genetics for beautiful people to end up there," says Stephen Marquardt, M.D., a human-aesthetics researcher in Orange County, California. Want to see the sights? Grab this guide and go to . . .

1. Honolulu
On the beach, in the water, at the clubs -- beautiful women blanket the island of Oahu. You can hit the North Shore -- or, better, head to San Souci Beach Park. "That's where they're hanging out," says Kevin Miller, co-owner of Hawaiian Fire Surf School.

2. Ft. Worth
Over and over, we heard about one spot: 8.0 Restaurant & Bar. Go on a Thursday night, when there's live music. Or look for openings at the Kimbell Art Museum. "[Those] always bring out beautiful women," says the owner of a local modeling agency.

3. Detroit
First stop: a Red Wings or Pistons game; both have a fan base of babes. "The Pistons a little more so," says Marc Fellhauer, a producer at WRIF in Detroit. Next, go to the Bikram Yoga Studios. "The classes are 70 to 80 percent women," says one local.

4. Dallas
Skip the Cowboys cheerleader tryouts and instead eat at the sushi bar Tei Tei Robata in the Knox-Henderson area of Dallas. "It's cool, almost Zen-like, with amazingly attractive women," says Adam McGill, an editor at the city's D Magazine.

5. Chicago
Look for where State and Rush Streets intersect to form a triangle (nicknamed the "Viagra Triangle" because of the head-turners seen there). Best viewing area: the outdoor patio at the Tavern on Rush. Also, get a day pass to the East Bank Club gym ($20), where a member admits, "it's hard to concentrate on working out."

Aww, guys, "pointless ranking?" Hey, you're just jealous because YOU CAN'T GET THEM! Yeah, yeah, okay, but this does confirm my suspicions, after travelling over most of the country. No place like home!

I feel like a dirty old man saying that.
