What do you do for a living?

I put Architect, though i am not an architect and haven't finished my degree (of any kind yet). I am considered an architect assistant at a firm which does mainly interior design work for office spaces throughout the metroplex.

We have two architects and many Interior Designers. I may not have a degree yet, but do quite well anyway. It doesnt hurt the pocket book being married to someone who does have a masters degree, even though they work at a School District. I still consider finishing, though as each month goes by it feels more difficult.

Love my job and that is partyly why i started coming to this site. And find myself trying to learn more about what is going on around the metroplex more since being at this site.

Mikedsjr,

If you want to learn about Dallas and what is constructed in Dallas.....

You're in the right place...

I know about losing your momentum for school. It took me 5 years to get my undergrad degree...

Same with me and school. I started out like gang busters, then things went wrong for me. Had to mentally bring myself up to finishing.

As for a living, I always say I do nothing for a living:D , but I do have two jobs. I'm a small contractor in a field that allows me to see lots of building rooftops and basements. I'm not steady with contracts yet, but trying to get there.

I also have a part-time job as an amateur photographer for a company that deals in insurance/claims/accident reports. So basically for half my day I get to walk areas of the city and photograph certain aspects of it. That's why I have so many pics, and many many more that I need a good host for. My assigned area for the next couple of weeks is Preston Hollow. All I can say is, wow, the Cuban Mansion is more than impressive!! As are many of the other homes. The beauty of that area makes me wonder why a wealthy person in the metroplex would live anywhere in the burbs.

rantan,

That's a sweet job. Well, of course if you make descent money. :)

I love photography and keep my 35 SLR with me at all times. ALL TIMES. Its my second baby and i protect it like i protect my first baby, which he is 20 mo. old.

I've actually thought about shifting to a photography degree. Or at least taking some college classes in photography.

Where does Cuban live? Huge Mavs fan. I was always curious where all the owners live. At least the areas they live in.

I work for the Hotel Crescent Court and The Mansion on Turtle Creek, two hotels just north of downtown (although some debate the Crescents location!). Planning on going to school for interior design.

I don't know if it's ok to divulge or not, but I've seen it published before in the DMN and on real estate websites trying to buy surrounding properties. His house is on the southwest corner of Hollow Way Rd and Deloache Ave. You litterally cannot miss it. It's like a huge fortress with multiple sightings of the 3rd floor over the wall. You get a great view walking by it through the gates. Here are some pics from the web

http://www.greenscapepump.com/images/photos/cuban1.jpg
http://www.greenscapepump.com/images/photos/cuban2.jpg

The pics simply do not do justice to the sheer size and beauty of the property. The main house is listed as 24,000 sq ft. But there's a garage bigger than most suburban homes, and a guest house that's twice as big as that garage in the back. But today I saw 3 larger homes that are being built right now. My only question is, who are these people?!?!?! I know how millionaires live, but those houses are more than I could imagine one house being. Unless those you see in most of the metroplex, these are in gorgeous wooded, and hilly settings.

I'm still a senior at J J Pearce High School. I can't wait to get out of here.

The thing is, most of us live above our means, while that house is probably only a small portion of his annual income. I'm not a big money/big house/big car kinda person, but I can't really blame a wealthy person for building a great place to live. I have much more of a problem with the "American Dream" that has lead to many living above what they can really live on. Or the beat the 'Joneses' mentality that many have. The thing that is really impressive about Preston Hollow and Highland Park are how inconspicuous they are. You could drive Royal, NW Highway, and Walnut Hill all of your life and never know what's behind those trees. You'd never see that elsewhere, where the subdivision's entrances have Bufallo statues, elaborate fountains, and flood lights. I'm not judging the people that live in either place, but I think we should think about who is really humble and who is really more brash.

I compltely agree rantanamo!

And Sorry, Urban, if I had the money of Mark Cuban, you can bet I'd have a property like that AND a penthouse downtown. And a two nice condos in NYC and Tokyo. And then I'd still have millions left over to help build some more homeless centers!

I am an architect. I was interested in buildings when I was a kid, so I stuck with it. The firm that I work for is Halbach-Dietz Architects and we have two offices. One is in Fort Worth, where I work and reside, and the other is in Dallas in Uptown on Maple Avenue.

I thought I would bump this thread since there have been alot of new members since the last post and it would be interesting to see what everyone does. And if you haven't already, please post in the "Who Are We?" Thread (http://forum.dallasmetropolis.com/showthread.php?t=293).

I will add here that I am employed as an 'Intern Architect' with RTKL Associates (we in the profession cannot legally call ourselves 'Architect' until we have completed atleast 3 years of internship and completed 9 licensure exams).

I seem to be the only person with a job in Sales, and one of few that would seem to work in a glass office building, the kind that so many fantacize about on this forum.

Yet the FW & Duncan offices are actually not in glass office buildings...

Bullet: Edumacated in the art of hand dishwashing and three-tank auto-dishwashing. A stout follower of the 140-150 degree wash temp, the 160-180 degree rinse temp, and the 180-194 degree final rinse. Also, know how to not scald hands afterwards. Have enough backbone to tell chefs in a tactful manner to wash their own pans if they carelessly burn food debris onto them. Will not hit them in a fit of anger.

Bullet: Don't smoke pot at work. Know enough not to go to the washroom with my apron still on. Can read the sign saying to wash hands.

Nitpick: Poll title is "What industry do you work in?" That's different, in some cases, from "What do you do for a living?" In my case, I'm a computer programmer, so what I do is Information Technology. But I work for a tax software company, so I checked "Accounting/Finance". Shouldn't "Banking" be part of "Accounting/Finance"?

In fact, many such surveys I've seen don't include IT as an option, because IT is now part of every industry. Except for perhaps a video game company, I don't know if there's such a thing as an IT position that's purely IT. And even the video game company might count as the "Entertainment" industry.

Hmm. There's not an "Entertainment" category. Would any resident strippers (I mean, exotic dance professionals) select "Education"? Or maybe "Accounting/Finance" woiuld be more appropriate. :)

You'll need to show that you can properly put on a hair net and cut your finger nails. Also, you'll need a basic knowledge of physics. More to the point, an understanding of the basic laws of gravity and mass. That way, you can demonstrate that you understand that if you drop a plate, it can break. And, if you shove too many plates into the dishwashing machine, you won't be able to run it. Perhaps I'm taking this joke too far now...

These days, I'm almost a sophmore at Sam Houston State University. I work as a DJ at 90.5 KSHU. I'm about to get back into my photography as soon as I get some of the work here at my house done. Also, my brother and I are looking to go into business as a production company here in Huntsville. We have almost all the equipment, we'll soon have the software, and we can lowball any other ad production company in the area.

Basically my company sells industrial measurement instrumentation. For example, if you have a silo full of grain, our ultrasonic level devices can tell you how much grain is in the silo. That kind of thing. I'm a sales reporting analyst in the company. I can tell you who we sold to, how much, in what regions, etc. I'm a total whiz in Excel, Access, Power Point, Crystal Reports, Word, Adobe Acrobat, and a few other basic office programs. Sometimes I think that my vast knowledge of computer programs is the main reason they keep me around. I got mad skillz yo.

When I grow up (i.e. when I finish my MBA which I start in the spring) I'm going to be a financial analyst. But for now I report. And I'm very good at it. But if I can get my MBA I can basically do the same thing I'm doing now but double or triple my salary.
