I was suprised to see the two biggest cities growing by the most amount of people from 2000 to 2030.

Personally, I believe the central cities (Dallas, Fort Worth, Arlington Irving) will experience higher growth than the NCTCOG predicts.

I can see Dallas and Fort Worth having a higher growth than expected- but not so sure about Arlington and Irving. You have to remember that these 2 cities are quickly running out of land for residential use- especially Arlington... From North to South it's filling up quick! I guess Irving probably has more land than Arlington though...

Mmm.....I don't know. Dallas from 1990-2000 roughly went up 200,000 so I honestly expect Dallas to be up around 1.35 or 1.4 million by 2010, maybe Im crazy

bloodandpopcorn

Yeah. And the fact that the core is getting much more housing available and become a much more cohesive urban environment will also probably spawn alot more grown there and, thusly, within city limits than is projected. The more people/buildings you get in the area, the more lively it becomes, and the more other people want to move there.

I agree. I think they are underestimating the City of Dallas. Their formula may be factoring in data from decades previous to 1990, before the urban renewal trend hit DFW.

Well I think thier right on target. Not long ago thier was a artical in Star Telegram that showed Fort Worth being the second fasted growing city in USA! From 2000-2003.I belive the faster city was Charlott.but if it were not for the recent annexationof the other city. Fort Worth would of been the fastes growing city in America.

Second Dallas is land locked by suburbs.the city could annex to the southeast were no town is thier but that not likely.Fort Worth on the other hand can and is growing to the north west and south. The ETJ OF Fort Worth is huge .Fort Worth is almost as large as Dallas in land mass already. And more or TARRANT.JOHNSON,PARKER,WISE AND MORE OF DENTON .Could fall into Fot Worth city limits.

Arlington like Dallas is all but maxed out land wise. Not too say other cities will not grow.We all will.but its a matter of time.when Fort Worth max out some day .I belive Fort Worth is the sleeping giant.A giant in his teen years.Fort Worth I belive will be the largest citiy in the metroplex. Not in my lifetime but one day Fort Worth Will.

Also in the artical I found suprising that San Antonio, may overtake Dallas in population. And what floored me was it went on to say that San Antoinio may be ALREADY be larger in population than Dallas!WOW!

Nick, what you are not taking into consideration are the most important factors. Buying up a bunch of land to get a bigger population only works for so long. Ft. Worth won't and can't keep annexing forever.

Dallas is landlocked, yes, but that works to our benefit. Now we can work towards filling in what we hve and making it a great urban environment. South Dallas is beginning to come back on the map. Uptown and Downtown are being filled with residents in highrises, creating a very densely populated area. That is how Dallas will grow in the future, and just come over and look at the construction and renovation projects that are occuring and you'll see we're just getting more and more. As the buildings fill and Central Dallas becomes more vibrant and dense, more people will be attracted there.

Dallas' Public Transit system, currently the only one of note in the state, really, though Houston's may get there before long, will grow and help to make the city even more dense. Dallas has not grown that much in the past because it has had little different to offer potential residents than the suburbs did, except smaller, more expensive lots. But now with our urban area being reborn and apartment and condo buildings coming up (or taking the place of old, unused buildings) people will have a reason to move to Dallas. Even if it costs more.

Ft. Worth will never have a bigger population than Dallas. Search the board. People like Ft. Worth because it isn't a highly populated dense city. It's a very nice, huge town. If people want big, urban city, they will not choose FW. Which is fine. It allows two great, entirely different cities to exist near one another.

BTW, welcome to the board, Nick :)

Not at all I was specking of Charlott annexation .Witch helped it Pass Fort Worth in populatin growth.

True Fort worth can not annex forever.I even said so WHEN Fort Worth does max out!The last three years of Fort Worth growth was not all due to annexation.

Again not in my life time but Fort Worth will max out and dence up Like Dallas is now,Just that Fort Worth will have more land to dence up into than Dallas has now. say in latter part of this century.

People go when and were that want to,Perfect example Anexation is a ongoing issue in Fort Worth and will be for decades to come. The unincorperated parts of the community surounding Fort Worth .keep saying the same thing I want to live in a rural area but Fort Worth keeps growing. Its not just land but housing is filling up were once thier was cows.Thats the god honest truth!

The City can do little if anything from people moving into Fort Worth,If we wanted to.What we want is a orderly formation of our grouth that is going to happen. Not to have a blight in the inner city.Fort Worth has a golden opertunity to look at other cities and learn as we grow. And a heck of lot easy to repair whats wrong now that 50 years from now,

Belive me im a native Texas and big is everything !But im also open minded about what could and might happen.I like Dallas When I date I go all over the Dallas Fort Worth AREA.Your Mayor Miller came into our city and said some wonderful things about Fort Worth. And I can say wondeful things abut Dallas. In Shor tDallas its a great City!

