I think this give you the size of the idividual media markets in the US.

These sorts of figures seem, to me, more accurate gauges of the real size of metro areas than the Census Dept. estimates you usually hear about.

And metros are better reflections of different urban areas' true heft than city population tallies.

I guess a larger TV market means a higher cost to run a commercial because a larger audience will see it.

Notice that Baltimore/DC is one metro on the Census, but they are two separate TV markets.

I'm not sure this really has anything to do with media markets- Dallas is actually the 5th largest media market now and Houston is certainly greater than 11th. Another point- San Antonio which ranks in the top 10 in terms of population didn't even make the top 30....

I too noticed that SA was not to be found.

Where do you find the media market rankings? I went trolling for that bit of information on google a while back and found nothing.

SA was ranked 37th.

Maybe this is also a measure of affluence. They are counting TV households, not heads.

Well, I was sort of wrong on this one! I couldn't find any information that ranked entire media markets- but it appears that TV and radio are listed separately... Here are a few Texas rankings from www.tvradioworld.com

Dallas: TV #7 / Radio #5
Houston: TV #11 / Radio #9
San Antonio: TV #37 / Radio #31
Austin: TV #54 / Radio #43

KellyUSA,

Your point about San Antonio being the 10th largest...

It is merely the 10th largest individual municipal government in the United States. Not the 10th largest metropolitan area.

In reality, it is a large municipality in a small metro. San Francisco, Boston and Atlanta are smaller municipalities embedded in a huge metro area.

In most english speaking countries, they do not use the term "city" to describe a municipal government. Our country is more ambiguous and confusing in use of language.
