For the fourth consecutive year, No. 1 on the list was Boulder, Colo., according to federal data analyzed by the Software & Information Industry Association. It was followed by San Jose, Calif.; Washington, D.C.; San Francisco; Seattle; and Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, N.C.

Dropping out of this year's top 25 were Sioux Falls, S.D.; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Stamford-Norwalk, Conn.; Atlanta; Wilmington, Del.; and Tallahassee, Fla.

New arrivals to the list are Atlantic-Cape May, N.J.; Bridgeport, Conn; Orange County, Calif.; Provo-Orem, Utah; Salt Lake City; and Harrisburg, Pa.

The only other Texas city to make the list was Austin, which ranked seventh.

"The software industry has created a tremendous number of jobs for highly skilled employees throughout the country," says Ken Wasch, president of the software association. "The wide geographic range of cities in this list highlights the importance of software and technology to the growth and stability of the U.S. economy."

Some changes in this list from 2000 to 2001 reflect the loss of jobs during the high-tech slump. For example, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data, the San Jose area lost 1,400 software-related jobs from 2000 to 2001, while Sioux Falls lost 1,100.

The analysis includes occupations such as computer programmer, software engineer, computer scientist, systems analyst, database administrator, network administrator and support specialist.

Generally, the analysis calculates software employment as a share of a metro area's population and then compares that share with the U.S. average.