It would hurt Fort Worth if Dallas ever became a seespool of crime and dipair I hope and need Dallas to prosper .Recently Thier was a artical about Arlington.in the S-TI.Its not all good. We in Fort Worth have interest that they not go into blight also.Crime and ecomimic and population migration knows no boundries.Look at Mexico. We here in north America would be far better off if we Canada America and Mexico were all prosperous. So is very true for Our three cities.I been here all my life and try with my predudice to be open minded .I just see Fort Worth do something I didnt expect.Come into its own.And see him as a sleeping giant waking up!Heck im 34 years old I remember Japan was just a cheap radio making country. While we were mocking them,They just SUPRISED US AGAIN.Not with bombs ,they bought the rug out under us in the eighties.iTS THE TORTUS AND THE HAIR STORY.

Thank you for your Welcome. I don't agress but respect your opinion.

I guess we can just agree to disagree. Only time will tell, I suppose.

Blood and Popcorn was the title of an Asian film review website that I used to run. Sadly financial and technical difficulties arose, and I had to stop. Also my preferred domain name was lost. Maybe one day in the near future I can get it running again. the year or so that it was on the web was very enjoyable for me.

Just a thought:

NYC has had the same city limits for the last 100 years. (smaller than the loop 12 loop in Dallas) They have packed 8 million into that city. Do you guys think Dallas ever become even half as densely populated?

MustangMonkey

I thought NYC and Dallas have roughly the same city limit size.

Manhattan alone might approximate loop 12.

psukhu
13 October 2003, 02:03 PM
Manhattan is about 2 miles x 13 miles.

The loop 12 circle has a diameter of about 14 miles. Manhattan would just be a sliver of that.

NYC does look like about the same size as Dallas, but you have to deduct New Jersey and the water:

Might have to be that densely populated if we expect to see the Population rate continue to grow. 10 Billion by century end.

To me, it matters not which city or municipality grows more or grows faster, etc. We have regional transportation and air quality issues with the current population. If either city expects to grow and maintain a decent quality of life, then we focus on other issues. The region should be planning, building, preparing, etc for the regional growth NOW (i.e. water, trash, air, transportation, etc)!

Wow, I didn't realize Atlanta was so small! You mentioned Ft Worth outpacing them, so I checked out city populations - Atlanta is at just over 400,000 it seems!! I always thought it was at least near the population level of Dallas. That's very odd! The rest I knew were cities of ft. worth category.

Congrats to our neighbors! mikedsjr, what do you think of ft. worth's growing population? Would you rather Ft. Worth max out at about 100,000 more residents, or would you like to see it pass the 1,000,000 marker?

I saw that article in the Star Telegram too. I wasn't surprised with the FW growth as much as I was surprised with how small some of the other cities were. I am sure it has been posted here somewhere, but I am curious what the square mileage is of the top 25 most populous cities. I know Houston, Dallas, FW, and LA are pretty big in terms of land mass. I'd like to see more infill and density in FW as well as Dallas.

John T Roberts
19 October 2003, 12:33 AM
I'll throw in something here. I too, am a Fort Worth resident. I would like to see Fort Worth continue to grow, but it should be quality growth with no sprawl. Of course, I know that there will be some sprawl, but I would like to see our City Council encourage inner city development. There is plenty of vacant land to place infill projects. I agree with Garrett in that I hope there is an increase in density within the inner city, as well.

gc
19 October 2003, 12:38 AM
Exactly JTR, I could care less if FW or Dallas grow because they annex another 25 sq miles that are 20 miles from the inner city!

This just one of many many ongoing projects.Fort Worth South Inc,Mecardo Project On the North Side,Rosedale Project on the east side.(Where talk of our first light rail will go if we get one).Building Hwy 121 with the explosive grouth on the west side .Whhhhheeeew Give me a minute while I catch my breath =)

dallastophoenix

Phoenix - city proper - covers a whopping 484.5 square miles, making it larger than LA... projections in this city of major sprawl state that the area's land can sustain up to 13 million (it's now at 1.45 - city; 3.5 metro)... and the crazy thing is that there aren't many highways to get people out to their far suburban homes... (imagine exiting 635 and taking Midway Rd. North for 45 mins to an hour to get home... this is what people do out here!!).

just shows you that bigger doesn't always mean better.

I do have some concerns about the number of people on earth. But really, I don't care how many people live in any given region, as long as the enviroment, which includes the habitat for animals, is taken in consideration and protected for further generations. Fort Worth still has alot of undeveloped land. And if they can revitalize now while the active sprawl is not all the way around the city, then Fort Worth certainly has a chance exceed a million easily. There is plenty of land that Fort Worth can develop close to Downtown.

And another thing. I don't mind Ft Worth growing to over a million as long as they don't stray from their image. I love the image of Fort Worth. To me, Fort Worth has a strong solid image while Dallas doesn't real have one, IMO.

Its like this.

I am certainly not trying to put down Dallas. There are certainly alot of value that Dallas has that Fort Worth doesn't have as much of. Maybe the identity of Dallas is: Business oriented. Because business equals money which equals power which equal domination over puny scumbag cities. Let'em rot and decay and beg. :)

Fort Worth just seems to have an identity that they can build upon. Whether some snooty urbanite thinks the Southwestern history is for rednecks or not. kidding evdallas ;)

What my (not-from-Texas) friends think of:

FT. Worth - Cowtown, friendly, great museums (so they've read or heard but not seen), small town feel.

Dallas - Very pro-business, money/rich people, prettiest people they've ever seen, cool nightlife, crazy wet/dry laws (coming from those that have visited), racial issues, anywhere from the friendliest people they've met to the most snobs they've ever encountered...

Will first of all I proud of my Fort Worth hertiage. As I am proud of my Mexican American heritage. So to equall Fort Worth and Redneck.and me being Hispanic well I take issue with that!

Few months ago menth health magaziin gave list of 20 fattest cities.and Houston Dallas And Fort worth came into the top 20.
nothing to be proud of.However 3 mounths ago Fort Worth got a great distinction as being the second most generous city in America . Behind Ney York,Dallas was not even in the top 30.And on TXCN news over the weekend .Fort Worth came in second has having the most prettiest Woman in America. And one of our city councilman Jim Lane with the aproval of our Mayor Mike Moncriff.Aproved to send thanks and dinner to the Doctors and Staff that helped the conjoined twins seperation sugery. We here are always thinking of others .

Like our police Chief Ralph Mendoza (Hispanic) said.We want the citizens of Fort Worth to report any and all crime,"even if it makes us look bad"Cause in the long run it will hurt us all. That is what I like about our city ,Some talk the talk others walk the walk!

Dallas has a lot of good but get turned off by name calling.I rather stay above all that. And not lower ourself to that level.

Wishing Dallas the very best now and always Nick

P.S.Your Mayor Miller said Joe T Garcia in Fort Worth is her favorit Resturant.Frescos in Dallas is one of mine!

Well, i'll try to stay out of these (pointless) ft. worth vs. dallas discussions, but let me say one thing:

All of those polls you mentioned are, basically, pointless. They're 100% subjective topics done in odd ways that really don't provide for the best testing conditions. The weight poll especially -- if they did some study from check-ups on actual placements of people, that would be one thing, but it's more of an 'ease of exercise' survey than anything else: and a very faulty 'ease of exercise' survey!

So feel free to love Ft Worth or Dallas or both or neither, but, if you're going to use surveys, please, don't use ones as subjective as those.

Sorry, one more thing (I guess I'm at two now. Sorry... but this will be short): I like that you can't sum up Dallas in three words. We have far too much to do that with. Yes, New York has a nickname, but no one can really identify what NYC is in three words. It'd be ridiculas to try. Honestly, I don't think you can sum up or identify or whatever you want to do for Ft Worth in three words either, but I do think it could be done in fewer words. Saying Dallas gives people an image (usually very made up women, nice highways, big business, and an easily recognizable skylin) and saying Ft. Worth gives people an image (cows, cowboys, and the West). I would say that Dallas' image is more widespread (in Japan, practically everyone i talked to had at least heard of Dallas, many had visited or seen pictures. Very few knew Ft. Worth, San Antonio, or even Austin. Houston was about on par with Dallas), but again, that is subjective so I won't try and use that to prove anthing...

So sorry... this post is much longer than I intended.

I lived in Europe and when I came back to the US, I had to change planes in Wisconsin. I remember thinking everyone was fat. Its so nice to live somewhere where you can walk anywhere and people don't think you are weird for doing it. Wasnt it once (in the late 1800's) something of a status symbol to be obese? A statement saying "I have more than enough food to eat and I dont have to work hard"?

I think it's abhorable that such an array of medication is available to treat obese adults. Maybe gym memberships should be covered by insurance/medicare.

Midland's a great place to raise a family. You can see its skyline from nearly 30 miles away, 'cause the tallest building is 24 stories! Midland's also got a minor-league baseball team, the Rockhounds, which is the Oakland A's AA Texas League farm club.

Odessa isn't as fancy, but it's got some great honky-tonks. If you're lookin' to party West Texas-style, it's worth the effort to drive to Odessa. Another plus: Folks from all 'round who appreciate high-school football played at its highest level know Odessa as the home of the Permian Panthers, immortalized forever in the best-selling book "Friday Night Lights." Odessa is truly the home of that mystical, indefinable 'Mojo'!

Both cities have outstanding community colleges, but Odessa is home to the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, which awards full bachelor's degrees & even a few graduate degrees in some disciplines.

Culturally, Midland has the Museum of the Southwest, the Permian Basin Petroleum Museum, and a nationally recognized community theater. Yet, just 20 miles away, Odessa has a museum dedicated to ALL the different presidents of these United States & an exact replica of the Globe Theater in England, where alot of that Shakespeare stuff got put on.

Odessa's also got a monument to the jackalope, a creatur---
